Nice to find someone who does this also. I did this for several years up until I bought a mac a few weeks ago. The only difference for me was that the navigation buttons were directly to the left of the address bar instead of to the right of the search bar.
Nor does it mean that an act of Parliament/electedbodyofchoice which takes away freedom is legitimate simply because the majority agrees that it is in the country's "best interest." Examples: Jim Crow, (the lack of) Women's suffrage, Plessy v. Ferguson, etc.
Perhaps I should have been more specific. I just meant that it's too little too late for me. I'm sick of ATI's linux shenanigans and was sick of battling the awful fglrx driver for the basic aforementioned features. Although highly unlikely, if ATI ends up being the best choice for accelerated linux graphics in another five years I may consider using one of their cards.
the ability to get rid of the bottom bar and use window scaling to find running apps is great. You could have just moved the task list to the top panel. That's what I did for about two years.
Good job ATI; you're finally allowing people to use your products with whatever operating system they want. ATI should NOT be applauded for this. Full linux support should be expected from all hardware vendors, no exceptions. This is too little, much too late.
After spending two years battling fglrx for basic features like compositing and suspend-to-ram I've already moved on and committed to never purchasing another ATI product again. Have they even fixed suspend-to-ram in the pathetic fglrx blob yet? I wouldn't say ATI's products "support" linux until I can suspend-to-ram 100 times in a row without one flaw.
While we're on the subject of international standards, how about creating one about the proper use of "it's" and "its"? Oh wait...
But seriously, just because one system is better than the other doesn't mean it would be feasible to switch. A great example is qwerty vs. dvorak. The latter is quite clearly better, but it would be basically impossible to have a mass switch to dvorak. Plus, who is going to advocate for some different keyboard layout that most people haven't even heard of? That said, I'm all for switching to the metric system. While we're at it, why don't we either switch to a base-10 time system or the 28-hour-day, 6-days-per-week sleeping schedule?
Perhaps we should all switch from qwerty to dvorak? I did. But I still have my weather widget give the temperature in Fahrenheit. My mixture of old and new systems is mind-boggling.
As a Nevadan born and raised in Las Vegas, I believe there is generally a positive consensus about Yucca Mountain. I don't think anyone actually believes that nuclear waste buried far far away in the middle of nowhere is going to turn us into three-eyed mutants. If it will help lower gas prices (via electric cars), please do.
And that's exactly why open source is so powerful.

I think the idea is that red cars get in more accidents or something. It's either the personality of people who buy red cars or that red distracts other drivers and subconsciously causes them to hit red cars. I tend to think it's the latter because I've owned a red car (that I bought used for a great deal - color wasn't important to me) for close to four years now and I don't regularly have to swerve to avoid getting hit by people who are distracted by my fire engine red car.
I'm glad you posted this. The rest of the world and the scientific community need to see that there are Christians (like myself) who know that the Bible is full of poetry, metaphors, and phenomenological language, and every word is not meant to be taken literally. Christians do exist who are intelligent, accept evolution, believe in the inerrancy of Scripture, and believe that God so loved humanity that he died to save us (the core belief of Christianity).
In case you are wondering, I hold to the literary framework interpretation of Genesis 1. This view avoids many of the scientific problems associated with the literal 6-day view (with which there are many, e.g. the sun wasn't created until the fourth day...?).
By the way, I am a follower of Christ attending Wheaton College in Illinois. Call me a nut if you like, but know that I do not approve of the majority of the actions/views of the so-called "religious right" and am saddened by the public's (well-deserved) impression of Christianity and Christians in this country. Christians should not be trying to get to power to force our "Biblical" views on the rest of the world. We should be trying to live the life of service and self-sacrifice to which Christ has called us. Admittedly, I am not perfect, but that is why I need Christ in the first place.
I'd love to talk with anyone with questions about my beliefs or anything. Believe me, I'm not going to try to convert you.
They're a private organization that receives federal funding... That's the problem here. The problem isn't that they're discriminating (since they're a private organization). The real problem is that the government is giving a private organization money. This always causes trouble because then people have to battle over what the "private" organization can and cannot do. The best thing would be if the government would simply not use taxpayer money to fund things outside of its jurisdiction/role.
Just because something is illegal does not mean that it is morally wrong or that the law itself is just. I can think of a few examples of this in American history.
This is true, but if the government stuck to its role as defined by the Constitution the amount of corruption would be reduced. For examples look at many of the South American countries (namely Peru) where governments are large and redistribute much of people's income. The larger the redistributive pie, the bigger the incentive to pay a bribe to receive part of that pie.
You are correct, although I tend to buy the cheap versions of things so I was thinking of the Home/Student version which I believe is cheaper. Same goes for Vista/proprietary software in general (for me).
Although if MS ever put out an OS that is better than Linux on security, and better than OSX on ease of use and prettiness -- Slashdotters would still decry it. That is a REALLY big "if." Microsoft has had 15 years of consumer-grade operating system releases, with not one having any of the aforementioned characteristics.
Probably for the same sort of reason you jumped to the conclusion that "most Christians" do this. People have agendas and will do what it takes to get their message heard.
On ubuntu hardy I've had nothing but problems with flashplugin-nonfree (unstable with pulseaudio, no sound with alsa, etc). I removed that package and installed mozilla-plugin-gnash and have zero problems now.

Well, you'd have to delete the bottom panel of course.

That doesn't mean their binary fglrx blob isn't a piece of garbage, however. Double negative.

Can you tell that I'm bitter?

Unless you're a hypercalvinist. But then you wouldn't be a Catholic. :)

You may "own" your house but it's illegal to burn it down. This doesn't mean you don't own it.

I like microsoft just as much as the next linux/OS X user, but in order to avoid the flamebait mods you should reduce the prices by about 50%.
Well, if it's being used instead of XP, the overall level of the computer's suck would be scaled down along with the scaled-down version of ubuntu.
Probably for the same sort of reason you jumped to the conclusion that "most Christians" do this. People have agendas and will do what it takes to get their message heard.
