There's a fair amount of discussion regarding this type of network use within Internet2. Fine Arts schools and departments have really become much more interested in internet technology to do things like online jam sessions, master classes, etc. using live, high definition video feeds with low latency. The ability to really do this stuff well online is potentially not far off, even for the standard Internet, if politics and corporate interests don't get in the way too much.

    Basically their process is:
All non-bittorrent p2p traffic == illegal, so block it
They claim to stop only illegal bittorrent, without looking at content, so I'm guessing they have a list of known 'legit' BT trackers (bittorrent.com, linux distros, etc.) and whitelist those, everything else is illegal. Their 'no false-positive' claim is easy when you just define everything you block as bad.

It's pretty lame technology, they've been hard-selling my University over the last month or so, primarily contacting me, but also cold-calling administrators and even our lawyers. When the lawyers lead off with jokes about a tech product, especially with all the crap we're dealing with in this area, you know it's a bad product.

There is a difference here, as noted. However, the letters asking to forward the notices to the students included a request to preserve information should associated lawsuits (with discovery court orders) follow. In general, UNL complies with reasonable requests (usually from law enforcement who sometimes have delays in getting court orders signed) to retain this type of information, but generally the officer requesting the information even asks if there are any significant costs involved. The other side of this is that the University may be treating this as a Public Records Request, which in Nebraska also allows for reimbursement, including an up-front deposit if the amount is significant. This could be an interesting lawyer battle.

I agree for BS degrees. The practical difference for going out into the working world is minimal. When and if you start looking for advanced degrees, particularly if you want to get into research, then it makes sense to look at the more prestigous schools. I know of a number of respected researchers who have undergrad degrees from decent (but not particularly big-name) CS departments, or even undergrad degrees in unrelated fields, then went on and got high-profile PhD's.

Of course, if it were a situation where you felt like you weren't learning enough, it might be a good time to look elsewhere, but that doesn't appear to be the problem in the original posting.

In a hotel room you pay to have a 'reasonable expectation of privacy', whereas in a theatre, where you pay to sit in a large open room with a couple hundred people that you don't know, you have no such protection.

My '02 Acura RSX pretty consistently is above it's rating, even though I tend to drive it relatively agressively. On a long road trip a couple of summers ago I got about 8 mpg over the highway rating on consecutive tanks of gas.
