I have no experience with any of the Blackbaud products but it looks like they has something from them.
I bet your energy usage calculation would be higher if you included what you use while at work. Since this family works from home I bet there are many items running for 8+ hours/day that you have turned off when you go to work.
Well, I am not sure about the climate control system being shut down. I believe the article is talking about RDS-TMS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_Message_Channel which can be sent along with a radio signal and someone could sent bogus info.
