Mol cannot boot linux, however.. it can only run MacOS. It is closer to Win4Lin then any other x86 software I am aware of. Many applications that are very likely to crash MacOS are usually not runnable by MOL, such as (hardware accelerated) OpenGL or device drivers.
Such is VMware, for that matter. VMware has the advantage of emulating some hardware and having a full x86 bios, although as I am sure you are aware.. it does have its limitations. MOL just has more limitations.
MOL is good if you need Photoshop, rather then the gimp, without leaving linux.. or any other MacOS software. I just see running MacOS software as a Niche', not many people have any need to do so.
I found MOL nice for watching those Sorenson and DivX;-) movies before FFmpeg and 3ivx came around on ppc-linux. (note that Sorenson still doesn't play in linux, but more people are moving away from using that Codec)
As the subject reads, I do not approve of the practices of spammers.. I do not like spam, either.. However, are we not imposing limitations of speech to these people? Is spam not speech?
I really do not want to hear an argument to this stating that spam is not good, hence it should be banned.. To Microsoft, Linux is not good, should it be banned?
And if the argument of one is that laws against spam are for the greater good, this implies that laws should be passed for the greater good regardless of the consequenses. Who decides what the greater good is? Microsoft, the government(s), or some other "trustworthy" source?
Think before you leap into allowing speech to be limited.
I've had MOL running a LONG time ago, but I ended up removing it as I found no need for it. Same reason I find vmware completely useless. I have no reason to run MacOS or Windows software from my linux boxen, the Linux boxen can do everything I require.
I guess stuff like this could be useful for some..
Do you really think that having key escrow will really work!? Do you even realize that the majority of cryptographic software is manufatured outside of the USA, where the USA has no jurisdiction. Do you really think that Afganistian will stop using the cryptographic software already available?
All this will do is make it tougher for ignorant, naive americans to keep their data secure.
First my complaint, "How fun is too fun?", in the subject line gets kicked by the lameness filter.
I consider my tech-job fun, well.. it is ok. I have to deal with clients on the phone a lot, which sucks.. However, I have been learning a lot of system administration skills which I didn't have before, which I find fun.
I can dress however I want, my hours are set but flexible.. and I make a 1/2 decent salary. Yesterday I was sort of forced by a client to learn quite a bit more about SSL then most knew existed.. being an administrator isn't always just knowing how to do stuff, but learning how to do it within an hour:)
Many people, especially administrators and programmers are not hired because of their skills.. but how easily they adapt to new environments, software, and technologies. So someone being hired who is a pro at 10 languages, may be hired for an 11th which he barely knows.. as they will be more suitable for the position who ONLY knows that single language.
Btw, I'm at work and listening to Bob Dylan.. quite loud, nobody seems to mind;)
That is a good point, I often say that running the latest and greatest thing is the best.. (debian) but it also makes you more compatable with whatever worms may exist..
sure, my old linux 1.x box with a.out may be taken by a worm exploiting an hole in telnetd, sendmail, etc.. but the worm won't execute on the a.out/libc5 based box;)
But keeping up to date with debian woody will really keep a box pretty secure too.. for the most part.
Why does the mainstream insist on running old software that continues to have holes exploited?
I'm not talking about microsoft products only.
Why do people do an install of RedHat or Mandrake from CD? This is !@#% stupid. Maybe I am biased, being a user of debian.. but doing an upgrade every few days of ALL my software, makes me feel a little more secure..
Sure, the latest/greatest program can have a bug too.. but there is less chance that I have a hole then the chance that mr Redhat or mr NT Wormstation having a hole. If your software is old enough to be burned on a cd, it is too old.
Note this is not saying that all old software is bad, some old software is quite secure and stable.. but the easiest way to keep on top of things is to run an OS with an apt/ports system.
Well, this is good for workstations. What about servers? Upgrade often, but if you run debian.. don't use sid.. use testing (currently woody), usually still very secure but also has extra stability and maybe even security.
As does Verizon's... who is also blocking port 80 and 25 now. Bastards. Considering I don't have to worry about broadband this no longer affects me, but it is the thought that counts.
Yes, it is their responsibility. Not only are they responsible, but in every TOS I have ever seen.. they explicitly forbid the spreading of a virus or worm. If you get infected by worm, that is your fault for being stupid.. and stupid people don't belong on the net:)
I wonder the same thing. Star/Open office is designed to look like and replace Microsoft Office, however.. I find that Koffice is much faster, more stable, and supports antialiasing.
I personally use Gnome, and don't really like KDE for my own usage.. but nothing on the Unix platform performs like Kpresenter for powerpoint presentations.. and it has AA which is essential for powerpoint.
I don't know how good Kword is in comparison to Abiword, I personally use Abiword and it is very stable on x86 and PowerPC. It isn't fully featured, but it does what I need. Some people do need tables in their word processor, amongst 400 other seemingly useless features.
In short, OpenOffice is the only portable opensource FULLY-featured wordprocessor.. but it has a shitty powerpoint tool in comparison to Kpresenter. It is also slow and buggy. If you don't need all the features of OO's wordprocessing or require AA, use AbiWord or Kword.. your mind will thank you.
This thing is spreading fast.. 58000 hits on a single machine in such a short period of time, that is how many it got during the first DAY of code red.
Gotta toss a green-w32nimda out there like the code-green worm:)
Maybe you made some changes since March.. the particular problem I had was with blitting of pixels, the code with constructed the pixels from RGB data was incorrect.. but I found an example in the SDL documentation which suited the PowerPC fine.
If it works now, great.. I'll probably pickup a copy once I have the cash;)
I read a "sneak peak" of this book which John sent me as a PDF. It was good, and I'll probably buy a hard-copy. SDL has very fragmented and confusing documentation, this book shows some good examples of how to actually USE sdl for your applications.. which can be assisted by the official SDL documentation.
One major flaw of this book, as of the copy I recieved over 6months ago, is that all the examples assume the developer is using a little-endian processor. I do the majority of my programming on PowerPC and was sorely dismayed by this.
I was just thinking of installing AtheOS, and possibly doing some development for it. I don't know how AtheOS's graphics system is like, but I thought it would be an interesting task to allow it to use Xfree drivers ala solaris.
Also USB support and a PowerPC port would be neat as well. I would be willing to help on either, although I don't have much experience porting operating systems to PowerPC;)
Once I get myself a license to vmware, I'll probably take a serious look at doing some development on this.
I have heard of this Arab newstation before. I saw a story about it on american television, I forget which channel.. perhaps BBC-america.
The arab governments have fears that it may bring democracy.. well, not all of them. The newstation is located in Jordan. The prime-minister of Jordan, on this television documentary I watched admitted that the coming of democracy would be good and supported the efforts of this news station.
I can not see how their website was breaking American law, although they may have been breaking laws in other countries.. which shouldn't matter if it is hosted in the USA. The most the Arab countries should be able to do, imho, is to arrest the runners of this newstation.
Of course, the Arab government are afraid to do anything because they would be making martyrs of the procecuted.. I guess that is why they had the USA do the dirty work for them:(
This is the first direct sign that the USA is turning it's heels on democracy. This is the first time that the USA has tried to dissolve protesters cries of their corrupt, non-democratic government.
I am with a company which is rolling out wireless Internet access via 802.11b and was considering doing something like this. 802.11b sucks for security, but there are definately many protocols for ip that you can tunnel though.
Staples is the same way, the most they can do is that the manager can stand in front of the door refusing to move until the cops get there.. and hope he is assulted. Great system:)

I just bought the new Bob Dylan album on Vinyl.. it was on the Columnia/Sony label.
OpenAL is not dead, as it seems many believe.. but it is very stable :) There isn't much one can do to it now, other then bugfixes..
SDL sound sucks, thats why OpenAL was written. all of Loki's sdl based games use OpenAL.
>Cuz after all, they're just kids playin with the

And you want to put them in prison for life, shame on you.

That is the code green worm. It is a nice little worm that patches your codered-vulnerable box :)
Actually reading the article, you can see that the G5 will be a 64bit chip.. with a 32bit compatability mode of course.
I am pretty sure that the G4's (not the ones in use by apple, however) come in 64bit flavor, I would assume the G5 would follow in the G4's footsteps.
:)
And yes, I'm aware that the 128bit Altivec processing unit does not constitute calling the G4/G5 a 128 or 64bit processor
Maybe you made some changes since March.. the particular problem I had was with blitting of pixels, the code with constructed the pixels from RGB data was incorrect.. but I found an example in the SDL documentation which suited the PowerPC fine.

That would be (0x2b || !0x2b) or (toB || !toB)..
Variables cannot start with numbers, and | is a bitwise OR operation.. which is OK but you probably wouldn't want that in this example.
