  1. Re:This is a good thing on Mass Effect Delayed to September · · Score: 1

I believe the quote is actually: "A late game is only late until it ships. A bad game is bad until the end of time."

It depends on how you translate it. I got my quote from Wikipedia, fyi. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shigeru_miyamoto
  2. Re:This is a good thing on Mass Effect Delayed to September · · Score: 1

More like: To all those impatient individuals who have already reserved the game, maybe that will teach you not to do that anymore. The good games are always available on or near release day, and all you're doing by reserving early is relieving yourself of access to that $5-$60 for some unspecified period of time.

That kind of thinking doesn't get you a Nintendo Wii.
  3. Infrastructure on In Net Neutrality, It's Jeffersonet Vs. Edisonet · · Score: 1

It's like I've always said, the internet is one humongous frontier in which lawlessness and disarray abound. We've tried to deal with the lawlessness of the net - just take a look at how well security firms are doing - but the disarray, the poor infrastructure, is something the normal user never thinks about. They'll care about where their credit card numbers go, sure, but not how long it takes to get to a particular web page (unless they run a 56k modem).

But since I long for the day of rich communication apps and online gaming, I'd like an improved infrastructure so heavy applications can get their work done smoothly. How would somebody (or a group of people, for that matter) go about organizing infrastructure?

  4. Cash crop? Yeah... on Ten Years of FFXIII? · · Score: 1

The reason why the FF7 spinoffs weren't as great was for several reasons: there was minimal backstory given for the original game by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the series, and when he left a lot of that information and the original meanings behind the setting and characters. The reasons sequels were made to FF7 was because so many fans DEMANDED it! They would have done it earlier if they wanted to, trust me.

Now the fact that FFXIII's universe is going to be expansive and elaborate from the very beginning of its development is beneficial to the story. The spinoff games might not be as bad as the FFVII sequels. I still wish we got more of the Ivalice series, though. FFXII's gameplay was a huge improvement. Though I think the system would've been better with jobs instead of the licenses to earn abilities. And I can't wait to see the remade FFTactics, too! As well as FFXII: Revnant Wings. These games are made by the same team that developed Vagrant Story and FFTactics, so I know 100% I'm going to enjoy them. ...and they sure as hell had better improve the translation to the FFTactics remake! For goodness sakes, I had to play through the game six times to understand the story! On the other hand, I didn't even get bored once due to the huge amount of gameplay variety.

  5. Times have changed on Nanotubes May Improve Solar Energy Harvesting · · Score: 2, Interesting

It seems like two or three years ago nobody cared about research into solar energy, and now every other day an article pops onto slashdot about new ways of harnessing the sun's energy. Must be the Al Gore Effect. I'm not saying it is a bad thing, though.

As for this particular subject, it makes sense to research beings that already use this type of resource on their own. It would be interesting to see if we can even harvest chlorophyll so we could implant colonies of it onto solar cells. It'd be like the old potato and light bulb science project kids do.

  6. This is a good thing on Mass Effect Delayed to September · · Score: 2, Insightful

Whenever I hear a studio with a good reputation is delaying a video game it reminds me of a saying from a very wise individual:

"A delayed game is eventually good; a bad game is forever."

To those unfortunate individuals who have already reserved the game awaiting its release, I can sympathize with you. After all, this quote comes from Shigeru Miyamoto, the man who delayed Zelda 64's release for two years, ultimately becoming one of the best games of all time!

So take heed, the game's probably just getting all its kinks ironed out to be the best it can be!

  7. But it costs money! on gTalk To Get Video Boost? · · Score: 1

It sounds like an excellent alternative to Skype since their video chat software is still in beta. Marratech's profits are made from its software, though, so I wonder how the company could earn money if Google made the software available free on gTalk? I'm not a businessman nor am I too familiar with how Google deals with companies that it's purchased, so if the question's been answered pay no heed.

It would be interesting to know if Google employees could transfer to Sweden, though. :D

  8. I don't understand what the problem is... on Google's Data-Storage Fuels Privacy Fears · · Score: 1

Look, any deleted e-mails can be found if you searched hard enough. I talked with a recruiter for an e-mail security firm, and he confirmed this statement. Maybe Google is eliminating some of the detective work involved in this issue, but otherwise they're not offering anything a good Computer Forensics or Information Networks course can't teach you.

And also, most of the money Google earns is through advertising. The better and more accurate it can advertise a product to you, the better job it's doing, and the more money it makes. It isn't as though the company became rich simply by programming a search engine (a damn good one, at that), so you can expect Google will want to keep track of its users' behaviors in order to maintain its profit margin.

  9. But when this stuff arrives in court... on When Tax Day Comes to Azeroth · · Score: 1

I remember hearing of a court case a while back where someone was suing for stolen online property, or property lost on a server, or something of that notion, back when Everquest was the popular mainstay. I don't know if the plaintiff succeeded in the case, but if such a case passed it would say that there is legal grounds to give monetary (real world) value to these objects, and as such that gives countries the basis to tax these objects.

However while there is a "basis" for the argument, the only way it can be taxed is if there is a transaction.

Another case for the debate is Second Life, where real dollars are traded for real estate and their own currency (Linden dollars). It's a place where people legitimately manufacture and sell things like clothing, works of art, games, buildings, etc. Some of the things people make are pretty nice, too. The point, though, is that there are some people who actually make a living solely by making goods for sale in Second Life. In this case, taxation is an issue.

  10. On the other hand... on Louisiana to Pay $92,000 After Game Law Fight · · Score: 1

what politician wants to be considered a video game supporter? "Tough on crime, supports after-school programs, supports video games. Vote John Smith for Congress." Nobody will ever go out of their way to protect video games. And since those who don't care about video games will never speak out on their indifference, that only leaves the anti-video game activists to clog the airwaves and court systems. And Louisiana has much better things to do with their tax dollars than fighting video games, such as hurricane Katrina recovery.

  11. It makes sense... on Sony Readying for Larger HDD PS3 ? · · Score: 1

If you want to download games large enough to fit onto CDs, and if they still want that thing to be an entertainment center to download television shows and movies, then yeah, I'd consider having a hard drive a bit larger than 60 Gigs.
