  1. Why would a bad guy worry about breaking more laws on UK Government Wants Private Encryption Keys · · Score: 2, Insightful

I don't post often, but this spurred me to action.. It reminds me of gun laws in the U.S. Honest Citizens are expected to wait 5 days and complete a form acknowledging among other things that they are not a criminal. The funny thing is.. I don't think that criminals admit they are criminals..so they get their guns illegally or check "no" i am not a criminal on the form. If honest citizens are expected to turn over their private keys.. I might expect that the criminals wouldn't turn theirs over - they have already broken at least one law (to become a criminal).. I'm sure they wouldn't have a moral problem with breaking another. or They could simply turn over the a throw away private key to satisfy the requirement and use an illeagal set for their business. Just my opinion

Just a program is open source doesn't mean a programmer can put a backdoor in...is every line of code reviewed or does someone just add functionality. Has anyone look at everyline of code in KDE or the linux kernal itself...claiming something is open source and it has been reviewed doesn't mean it's secure..

  7. wireless hacking on Hacking Wireless 802.11b Nets · · Score: 3

I remember sitting in my friends apartment in Seattle and being able to connect to 3 different wireless networks by simply setting the default network name to any.. The same trick worked at the airport for network access I was supposed to be paying for..My wirelss client software was complaining about the lack of encryption but it still connected and gave me an ip address..I used napster to benchmark my speed and it was good...Perhaps we should only distribute this information to a smaller group of folks..so those in the "know" can take advantage of a rouge wireless network to get free internet access, and use napster while sitting in a terminal waiting for a flight..

What a bastard...How many years have we--are we going to pay for overpriced cd's. If I remember my basic economic theory about competition, then the music industry should lower the price of CD's. I also have to point out that if napster is shut down i'll simply fire off gnutella, or scour.net or any of the other programs making the rounds..And if they start adding some kind of protection to the new mp3's (i'll make sure I make backups of my current software) what do we do will all the existing mp3's, burn them.. We'll have an old fashioned mp3 bon fire like the book burnings of the past...

  10. Unbelievable on Verant Backs Down On Drive-Scanning · · Score: 2

Unbelievable It is absolutely unbelievable as I read most of these post that they are talking about keeping cheaters out of the game. I think the heart of the matter is that a company is wanting to scan your hard drive as a condition for installing there software. I think this is the central issue. If one company can start a trend, who will be next to try this tactic. I'll assume that we were lucky this time because the program asked if it could do the scan. Remember when Microsoft was accused of scanning a persons hard drive as part of the registration process and sending back information about their files. Consider that as part of using an mp3 player that it had to scan the pc for unlicensed songs and report the person to the RIAA?
