There is a huge amount of server-side application and server code written in Java. Consider all the Java application servers available on the market (e.g. from IBM, Oracle, Red Hat, etc.) in addition to more lightweight servlet containers (e.g. like Apache Tomcat). There's also a huge community around Spring. Java is not dead. Even if all new development on Java stopped now the existing code-base would keep Java relevant for years.
Variety is the spice of life. Some of the most productive programmers I know were simply doing it because it was a "good" career. Passion and excitement are not pre-requisites for recognizing and pursuing excellence.
IMHO, the key phrase here is, "...if your co-workers are for the most part in an office..." This isn't a big deal at all at my employer where > 50% of my team/department telecommutes. At that point, it becomes part of the corporate culture, and there is infrastructure and expectations to support the distributed work-force.
When I try to type "/" (to start Firefox's vi-like quick find feature) it puts the "/" in the search box and won't allow the search to function normally. Unforunate.
You must work for the same company that I work for. Not too many businesses in Central Arkansas need that fat of a pipe between Conway and Little Rock. I'm glad to know there are other Slashdotters working here.
Is it just me or were you guys reminded of a terrible, yet famous, girl band from a few years ago? Perhaps this new member was all they need to get back together.
I really don't feel anything can save old school mags. Well done web sites just offer too much interactivity and productivity to be bested by paper mags. Not to mention they are much more up to date.

Re: Allows calling via 3G and WiFi.
This was already available via the Google Voice app. It even has integration with the phone app to be the default method to make calls.
Surely you're not suggesting that Balmer is responsible for the recession?!

Shouldn't that be "Implementing" and not "Implementating" in the subject line?

I think the Tom Cruise movie you are thinking of is "Top Gun", not "Top Dog." No big deal, but might throw some people off.
Check out http://www.unicomplabs.com/spacesaving/cappuccinop c.asp for a closer look at a similar product. All the text is in English too.
