This effort on the part of the Aussies makes about as much sense as current legislative efforts by the Utah State government, and will most likely fall on it's face even harder. Big waste of Australian taxpayer money.

Stupid legislation, stupid idea, waste of taxpayer money. If they want to spend that same taxpayer money wisely then they should spend it on an awareness-raising campaign aimed at parents to get them to pay attention to what their kids are doing instead of expecting the internet, the TV, and the State to raise them, damnit.

  3. My take on this on What Will Come of the FCC Comcast Hearing · · Score: 1

Much like the sprawl of many major metropolitan areas that weren't carefully thought and planned out decades in advance, I fear that the FCC's involvement in the greater issue of Net Neutrality, and in the more immediate issue of Comcast and it's ilk playing favorites when it comes to how it's customers choose to utilize their paid-in-advance bandwidth, is too little and too late. The big telecoms have had those decades to build up mass and velocity, and the FCC just doesn't have the delta-v to control their trajectory in truly meaningful ways. This is not to say (to continue the metaphor) that the FCC can't resort to weapons of mass destruction in a drastic and dramatic effort to force a change in course (or to fragment the target(s), if you take my meaning), but while that may prove both necessary and effective, it also runs the risk of turning into a negative-sum game for all in the end -- the consumer not being the least of the participants.

IMHO broadband providers either have their heads in the sand, or they're just trying to delay the inevitable. In surveys I've read the United States is far from being the world leader in broadband internet connectivity in speed, price, availability, or even customer service -- and I think they all know that as well as anyone else does, too. P2P isn't going away anytime soon; as we speak developers are working on ways to rewrite the bittorrent protocol to get around the DDoS attacks that companies like Comcast are using to hamstring it's users. Beyond that, the reality is that we live in a country where more and more people are using the Internet for surfing, gaming, telephone, email, downloading (completely legal, paid-for) movies, and in some cases for live-streaming content; bandwidth demands aren't going to ever go down, they're only ever going to go up, and they (ISPs) damn well know that too. Perhaps this is just their first volleys in a war they want to start, with their preferred end-result being tiered pricing based on monthly bandwidth usage, but again I say they must have their heads in the sand because nobody is going to sit still for that, either.

What about people who legitimately download movies through services like Netflix and Amazon Unbox? Are they in the 5% too? How long before they're MORE than just 5%? How long after Comcast starts assraping legitimate customers downloading legitimate content that they paid for, before those customers tell Comcast to go pound sand? I was born here in California and have lived here all my life. Never been out of the country even once, barely even been out of the state, either. Next month I'll be 43 years old. When I was a kid, sure, there were things going on that weren't too cool, but there were still things to be proud about the country I was born and raised in. I can't say that anymore. I love my country, still, especially living in California, but I'm ashamed of my government and the things it's doing and allowing to be done, and even the mere MENTION of things like this, true or not, make me feel weary down to my very bones. I don't care to see it all destroyed, but it needs to be FIXED, and it needs to be fixed NOW before these bastards make it all come crashing down around our ears.
