It simply does not work across the board on every system. As far as it has come it still is not easy for a non-techie to get setup and going.

Many of the things that made Linux unique, especially on the desktop, are also what kept it from being something that everyone would want to use. It was not interesting to the masses and never would be. Having a mix of closed source software that fulfills certain needs in a way that no F/OSS has not been able to, does not take away from Linux. It only adds to it.

    Choice is the key.

If you have the choice of being able to use closed source or F/OSS for a certain need, there is absolutely NO downside.

Many think that Linux has to be F/OSS only and that is just plain wrong. There is a middle ground where a proper mix of closed and open source work together to create a powerful desktop for all people, not just the F/OSS or die people, which are definitely a very closed minded group.

That is actually incorrect. Firefox uses less memory than Chrome and actually has a faster start up time. Chrome treats each tab as a separate resource, which has benefits, but also causes it to be more of a resource hog. The interface on Firefox and Chrome are very similar, so that is an interesting take that you have an issue with that and like Chrome. Chrome most certainly has a lot of benefits as well and I like several of them. However certain addons I like Firebug, do not work the same in Chrome and are more of a headache for me personally. I have tried to switch to Chrome several times over changes I dislike on Firefox, but I have never stayed with it as Chrome still has too many things I don't like. I do still however use it for cloud based apps and a few other things. I also use it to test web apps that I develop, so I am very used to how it works in comparison to other browsers.

However it is a blast and the fact that it is easy to play via LAN with friends makes it a great addition. Choice is a good thing!

I just do not like it and judging by all the political moves they have to keep making just to survive it seems most others do not as well.

Just because they have had something for a while now, does not mean that Firefox, which is a far more popular browser, getting it is not a big deal. Opera has good plugins, but they have never been as good or easy to use. I think Chrome has already passed them up on quality plugins.

I do empathize though. If Opera would have made better decisions on distribution of the browser freely early on who knows where they could be?

Actually despite the "love" for Microsoft here, their biggest problem is marketing more than anything. I personally have seen far fewer technology issues or gui issues over the last year or two than ever before. A lot of that has to do with the threat of Apple on the desktop and Linux on the server. However for what ever reason they have not fixed their other achilles heel, marketing.

It is one are they have never been good at and they have not realized that it, more than anything has hurt them.

Apple on the other hand is great at marketing and even better at targeting the MS customers base. Google has their own unique way of marketing, because they own the online search and understand how to get the word out with out commercials. Microsoft? they get more mention on the Apple vs Microsoft commercials than their own.

The sad fact is for Linux to really get into more data centers and eventually corporate desktops they are going to have more interoperability with Microsoft. Microsoft is dominate in more data centers than it is not and most companies I have worked with will only allow Linux to be used in "large system applications" like Oracle and such.

The main concern is with security ( I know it sounds laughable). Not with Windows or Linux but with the current solutions for interoperability like Samba, AD technology, etc. A lot of companies will not allow those technologies in their data centers due to security policies.

Microsoft Server 2003+ is not near the security issue it was in previous versions and Linux is "known" for being more secure, but the link between them is not at this time.

Personally any system is only as secure as the people who set it up. I have done pen testing on most of the major systems and find that you can set both up to be almost just as secure as the other and the opposite is true as well. Most people here hear Windows and assume it is just as bad as it once was and has not done the research to have any true understanding and only go with the crowd. I personally prefer Linux, but have no problems with Windows other than I hate monopolies.

Even though it is faster I still prefer FireFox. I can tweak FireFox myself and make it a lot faster than it is out of the box. I have my set of extensions I like that make my life easier. I have not been able to duplicate that in Opera or Safari. Speed is always good, but it is not the only important thing to me. Whatever browser I am most comfortable in and works best for me is what I use. I know it is hard to go with the idea different people have different ideas of what makes something the best. In my opinion...

Firefox gives me what I need to do what I want. Is it perfect? hell no, but it is the most complete browser for my use. Allows me to sync my plugins and favs between my windows and Linux systems.

Opera is a good solid browser and easy to use. Even though it is proven to be faster it "seems" slower. I do not know a better way to put it. Easily my second favorite browser though.

Safari, do not have or want a Mac and the windows version is not all that impressive. Use it for checking my web designs and that is about it.

Licensing can be key to a organizations success and while I agree Open Source should have a meaning you have to have the ability to have some "one offs" or it will not be a true success. Some people take that to the extreme and really make it no longer truly open source.

However if you go to far you make it where no one wants to use it and it becomes no longer relevent.

SPAM as has been argued is everywhere snail mail, email, phone, even tv. Also as argued most everything but email is paied for by the spammer.
I have seen first hand working in a company with over 80,000 employees how much SPAM can really cost a company. It is literally in the millions and that is not a one time cost. You have to set up filters, maintain them or pay for someone to do it, and then employ additional people to manage the infrastructure. Now at my current company despite the cost they can afford it. My previous company was a much smaller Health Care organization with around 2,500 employees. Even there we had to spend $300,000 to get set up and then the maintenance cost. It really hurt the company to have an expense like that just to stop SPAM. We were always looking at lower cost alternatives.
I also believe that a lot of SPAM is brought on by the people themselves. Not all of it, but quite a bit. When you register at most places with you home or work email you are just asking for SPAM. I know most places may not share the information, but all it takes is one company or even just one person to sell your info to these so called marketing companies. I tend to have a SPAM email account that I use just to sign up at sites (currently Yahoo).
In any case Email SPAM to me is more of a problem than the other forms just because the cost to companies. I really do not give a shit about the ISPs as I believe if you pay for a service you should get it without additional cost, but something has to be done.
