>It is worth pointing out that Lincoln was elected >president before he was killed. The abolition of >slavery in the US is an example of democracy >working.
Its also worth noting that Lincoln was not an abolitionist. The Emancipation Proclamation was nothing more than a PR stunt. Get his side more emotionally involved, and potentially get blacks hopeful, especially the slaves down south. If the slaves saw that they would soon be free, they would be less likely to work hard- more willing to endure the lashes of their masters, knowing it would soon end. The deeper thinkers among them could actively interfere with plantation operations, knowing that with output reduced the Confederacy would be less likely to prevail.
The Emancipation Proclamation had nothing to do with freedom, it was a tool to help win the war.
>like the capture of Manuel Noriega in Panama. that >one was just as economically
That wasn't economic at all. While on the payroll of the US Army and the CIA, he sold US military secrets to our enemies. That alone justified going in and getting him. As for the canal, the US had full control of the canal itself until the mid 90's.
> (Then again, just as I was about to click > "Submit", I saw most of the government buildings > in Baghdad get the absolute shit blown out of 'em. > Consider me shocked and awed either way.:)
Master Sun saying that yes, winning without fighting is best. But he also makes it clear that sometimes you must fight, and that when you do, it is best to shatter the enemies will to fight. There is some commentary expanding on this in some translations, where a general takes on a housebreaker. THe general is facing a battle his troops cannot win. The housebreaker goes and scares the shit out of the opposing general by stealing stuff from his personal chambers. This is similar in concept to our "decapitation attack". Disrupt the heierarchy to encourage a quick surrender.
You don't understand Marines. The General was focusing his Marines on the mission, and on the honor and decency that is expected of the United States Marine Corps.
Also, note that the Marine officers speech was much shorter. Marines are all about getting the mission done, long, flowery speeches while inspiring to civilians are less important to military forces.
So, for a civilian audience, I'd say the LtCols speech was better. For troops about to fight a war, the Major General was much better.
Hows this. I went to register at my local community college. I had done some of the paperwork already, but couldnt remember my student ID#(which isn't the SSN, but they have your SSN in the records too). They asked which address... Turns out my father who went to a different community college(same state) still has his information on file from the early 70's.
I could understand the military still having records on my father, but a community college?!?!?! thats just silly...

Gas reimbursement. Tell them with rising fuel prices you need either a significant raise or reimbursement for the fuel you use or you can't keep doing it. Milk them for all you can on truck maintenance(after all, you are putting extra load on *your* truck for *their* benefit).
Also explain how easy it would be for the stuff to be stolen out of the back of your truck, and that you cannot be held responsible. At the very least, they will probably get you a cap for your truck, and probably let you drop it off at work on friday.

I have several times wanted to scream at my mother. My dad, I don't know if he simply restricts himself to using IE or if he's actually better, but he doesn't have problems.
Odd thing is, my mom could handle our old DOS machine well. She just cd\whatever to the directory, typed something in, adn it went. Windows mystifies her however.
My brother I don't mind helping. Generally if he needs my help, or I need his, the problem is genuinely serious and/or interesting. Plus we both understand computers pretty well, so there aren't those "NO!!!! MY COMPUTER NOT NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD!" moments...
Heh. When I installed my new master hard drive recently, I ended up having to peel off dust. It was caked between the heat sink and the fan, slowing down the fan and completely blocking airflow across the heatsink. My average CPU temp dropped from 60 to 40 degrees after I peeled it off.
Things that last tend to have relatively simple designs. Don't go for a work of art- First priority of course is having enough space for you, the family, and your stuff. A thought to modularity might be useful. I don't mean buy a modular home, but think about the possibility of expansions. You don't want to have to take down half the house to add a small room in the back. Keeping in mind the possibility of future expansion when you initially build it will help in being able to expand without damaging integrity.
Redundant supporting beams and the like are certainly good to consider. It might be fine without it now, but I've seen old houses where the second floor is bowing down and it looks like only a few years until it caves in. If those houses had just one more supporting beam in the critical spot, out of the way of traffic/stuff stored in the room, they would have held up much better.
Most importantly, take care of it. Don't put off needed repairs. Smoke alarms not only can keep you alive, but can alert you to a fire soon enough to salvage the house as well. Simple design helps here too- If you do need repairs, a simple design will make it much easier to effect those repairs.
Don't skimp on costs. That lumber you save 25% on, may be lower quality than the solid oak stuff you get elsewhere. Obviously you should try to save money, but do not trade quality/durability for cash. You would probably be better off in the long run with a slightly smaller house made of top quality materials than a huge one made of the cheap stuff. You can always expand it later when you have more money.(simplicity strikes again- the simpler the design, the easier it is to modfiy without disrupting a fragile balance).
For free webhosts, noone ever beat xoom.com. Unlimited free space, FTP access, a bunch of CGI scripts for your use, the only ad requirement when I signed up was that you had to link to their main page.

No. Your job is to ensure that your team meets the goals set forth for it, whether or not it makes your manager look good. Key to that is high morale among your team members. If your main goal is making your manager look good- you will have crappy products, pissed off employees, and eventually you will be fired.
I've worked for people with that attitude. They are lower than dogshit.
I'd say in most cases at least, if the females are universally(or nearly so) worse than the men, its because the men expect them to be crap, don't set high expectations of them, and do things for them rather than let them learn how themselves.
Push people they will respond, and do well. When I was in the Marine Corps, almost all of the problems I saw with female Marines could be attributed to the male heierarchy seeing a female rather than a Marine.
In other words, if you want a woman to excel, set and enforce the same standards you set for the men. Females should be treated differently only when it comes to medical issues related to their differing biology. In social settings if you want to treat them differently, fine, whatever. But when it comes to work, men and women should be treated as equals.
Morality doesn't hold a candle to food on my plate.

I don't live in SCO's area, but I'd help out with this idea, shipping out products to be destroyed.
Does SCO/Caldera have retail available products? If so, why don't we all get together, buy every copy, have them shipped to Santa Cruz, bribe the local fire marshal, and have an SCO bonfire? Burn all the SCO produced products we can get our hands on. As close to their offices as the bribe can get us.
They see their sales spike, and are elated. And then, they are " Do you smell something burning?"
What MOS? Generally, its for command staff, Intelligence personnel, and operations personnel. If you don't need it, you don't get it. Also, it requires a minimum Secret security clearance to use.
They already have it. Existence of SIPRNET(Secret Internet Protocol Router Network) is unclassified. This isn't really news, so they are building another one? Big deal.
Consider also, the drop in costs for the labels. All they will need to pay for is studio time and the like... All those CD's that people now are not buying, you don't have the expense of distribution and packaging you do now. You aren't even paying for pressing the CD! This would cut their expenses immensely, which could make the relatively small revenue of this plan work. Granted, they will still be producing traditional CD's for those who dont' buy into this service, but they wouldn't be producing as many.
I think its worth a try, so long as the beneficiaries of our cycles are disclosed.
I'm not sure I would do it. But its a reasonable idea, so long as you are at least notified of who is using your clock cycles and why.
Ideally, there would be options as to what research projects you are willing to support. I would blow a gasket if my cycles were used to support research into abortion(personal feelings, if you support it, thats your business), but research into cancer drugs I wouldn't have any problem with...
The minimum of course is knowing who you are supporting with those cycles. I wouldn't even consider it if I didn't have a list of what companies and organizations my cycles are being donated to.
His intent was not to kill anyone. Without intent to kill, there should be no murder charge. Period. He made a decision, a bad one and it resulted in two deaths and one severe disfigurement. Yes, he should be punished, but his intent was not to kill. I feel it was just. Think about it- For 7 years, all he will be able to think about is this. With Jaqui having survived, he will always have that vision of a beatiful girl hiding behind the horror of what she looks like now.
By all accounts, this asshole feels remorse. I expect him to get out of jail and start a crusade against drunk driving.
I've seen a picture of the ass that did it on one of the presentations of this that is going around. Apparently he is feeling the guilt. That certainly doesn't excuse what happened, but is a first step in finding redemption and forgiveness.

If you have a moral reason, fine. Stand up and say so. Just don't hide it under a cloud of technological FUD.
My laptop with some crappy 8MB shared graphics card runs Linux, X, KDE, and however many apps I throw at it very well, very responsive. Its not stripped down at all- I didn't install all the applications Mandrake wanted me to, but KDE and X is a complete install apart from the games. No hand tuning performed(saves me loads of time compared to getting my banshee working on RH5.2 back in the day)
Oh, BTW, its a 750Mhz PIII with 256MB ram. Old dell latitude. If this patch really gives as much of a boost as they are saying it does, my laptop will be more responsive than this machine(WinXP, 1.6Ghz P4, 1GB ram, TNT2 AGP card)

If you aren't a complete idiot, X can run very well. The lack of freezes and seizures can itself save what response time you lose.
