  2. Dupes on Slashdot on Virus Writers - The Enemy Within · · Score: 1

This is the third time this article has been posted as noted by previous posters. We're techies, I'm sure there's a solution to eliminating dupes. One suggestion: Keep a database or the title, author and URL (and maybe other unique info). Whenever a new article is to be posted, check to see if it has already been posted.

  4. Just some thoughts on this... on id Software Announces Development Of Doom III · · Score: 1

Doom III? Come on, give us a break. Isn't the FPS thing done to death by now? Innovate. Just goes to show that no matter how talented the id Software developers are, their talent doesn't make up for originality. These guys are simply running out of steam. Raise your hand if you're sick of running around blasting everything in sight? The FPS game reached a peak with games such as UT and Q3A. We're going into the zone of diminishing returns, if we're not already there. I was really looking forward to something other than another FPS from id, even if it's Doom III. The firing of Paul Steed under these circumstances is just unprofessional and bad practice and certainly reflects poorly on the company as a whole, not only Kevin and Adrian. And you'd think that John Carmack would stand up for Paul Steed, as Steed probably did in forcing id to pursue Doom III. Hook left, then Cash, now Steed too? Looks like id will end up just being another game company if survives the weight of its egos. Let's see more stuff on Epic games and Tim Sweeney... they look like they're up and coming. --e!

  5. Re:OpenBSD? on Playing Games Behind IP Masquerade? · · Score: 1

Yes, I've run UT on a Win98 box behind my OpenBSD NAT box and it works just fine. In my experience setting up *BSD NAT is much easier and less troublesome than Linux's Masq, plus with OpenBSD you get a secure by default OS as your firewall which is extra gravy. --e!

  6. OpenX, SDL and OpenAL on OpenAL Audio Library Released · · Score: 1

This is good work by Loki. But why don't they or someone initiate an effort to make a DirectX equivalent API on Linux (and possibly other Unix based systems) that's self-contained, portable, fast and open source. Right now it's kind of segmented, with OpenGL -- for graphics, SDL and now OpenAL -- for sound. Are there efforts already underway to do something like this? I think it would be a good project to pursue in an effort to bring more gaming to Linux. --e!

This game PARSEC looks like Terminus (http://www.vvisions.com/terminus) a game I saw being demo-ed at the recent Linux World Expo (and had a chance to talk at length with one of the lead programmers). We'll have to see which is the better space game but they both look pretty neat. --e!

I loved the first part of the John Carmack interview and look forward to the second part. The guy is great an inspiration to me, along with James Cameron (I'm also into movies). However, with the coming and huge success of Unreal Tournament, I'd love to see more interviews of the programmers at Epic Games, specifically, Tim Sweeney, who IMO, is very comparable to and as capable as John Carmack but doesn't get as much recognition as he should, or as his fellow rival does. --e!

  9. I still find the Usenet useful. on Is Usenet Dying? · · Score: 1

In my experience, I've found that when I've exhausted all other informational resources on the net (WWW, BBSes, mail-lists, IRC, archives etc.) AND off the net, typically books, the Usenet often comes to the rescue. The latest case was with configuring my XFree86 Setup. I found the solution on the Usenet in a few minutes and hit myself on the head for not having gone there in the first place. While I don't often use the Usenet (because there's simply too much stuff to go through), when I do need to use it for info, it has almost always been useful. It's still a valuable resource and I don't think it'll be dying out any time soon. Long live the Usenet, probably one of the most underused informational resource available. --e!

Writing unmaintainable code for job security is a Bad Idea (TM). Cuz guess what? You might end up the victim of your own practices -- and who's going to get fired when they've failed to figure out code they wrote a year ago? You. Don't do it. Maye you should work somewhere else where they know how much you're important and valuable to them, so you don't have to take such measures as to write bad code. And if you're going to get replaced so easily then maybe you were not worth your salt in the first place.
