  1. Antec True* 550W on Five Power Supplies Compared · · Score: 1

After several failing power supplies, earlier this year I decided to get a good power supply. I read their review (and assorted other reviews) last year and bought the TruePower 550.

It is pretty quiet and has run great and it is nice to see it running so well against the newer models.

I won't buy another cheap power supply again.

There is at least one valid question here. Many are claiming that the ownership of a CD is not a license.

Many say that you buy a CD and you simply have the right to play that cd with a cd player. Others claim it is legal to copy it under fair-use to your computer as long as you don't play both copies at the same time. Furthermore, some believe that it is legal to make a copy for the car and one for home; as long as only one is used at a time and is for your personal use.

    My questions are:
    A) What if I bought a CD, ripped it to my computer, then destroyed the CD ?
    B) What if I did A and then sold the digital media online and then destroyed my copy of the media?
    C) What if myself and a friend both buy identical copies of a CD, but mine gets lost in a fire.. can I legally make a copy of my friend's CD?

For question A, I believe it should be certainly legal.

Question B would be legal with the possible exception that there MUST be two copies of the media to transfer it via the internet, thus it may violate copyright law, even if the second copy is deleted immediately afterward.

Question C may not be the most legal of things, but given sufficient evidence would any judge really convict one of this? If it is a license of any sort, this should be legal.

I had a problem with the backlight develop within the last month of my 1 year applecare and they offered to replace it; however, due to my own negligence, I never took them up on the offer.

My power adapter also fried a month after my 1 year applecare; unfortunately, this was was yo-yo style and was not covered under Apple's recall. I had to purchase a new one ($90) from my own pocket. I'm not sure if Apple would've replaced this under warrenty or not.

With the exception of the screen problem (which is actually quite minor) and the power adapter problem; the machines themselves are built like bricks. I'm also planning on doing an entire revamp of the powerbook with a new screen, upgrade from 400mhz to 900mhz, a new battery and a faster harddrive; I've recently upgraded the machine to 320 megabytes of memory. The machine just turned 3 years old and yet it will be nearly new and for the fraction of the cost to buy a brand-new box.

I just find it unusual that BitKeeper cannot run on all of the platforms which linux runs on. If you were working on porting Linux to a new platform, you would have to maintain an x86 or ppc linux box to checkin your code which would require keeping the code on an NFS servers so that you could easily compile it and also commit it. I'm fairly certain that PDF also has some features which are device dependant as well. DVI is the best/only truely completely Device Independant format for layout. Of course, Postscript and PDF are fine as long as you stay away from the programable features, which hardly anyone uses anyway :)

  25. If you're asking.. on Is Latex Still Worth Learning? · · Score: 4, Interesting

Then you have no clue about the purpose of LaTeX, XML, and SGML. That is ok, I can enlighten you :)

LaTeX is a set of macros for TeX. TeX compiles to DVI, TeX input file should produce the same DVI file regardless of which implementation of TeX is used to produce it. When you write something in TeX you know how it will look in the resulting DVI file. DVI is most closely related to PostScript and PDF; however, it is not a programming language like PostScript and only contains positioning and formatting information. DVI stands for "DeVice Independant".

SGML and children (XML and HTML) are structured markup langauges. These are simply designed to store information in a human readable fashion. HTML is a slightly different format which contains formatting but no positioning information. To define positioning information one must apply Cascading StyleSheets (CSS). CSS adds the ability to format and position the text in said markup languages; however, CSS is device dependant.. the result will format/position differently depending on the device/medium on which it is presented.

Thus, if you wish to have your paper look the same regardless of the device it is displayed on; such as for a book, magazine, etc.. then DVI, PDF, or a subset of PostScript (some features are device dependant) will be perfect. If you're looking to display this information across a wide range of machines and faciliting accessibility features such as those used by the blind or the deaf, XML/HTML would be preferrable.

One other mentionable is that the LaTeX macros for TeX really speed and facilitate the process of writing books and research papers by requiring the creation of chapters, sections, and paragraphs. BibTeX will aid in automatically creating a bibligraphy, and LaTeX can automatically create your Table of Contents. Additionally, LaTeX can be easily converted to HTML.
