I was hammered writting coding exams while at school. I don't think I ever recieved lower then 80% on a coding assignment. I probably averaged 90-95% on assignments and on group projects I was always near the top of the class. However I'd write the two midterms, and then the final and I'd barely pass the course. I found the only way to get through the courses was to do amazing on the assignments and then get what I could on the tests. In 4th year most of the courses had projects and not exams. I did great there, my best year GPA wise was the last year that should have been the hardest. I never did figure out a way to do better on the tests.
Tonight I went out and rented some DVD's I had been meaning to see for awhile now. I only got a DVD player last month and I love the format. The ability to jump chapter to chapter, the menus, the special features everything is so much nicer then the old VCR. When I finish the movie I pop it out and thats it, no need to rewind. I will not give up these features of the DVD just to get a better picture. Hell my TV is crap just like 99% of the market out there. I can't even use the full resolution coming off of the DVD.
I doubt anyone other then audiophiles will be interested in the new system. Even if it was the same price as a DVD player and DVD's, it just is too expensive to upgrade a system every couple of years. If they try to force me to upgrade I will simply move my entire library into a digital format on a big file server. All protection will eventually be broke and I'm not going to be forced into a standard I don't want. Keep DVD's around and I will continue to rent and buy them as I see fit.
I've done this but not exactly as you ask. First I rip the DVD to the HD using a program called SmartRipper
Then I play back the DVD's complete with working menus by using Power DVD Pro 4.0. It's capable of loading the movie off of the harddrive. Additional ways to play the ripped movie is covered on the webpage.
Output to the tv is handled by my Matrox G400 dualhead. I actually watch on the PC though as my monitor is larger then the TV. Sound is through my SB live value which I dump though the stereo-out to my VCR and into my reciever. Really it's all hacked together but I can't complain I needed most of the components anyways. A few more cables and it all worked out.
The software used is all run under Win2k and the PC is a P3 450 with 256meg and a 60 gig HD. BTW 2 movies I have on there currently are GhostWorld and Metropolis(Disk1). Right there you can kiss 22 gigs of HD space away. But it is nice to have instant loading of the menus, and the removal of region codes. In a couple of years this may be more useful but currently HD space costs double that of buying the DVD on average. I did it mostly to see if It could be done.
I'd also like to recommend buffy the vampire slayer and its spin off angel. This season has just ended and next season is probably the last but it should be a great one. The story so far has been told in two arcs that tie together to make a season. Both arcs are present to some degree through out the season but are weighted differently depending on the episode. For example this season on buffy the arcs are Buffy's rebirth and the geek trio. Pretty typical for A Joss Whedon series is deal with personal problems then deal with the bad guy.
The character development on the show is usually subtle. Like in the real world people usually change slowly, however there are those moments that everything gets messed up and people are never the same after words. I rarely notice how the people are different from when they started till I go back and watch the early seasons on tape. It's shocking to see the progress made it 6 years.
The second season is due out on DVD in mid June I recommend you head out and rent it. Just watch the first few episodes. If you can stop after 5 your stronger then I was. I became hooked while in the middle of the hardest year I had at university. I still found a way to watch the rest of the season and haven't missed an episode since. Hell at this point I pay $60/month for my digital cable and All I use it for is to watch buffy/angel at the earliest possible time and maybe watch some football and rally racing if I'm bored. I still consider $60/month for buffy a steal.
