    I've never had a problem with matrox.. I purchased a Matrox Millenium rev1 when it was brand new without any problems.. I also got a mystique, which also was very nice. I plan to get a quad-head G200 and a dual-head G450 soon.

    Yes, the HAL driver is closed.. and it is is needed for the G200-G400 cards, but the G450 does NOT need the HAL driver for full functionality. I assume (although do not know for sure) that this is because they are planning to have open drivers for all of their new products. The old products already have the binary driver, maybe they will release the source when the g550 comes out?

    My ATI card is pretty cool, but Gatos development just seems to go too slow.. and I still haven't heard of any sucess getting my card (All in Wonder pro 8meg, 3d rage.. mach64 based) working /w DRI.

    Actually, right now I'm having problems with using my All in Wonder in my Xinerama configuration /w extmod enabled... something in the latest debian .deb, recompiling my cvs copy now :)

    7 ways you can make a programmer happy:

    1. Send money, with a note saying how you enjoy the software. I wouldn't mind having cash in the mail, would you?
    2. Send (personal) email, the main author will give you his/her thanks.
    3. Email the mailing list. This way everyone involved in the project will see your gratitude.
    4. Gift..
    I know I was working on a project where 3dfx was generious enough to give everyone on the project a voodoo2 card. Also VaLinux gave out some Geforce and Matrox G400 cards, shirts, and bumperstickers. Beer works too.
    5. Media attention.. hard to get, but if you have the right connections it is really a great thing to do!
    6. Grant the power of the jedi to this young wizard of Vi (as only the dark side would use emacs)

    I learned on slackware..

    Slackware may not autodetect your devices.. but once you learn how to set them up, it isn't a big deal. Redhat and Mandrake try to autodetect stuff, and usually fail.. and doing it The Right WayTM often conflicts with the auto-detection stuff..

    at least thats what I've seen from experience. Also, i've seen Mandrake crash terribly on many systems (usually AMD).

    A file manager like Windows Explorer is the direct opposite of what should be wanted, personally I cannot understand the concept of clicking files anyhow.. if you are going to use Unix though a GUI, you may as well not run Unix at all.

    I know that mozilla/galeon can have a nasty habit of gunzipping files on download.. if your webbrowser is the same, your file is already gunziped. Try to rename it to .ps and open in your favorite postscript viewer.

    This is a well known exploit already, you act as if this is news.. WEP has been broken quite a while ago, and IIRC it was even mentioned on slashdot.

    I am working with a company which plans to roll out 802.11b wireless to a medium-sized city. Sure, it may not be the most secure thing.. but until another solution pops up...

    I hated verizon.. and now I hate them more.

    I just checked the TOS, and it says that users may have their accounts terminated for running servers.. UNLESS they are DSL customers.. this implies (or at least did when I ordered the service) that I may run services on whatever port(s) I wish.

    I am now losing my email and web traffic.. There is no reasonable reason for this treatment. In a month there should be cable here, but it will be @home.. f*cked if I do and f*cked if I don't!

    I guess I'll have to find a mom/pop isp around here reselling DSL. !@#!~

    Where I work, we have multiple boxes running Dual 1000ghz processors /w between 1-2 gigs of ram.. and they aren't powerful enough. Sure, we can build more machines.. and we do, we add at least 2 machines a day.. often more. For us, fast boxes are pretty essential.. for Joe Average Linux user.. he doesn't need much more then a pentiumII :)

    This is what stupid windows users get for being lambs, it is their own fault.

    I see nothing wrong with this software, if I decided I wanted to filter all content feed to my browser.. that is my own decision. If I want to use any ad-busting software, so be it.. if I want to use ad-adding software.. fine.

    This is not a company modifying your site, this is a user modifying their own copy under fair use. If I want to use a stylesheet in my browser to enlarge text for those with poor vision or filter though a speech synthesis program.. would this be any different? I am sorry that I am viewing your content in a way other than it was designed for, but I am allowed to.

    I am not saying that I think anyone ADDING advertisements to their browsing experience is intelligent, but I am saying it is within their rights.

    It is also the fault and within the rights of anyone who installs a virus onto their computer, a propagator of a virus/worm should not be prosecuted for the stupidity of the masses.

    The owner of the document must be responsible! They are responsible for the security of their documents. If they are unfortunate to have a virus send their documents out onto the web, then they have not just one fault in their security. And that fault is their own.

    First, encrypt your important documents.
    Secondly, keep those important documents away from file shares which insecure machines may have access to.
    Thirdly, keep your machines secure! This means either running a secure operating system like Unix or removing the network and physical access to your windows boxen.

    Victims of computer virii are victims of their own stupidity.

    I've owned the first edition since it was released, but I have never had the time to read it. I finally began reading it the other day (yes, I know it is ancient).. I was wondering if there was a 2nd release, I mean.. how much do I really need to know about making my drivers backwards compatable for Linux 1.2.x ?

    I am really considering the possibilities of Satillite tv. Where I live, we had a mom&pop cable company.

    This mom&pop company was reselling time warner provided cable I believe, then they were bought by another mom/pop.. eventually they got sold to AT&T, and now to Comcast. We still don't have digital cable or cable modems, just basic cable and some "premier channels" such as comedy central, hbo, etc.

    I am hopeing that with the recent purchase by Comcast we will finally get digital cable here, but I'm not placing any bets. I really liked my fiancee's sat.

    Protests are definately the way.

    Sure, letters are fine.. sure, get journalists to write articles.. but it is passive. Nobody will take you seriously unless they realize that this is important enough for you to take off from work, sit outside all day, and tell others about it. Protestors are doing more by just being there then they ever could by being at home, why? because it becomes realized that REAL PEOPLE are affected by the law, not just a bunch of numbers which exist only on the internet. We need to stand up more and protest against against devious laws and actions by companies.

    I would really like to see some protests against Microsoft Hailstorm, not because I hate Microsoft.. but because Hailstorm is the first step in Microsofts plans of world domination.

    Yeah, closed source is good and well.. but only if it can be run across platforms without recompiling. I'd like to see 1/2 the closed source linux applications run on my PowerPC, Sparc, or Arm -based machined. I do like some things about KDE for use by my mother, but for now I'll stick with my Gnome :)

    Loki has a similiar book although I am not sure if it is released yet, although I have read the pdf... for a book of this kind, it is very good.

    The most it goes into 3d is explaining how to interface to OpenGL though SDL, but (rightfully) explains that OpenGL is worthly of its own book.

    I can't remember the exact title, Programming Linux Games? something like that.

    Nope, flash plugin is included in IE and Netscape browsers in windows and macos.. no extra download required.

    I think the flash plugin is also installed with Netscape Communicator 4.x for Linux if you use the installer from Netscape.com, it usually is not included by the distributions... especially not debian :)

    I think you forgot that Java runs on Linux, if it doesn't run on Windows.. nobody will use it, and instead will use something that doesn't run on Linux.

    Sad really that the linux community just prays microsoft won't do something evil, and they just do anyway. Someone has to put their foot down and stop microsoft.. but how do you stop a 400lb Gorilla?

    That is true, a fork could be done.. however, that would require quite a bit of work. It would be nice if ones copyright was assumed transferred by commitment or by electronic decree, rather than snail-mail/fax.

    First, before anyone asks.. OpenOffice is licensed under the following licenses.
    GNU General Public License (GPL)
    GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL)
    Sun Industry Standards Source License (SISSL)

    The problem I find with contributing to OpenOffice is that they will not accept code submissions over 10 lines of code if one has not assigned copyright to Sun. This can not be done electronically, only by snail mail or fax.

    I was considering helping but I'd like to keep my copyright. Also, I'd have to sell out the bucks for the upgrade to OSX :)

    BTW, to those who asked.. openoffice just opens a large window and draws its own widgets inside of it, so the platform issue of toolkits/apis is at a minimum.

    One thing to consider is that GAIM is _NOT_ an AIM client, it is an extendable instant messaging application which has support for some AOL services.

    Other than AOL's services Oscar and TOC, it supports: napster, irc, zyphar, yahoo messanger, msn messanger, jabber, and ICQ.

    Of course there are all the other facts like AOL not registering a trademark for "AIM", etc..

    The GAIM guys can win, but will they go poor doing it? It sucks to live in a society where freedom == money.

    If Ruby really is that good, it will get its 15 minutes of fame. The simple fact that it is appearing on slashdot in such a style shows that a community is evolving for it. Once that community matures, it could easily takeover the positions of Perl and Python as they join the ranks of TCL and SmallTalk.

    It is a vicious downward Spiral.
