What are you trying to say? America is entirely different from what they do in Russia.
Over in America they don't block your website. They read your e-mail, & if they think they might not like you, they kidnap you without charges, torture you for a few years without trial & then release you like 'Oops! We made a mistake. No hard feelings hey! BTW. We're watching you.'
At any price, all to protect the liberty and freedom of people with no guaranteed healthcare, education or welfare and a user pays justice system......and maybe to protect their owner's owner's business interests in dictatorships across the globe.
So, now java is GPL'd, does that mean I might be able to build a 1.6 JDK that runs on a hardened (i.e. RSBAC) server optimised for amd64? So, BTW,what have you been running your enterprise's mission critical Java apps on? a VM? (^-^) Compile once, then.......this is about Java becoming what it's always pretended to be.
At the same time, I take your point. Most Unis are making Java programmers. Most big enterprises are using them. Their new proprietary clunkers that their existence depends on are Java Their old proprietary clunkers that their existence depends on are COBOL. I once met a Japanese literature major (from the 'right' Uni) in Japan who's BIG ASSED company made her a COBOL programmer. (^-^) and there was one old guy who knew how it all worked...
I would really like to see someone take an aggressive tack with the traditional media distribution industry. Sue them like they sue little old ladies.
I'd like to see them justify why they should get any period of protection under copyright law when they have deliberately and maliciously encoded it like a trade secret, so that it can't be used in the public domain at the end of their protection period. IP law exists to get trade secrets into the public domain, and out of obscure encodings & protection mechanisms.
I'd like to see a nuisance case where one of their customers sue them for breach of their license for personal use.
I'd like to see them get bitch slapped solidly by the WTO or some such for their pitiful attempts to disguise regional price fixing behind copyright licensing
I'd like to see them explain why they get to ignore the rules completely, but expect the most deluded and onerous interpretation of their customers obligations to be taken seriously.
That I would like to see.
I'm not sure the price point they're aiming at is possible without selling it to these 'consumerists' you seem to enjoy belittling so much. I'd call them sponsors, supporters maybe benefactors? More over, it seems OLPC are starting to work the economics of this out. Hence their management re-jiggles. Ideals are great. At the end of the day you still have to engage with the constraints of physical reality.
Do you think that kids in developing nations should 'make do' with second rate kit that their country has paid for? This seems to be your message. What are you trying to say? Do you think they should take it apart & wipe the back of their keyboard with alcohol, or risk permanently damaging it? (as you did in your fix it link. Did you link to your own post? (^_^)) Is this the non-consumerist philosophy you're espousing?
Actually from all reports OLPC seem to be handling the problem well. If OLPC does regret the support of their G1G1 sponsors after they've pointed out flaws in a design that they are selling to developing countries, then shame on them. I doubt it though. They seem to be struggling to get pay checks from developing nations (whoda thunk it)
If developing nations are finding the money to invest in laptops for their children, then they should be worth every penny. If people are volunteering contributions (in whatever form) to assist those developing nations, then who are you to run around labelling them 'consumerists'? Are you still trying to get your keyboard back in? Maybe you should have opted for return to base & let the pros handle it.
I don't think you get it. IBM does 'big' computers. These 'big' computers run linux. They run linux for lots of very good reasons. Some silly desktop software makers think it's impossible to make cross-platform software from a single source tree, so they make software for Microsoft, because Microsoft have the biggest desktop market share.
Normally you'd need a Microsoft box to run these silly software maker's desktop software. Some of these silly software makers are smart enough to maintain a Mac version though. so sometimes (if you need a silly software maker's software) you can avoid Microsoft (and all the associated trouble) by getting a Mac to run silly but essential desktop software.
Mac OS isn't going to replace Linux at IBM any time soon, for lots of very good reasons. It might replace some Microsoft boxes at IBM, for lots of very good reasons.
An 'American' (from The United States) thinks that "China is way too nationalistic, expansionist, and subversive". The hypocrisy is breathtaking
This from a country who's ignorant masses believe not so much in their manifest destiny to rule the world, but rather that they already do. That it is their right to destroy another country and grind it into the dust, because some of their companies might make a buck in the process. What is wrong with South American independence? What is wrong with African independence? What is wrong with Middle Eastern independence?
I haven't watched them in years - even when they have been in the USA. Q.E.D.
The focus of most protests wasn't about Tibetan independence. The focus of most protests wasn't about China having the Olympics.
I think China should have the Olympics because America's economy is about to go basket case, & a construction boom with happy bells & whistles in China might just keep Australia from falling into the hole America makes. Some of the protests (Australia's Prime Minister for one) were saying 'Maybe Tibetan Chinese would like you more if you stopped beating and shooting them.' That's not deluded hippy talk.
Yes there are some deluded hippies that think China should just release it's territory to the remaining native population and take home all the people they've settled there just because the native population don't like them. These are the same deluded hippies who think the world gives a rats whether they think China should have the Olympics. Actually they are the type that think the Olympics are an opportunity to get 'their' cause noticed
However, taking a torch relay through Tibet like you're all one big happy family and expecting to beat everyone into compliance for the cameras......ready for an international (or even national) PR victory......now that's deluded.
The protests were about abuse of human rights. Does your entire family support abusing human rights? If Tibetans are Chinese, then do you support killing Chinese? Do you support abusing Chinese? Then why don't you protest?
obviously the byte code connection......and the lack of an actionscript icon. I would have thought it warranted a good hard think & a review of peoples blind faith in the interpreter to save them from baddies. Don't you think people will start searching the Java interpreter for a similar problem? I do take your point though, that perhaps.net might be a more rewarding field to dig in...
lol......your government already reads our e-mail for them. As I understand it, we are good enough to return the favoUr. They are asking for permission to do what they already do with impunity. If they aren't, then someone else is. If you aren't encrypting it, you should expect it to be read. I like that you have a dysfunctional healthcare system, a dysfunctional educational system, a dysfunctional welfare system & all you're worried about is loosing your gun. Actually that's probably sensible if you're surrounded by ignorant starving bleeding voters.
I have an eeepc. It's sweet. It's like the laptop I've been looking for since 2001. I even sketched roughly the collection of ports, etc. I'm an Architect I dream with my pen.
Things I never dreamed of in 2001? I had hoped for 128ram, 256rom. 4G? OMFG YES!!! WANT! At the time you needed some sort of military spec laptop to get that sort of stuff. They did NOT cost AU$500!
Things that could be better? I drew an 800x600 screen. Also a three hour battery life sucks. These things are clearly being addressed for the next version though.
What would make me hunger for a peice of geek tech like that again? What do I seek now that the eeepc is realising my dreams?
I want an eeepc like device with an open OS (preferably readily Gentoo-able) that has a built in GSM/3G phone, that will connect to a stereo bluetooth headset, take calls & play music from a breifcase/backpack in a kind of 'standby' mode, perform the above functions for 24-48hrs without a recharge, recharge from a USB port/brick (ipod style), do USB host & device &/or run like a laptop for 8-12 hours without a recharge. solid state disk. This is my new dream laptop.
I also have a desktop. I don't want one of those pitiful attempts to replace a desktop, (doomed to failure), that is only portable on a car seat......seriously you don't take those with you unless you're in sales or tech support & have NO other choice......& a car. It's about as portable as a tool box.
To people who think they should be no more than $100? Seriously. I spent about that on a cheap dinner & too many rounds of beer last night (Wed) Asus gave me my dream geek toy. That's worth $500 to me. Maybe you aren't their target market. See if they'll sell you less than 1400 OLPCs (^-^)
Well, onboard sound is getting better, for what that's worth. And surround can be physically a pain to setup, assuming it's supported in the games you want to play.
But I think the real problem here is that just about every sound you're going to be listening to is already compressed mp3, range-compressed to hell. It's kind of like suggesting upgrading your monitor or video card if you're only going to be watching YouTube. Hopefully at least a few developers are using high quality sounds in their games... (^-^) some people use their computers for more than just gaming. (^-^) I hear that there are some people who use their computer to, like, MAKE games. for real!!! They might even, like, have the original CDs & everything, like before they became.MP3s
Correct me if I'm wrong. The lecture is a performance. As I understand it, the students could walk in & record the whole thing, and then sell THEIR recording. Then again, I don't live in America. Copyright law's pretty much back to front over there, privileging means at the expense of ends.
You mean to say 'a defence of their rights under law'. If successful, then a successful defence of their rights under law, against what, if not the abuse of their rights under law? or rather threats of retribution, should they choose to exercise their rights.
Seriously! What do you mean when you say 'it is only a defence'. You make defence against an aggressor sound like a bad thing.
So what do you call the base unit of data in a base three system? Clearly bits doesn't cut it. Is this one of those quantum things like 'as the amount of data in a base 3 system becomes known in base 2, then the chances of knowing how or why to do anything useful with the data exponentially approaches 0
Request for all machines that searched for "TSA" , "Liquid" , and "explosive" for ongoing terrorist investigation would suddenly seem quite dubious without better specifics.
They don't have to ask google for that. They index that themselves. Quite dubious? (^-^) Perhaps a little like George Dubious, in that without specifics they are searching for a clue
Why is it so hard to accept that a higher power could have designed a system as beautiful as evolution? Is it because that would call into question simplistic literal interpretations of the particular translation of the bible most convenient this week? (By simplistic literal interpretation I mean interpretations devoid of anything even vaguely resembling biblical exegesis)
Why is calling one person's convenient interpretation of a book into question such a problem for you? It wouldn't be about control mechanisms would it?
As I understand it, there were at least 7 distinct creation myths in the different tribes of Judea. Two of them were muddled together into the bible cut, one of them from the tribe that became the clergy (about dust, misogyny & such) and one from the house of David (something about seven days & resting on Saturday, or was that Sunday). At least that's what they told us in Sunday school. Here in Australia we have wonderful native creation myths about rainbow serpents and emu spirits. They come with cool pictures.
Wow! You believe in the solar system? The one that turns around Sol? I'm impressed. Doesn't that make you a wicked non-believer or something though? Does this mean you're going to hell? (^-^) Seriously though, you've explained why evolution was and is unlikely to occur on Mercury or Uranus

Wouldn't that be a copper curtain?
Maybe a glass curtain.
Seriously! Who gave the Fox News crew mod points?
or maybe the con-dome
