  1. Re:The right tool for the right job. on Byte: FreeBSD vs Linux Revisited · · Score: 1

I don't think it's comparing apples to oranges at all... unless you compare BSD standards to SYSv standards...... Otherwise I think, as this review shows, Linux and FreeBSD are basically Neck-and-Neck in the server department. Don't get me wrong, I think FreeBSD is still good, but I personally use Linux and like the it more than any *BSD standard variant....

  3. Panda Project on Low-cost Reconfigurable Computing (FPGA's) · · Score: 1

I wasn't able to read what the post-script file said (nor do I have a pdf reader on this system), but from the description on the slashdot posting it almost sounds like what the Panda Project team was trying to do. Maybe someone that was able to read the article could tell me if this "new" idea is similar to the Panda Project.

Screw microwave. If you guys have a line-of-sight to the ISP, or near the ISP then you can get service like http://www.terabeam.com/hom.html. Supposedly the current technology only allows up to 5 miles, but that's at speeds up to 155Mb/s. I could be wrong, as I've only done a minimum amount of research on it, but if you have enough money to spend on equipment, maybe you could hop-scotch around the area. One equipment provider is http://www.conversant.com/.

  5. Bad tidings on US Starts Attacking Afghanistan · · Score: 1

I have only one thing to say, in all seriousness: Cry havoc and let loose the dogs of war. Hopefully the Taliban doesn't decide to now launch more terrorist attacks against the US. Also, depending on which of the Talibans friends decide they don't want to put up with the US... we might have them attacking as well. I certainly hope everything doesn't go to "hell" in a short while.

  7. freeboxen on What Do You Do With Old Computer Parts? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Whatever happened to the one website, either freeboxen.com or freeboxen.net? It was like a ebay kinda site where people put up lists of hardware they didn't need any people could request it. All they typically had to pay was shipping.

  8. Lexx has an answer on Higgs Boson Discovery Questioned · · Score: 1

Well, if anyone has been watching Lexx (on the Sci-Fi channel), the whole storyline so far this season is that Earth is a type 13 planet who is about to be shrunk to the size of a pea when we discover the Higgs boson. All I can say is, His Shadow lives!!!

  9. Indrema marketing changes on Whisperings from Indrema · · Score: 2

Well, I think the Indrema is a great idea. The problem is, the way they're setting up the marketing of the console and the distribution model isn't really going to work. What needs to be setup is a distribution model similar to what Sega did way-back-when, when they had the Sega Channel where you could download games through cable (although they wouldn't use the same distribution method for the indrema of course), and played them until another set of games could be downloaded. What Indrema needs to do is position the L600 as THE digital content endpoint, so that you go online, check out the games you want, possibly setup via a monthly fee or pay-per-game/play method. Also the console could be setup to download new games while you're away and let you play and/or preview them. If the console is going to have a hard-drive why not use it to it's full potential? Just my two cents.
