    It's not the accident part they are emphasizing, it's the intension part. If a court awards you damages in a civil case, and I pay you them, but afterwards another court overturns the case, I can demand you to pay back the money.

    That just doesn't fly with the judicial system.

    That does fly with the civil legal system we have. The judicial system has to apply the law and not invent one in areas where there is no law.

    I'd also be interested how it is that someone sending me some kind of wire transfer would obligate me paying the costs of that transfer.

    It's the same principle as in US with the cell phone carriers. You receive a call and you PAY, or to more extreme you receive an SMS and and you still pay.
    Whenever you receive money via a bank transfer to your account, the banks usually charge some % or some predefined sum, though mostly they limit those charges to certain types of transfers.

    Heh... Why shouldn't RedHat be as liable as Microsoft? I am no fan of Micro$oft, but I am a fan of fairness. And everyone that sells copyrighted material should have same liabilities.

    That law would probably concern all copyrighted material and would, most probably, not be applied for free stuff. That is, where a contract has not been made = free stuff. Since a purchase is still a contract, in a certain legal sense. But IANAL.

    Are Europeans that big of pussies? What is wrong with "tell your friends they suck, don't eat there" and watch their business evaporate? You can't be serious that the government steps in for things like this!?

    And this is probably coming from someone in US, where you ask the police to ask a neighbor to turn down the music, where you ask the flight attendant to talk to parents of that kid sitting behind you and last, but not the least, where lawsuits are a really nothing out of the ordinary!(Sorry for exaggerating, but so was the parent)
    Believe it or not, not the whole world is US and should not be. We have different views and would like to keep them that way.

    Because finances, contrary to property, can fuck up the whole system. As seen by the bailout.

    If you have a job where you bring value by knowledge and thinking, you are better off in public transport. Because a well run public transport can be a place where you can actually start working and planning your work before getting to work. As a driver, driving itself takes too much of your concentration of making the time spent in the car productive. It takes me 30-35 minutes to get to work, but I get to work 1 hour later then everyone else, and leave 1 earlier. Because I "work" in the public transport: I plan my day in the morning, think of the decisions I have to make, making certain decisions, I sum up my day in the evening and plan my next steppes. I know that if I were driving, I would either crash thinking as much as I do on public transport or I would not think of my work. In any case, driving in bad driving conditions is just a waste of time and nerves. And no way would I consider it good returning to my family all cranky after even 30 minutes in a traffic jam.

    Hm... You must be new to development? None will upgrade just for the fun of upgrading.
    To make people upgrade you need them to want new functionality. And increasing the price for new functionality as time progresses, you can then tell the client that the with the new version new functionality will cost less and you can even tell them how much they would "save" ;)

    There are things Windows does better than Linux especially software installation.

    That is why Ubuntu is much more popular. Apt, Synaptic and Add/Remove Programs win out over ANY Windows software installation mechanism out there.

    Hello! Let me introduce myself, I am deposed general of Nigeria...
    But seriously, I have Lenovo IdeaPad S10e with Windows XP, I haven't been able to get connected to my wireless router till 2 updates for the wireless drivers for Windows. On Ubuntu 9.04 they just WORK. In fact, most of things JUST WORK. Even things that you would not expect to work.

    Yet people drop more than that amount for 'Apple remote desktop' which is SSH, VNC, SCP, and a few tricks. Or check out the price of Acrobat 9, Simply Accounting Premium (with Reports!!!111), or Filemaker Pro 10...

    Suddenly you are forgetting that people buy things that bring value. No matter how sophisticated Windows might be, if it has no function the buyer needs there will be no sale.
    Now when people see real value, they will throw bucket loads of money at the thing giving value.
    Same goes for software development, you can't sell your boss/client the idea that you should spend more time on your work just to make it more sophisticated.

    Oh, and next time try comparing to something more expensive, like AutoCAD?

    Ha! Windows sucks following your logic. Why? I have Vodafone Mobile Connect card and I need not install any drivers on Ubuntu, just insert the card click connect and everything is integrated! With Windows? I have to install the specialized software, that I have to launch before I insert the card. WTF? So in my view Windows sucks.

    I would not agree to that. Having been on Ubuntu as my primary desktop for 9 months now, I can say that there are no reasons for loosing any time. Maybe you should remove those critic's goggles and approach Linux with a more open mind. Because your commentary stinks of prejudice.
    The only item that keeps me coming back to windows are some of the applications.
    In any case most of things are done via the browser nowadays, so I don't really care about the OS much.
    As for drivers?I have 2 proprietary drivers on my laptop: nVidia and Broadcom. Both were installed like a charm via one click. I mean it takes longer on Windows to update those things.

    That is absolutely not true. I use as much of command line now in Linux as I do on Windows. I have people using my computer that are as computer illiterate as they get.

    Oh phulease... Most support is done via the OEM channels, MS's consumer support is basically crap.
    Now MSDN Premium was named Premium for a reason.

    I will give you other items such as:
    - broader support for drivers (more useful and useless options)
    - more software(freeware or otherwise)*
    - a more unified look and feel

    On a sidenote, if you like holistic experience you probably will LOVE Apple products. They don't get much holistic as Apple Mac's.

    * - though I have not had issues with not finding software that I or my, computer illiterate, family members needed.
