    Lets put it this way: In Finland ISPs will not change the data.

    "Disturbing telecommunications" is punishable up to two years in prison. And if you are what I think "common carrier" means the minimum penalty is four months jail time.

    The law seems (IANAL) to be written so that ISPs are "common carriers" according to this law.

    Screen: 640 x 240 ... try to run Firefox or Netbeans on that. Something I do with EeePC without problems.

    Maybe I was just lucky but for me 8.04 beta wireless worked flawlessly. On two machines (ZyDAS WLA-54L WiFi and Asus rebranded rt2500 compatible).

    The only complaint I can give is that during installation ("alternative cd") WPA2 cannot be used.

    This may depend on the jurisdiction, but in Finland even if higher-ups forbid something (or tell you to do something) it does not give you "get out of jail" card. You are personally responsible for your actions, if they are illegal - tough.

    others who are guilty of the massive security problems being allowed to propagate. Or "unaware" of the fact (according to the the laws of the court).

    I would certainly recommend to document everything but still first and foremost stay legal. "Criminally negligent" is not fun, I'd imagine.

    I don't remember Irfanview, but for *nixes the best image viewer was xv. It is extremely light too.

    It still is the best by far if you bother to apply a few patches and compile from sources. Even though it has not been maintained for decades (ok, slight exaggeration :-)

    The problem with MDI is that if you have two pictures open you are screwed.

    BTW, if your desktop background is distracting maybe you should change it.

    Excuse me? You have found one specific case where virtual desktops do not help and then claim "for no good reason"!?

    Even in the case you mentioned it is an advantage to have the tools windows detached - it gives more room for the two pictures as you are free to put the tools where ever you want (even on different virtual desktop would you so prefer).

    I despise GIMP interface (for other reasons like difficulty of readjusting selections or rotating, etc.), but love the detached windows as it just uses less screen real estate.

    But why cannot e.g. 8800 shutdown most of the cores when they are not used? I.e. use only one or two for the compiz or Aero and use all with some whizbang game. Or drop the cores frequency depending on load?

    I have a legitimate right to send SMTP from my machine Show me the law which states that.

    And especially, show me the law and/or contract you have which states you have right to send the SMTP to any other machine beside your ISPs SMTP server.

    I sincerely hope you stay blacklisted.

    And it certainly is not the only reason, quite the contrary.

    You can't blame Microsoft if people don't install security updates. Yes you, partially, can. And should.

    Not to mention that the OS should be reasonably secure without huge amount of patches (no open ports, browser and email does not run everything on sight).

    Every security expert complained about ActiveX back in -90s. It is still there. Who should we blame for that?

    Yeah, let me just back up to where I advocated for repealing the laws on murder and assault. May I help?

    I know it can seem cruel to put a price on human lives. I am not sure if we can "afford the economic cost" of keeping libertarians alive.

    Sure.

    For me the best setting is "disabled". Same with XP ("cleartype disabled" or something, not on XP right now) and Linux ("best shapes").

    Fortunately it is easily changeable per user as I know some people love the subpixel rendering.

    you can't see the colors I can, but I do stare the screen closer than "recommended".

    The "subpixel" antialiasing is the first thing I remove, it is horrible. I sometimes remove the antialising as it with some fonts(? font systems?) blurs too much.

    There are a few companies which do exactly that.

    For example http://www.genelec.com/products/2-way-monitors/8130a/. Genelecs tend to be expensive, but there might be cheaper from other manufacturers (active speaker generally are expensive).

    I'd much rather use S/PDIF (optical) output and separate amplifier than buy expensive sound card.

    You'll most likely get better D/A and the (galvanic) separation from the PC can only be good.

    The GP post is a bit misleading.

    Every shop accepts cash. Every[1]. None of them take any extra fee. None. Only in banks when dealing with a (human) teller you "lose".

    OTOH every adult does have a debit card as it is much easier and safer than a lot of cash. Checks are slow, cumbersome and unreliable, I do not understand them at all.

    [1] Online shops will usually require credit card or COD. COD can have quite a high extra charge.

    I have basically four complaints of OOXML.
    1. Name. It should be changed.
    2. ODF. It exist already, it is better (though far from perfect).
    3. Immaturity. OOXML is far too immature to be ISO standard, it has too many problems, it is too big. Fast track is not appropriate for it.
    4. Compatibility. Microsoft itself will not be compatible with the ISO standard although they will claim it.

    If 1, 3 and 4 are solved I would not have anything against forgetting 2 and giving Microsoft an ISO standard.

    I am in the 10%. Anything bigger than EeePC would be useless for me. Actually it could be a bit thinner and lighter, I wouldn't mind.

    Oh, btw, I mostly run NetBeans and Firefox (java api doc) on it. Both are full screen (+ fuller screen plugin for Firefox) in separate desktop. Yes, bigger screen would make the machine even better[1], but I am extremely happy with the cheap ultra-portable full computer.

    [1] Much better, provided price would not change. More expensive => I wouldn't have bought it.

    Microsoft must be working on "Vista light". I'd figure it is like Vista without Aero and perhaps UAC(sp?).

    Note: I do not know what takes the most (hd/ram) space and (cpu/gpu) power in Vista, but Aero is most likely the main culprit.

    I see a lot of networks too. Unfortunately the signal strength is not reliable (I use wicd, not the original).

    But the wireless is unreliable. It sometimes works like charm and sometimes needs a reboot and sometimes refuses to connect altogether.
