    Yup, that little programmer published in Transactor Magazine for the C64 was a life changing event.
        None of this instant, ebay gratification you whippersnappers have. 4 weeks and 2 email (Fidonet) exchanges
        with the author and I had something that burned a 2732 in less that 5 minutes!
        And God was it horrible looking.

    Read RFC1912 - no, it's not for SMTP, but a requirement of being on the net in general.
    Note the "loss of internet services" - of which smtp is.

          Make sure your PTR and A records match. For every IP address, there
          should be a matching PTR record in the in-addr.arpa domain. If a
          host is multi-homed, (more than one IP address) make sure that all IP
          addresses have a corresponding PTR record (not just the first one).
          Failure to have matching PTR and A records can cause loss of Internet
          services similar to not being registered in the DNS at all. Also,
          PTR records must point back to a valid A record, not a alias defined
          by a CNAME. It is highly recommended that you use some software
          which automates this checking, or generate your DNS data from a
          database which automatically creates consistent data.

    Note: the article picks on all "OLDSQL" engines, so don't be so smug in having Postgres to choose
    from. It's are next on the bashing list.

    If people were complaining about how /slow/unreachable/screwed up/ Facebook was, this might have
    been an actual article and not FUD about Mysql. But they aren't. Even Google has an investment in
    mysql. and there is very little complaint about how reachable they are. If it ain't broke - invent something
    new and PROFIT!

    Agreed. And any customer who invests in a company wasting their time on artificially protecting their "IP" and adding it to the customers expense shouldn't be rewarded. It's akin of Stanley telling you that you can't drive a screw with a hammer. Why should they care. As soon as AT&T sells an open Android phone (not that Motorola flip) , Apple will receive the results of my angst.

    From the CNN linked article... "The Redmond behemoth asserts that one reason free software is of such high quality is that it violates more than 200 of Microsoft's patents." Funny, Microsoft owns the patents and you guys code it in a higher quality fashion? I'm suitably impressed that the FOSS coders are better at coding STABLE projects than the owner of the patents. GOOD WORK, folks!
