  1. Re:Wikipedia's policies are insane on Wikipedia Losing Contributors, Says Wales · · Score: 3, Informative

Wikipedia needs to amend its "Notability" and "Verifiability" policies badly, and stop deleting articles (which blocks access to the edit history). They don't accept evidence as verification, only "published sources" which use inaccurate speculation and second-hand information. Misinformation keeps reappearing on pages, because it has a citation to some other website which makes the claim, despite that it is untrue.

An example of a time I was highly frustrated is when I was trying to read about the software program called Impulse Tracker, then discovered that its page was deleted. So what if Impulse Tracker is "not notable", its file format is still used in the tracking scene, so I wanted to read about the original program, but can't because the page was deleted. And if I want to reconstruct the page, I can't because the edit history is blocked out.

Another example is the history of PSP homebrew. Anyone that knows anything about the timeline and the releases by nem (hello, world for FW 1.00), the ps2dev toolchain, the Swaploit and K-Xploit tools by PsP-Dev (which most definitely did not involve any "cracked code" from Sony) and Sony's firmware Japanese release dates knows that this Wikipedia article is definitely incorrect. For the exact same reason: anything that is printed-but-nonsense trumps not-printed-but-true. The sad thing is that a couple decades from now the Wikipedia version will live, but the actual history has long been forgotten: "History is written by the victors" is now "History is written by Wikipedia's clique of editors".

  2. Auto-tagging on Germany Says Facebook's Facial Recognition Is Illegal · · Score: 1

As I understand it, it's not so much the facial recognition itself as the auto-tagging that is the perceived problem. This is easily fixed by Facebook: make this one of the privacy options, and default it to "no". In that case you have to opt-in, which means informed consent.

  4. Re:Why should one's religion allow one to break la on Idle: File-Sharing Is Not a Religion, Says Swedish Government · · Score: 2

This happens all the time laws will have exceptions (like slaugher cannot cause unnecessary suffering, except...) and also other rules. Sometimes a classroom can be half-filled with students with something on their head, but little Johnny is warned to take off his baseball cap. The trick to this is that "freedom of religion" trumps most other laws. Kopimism sounds like very interesting as a religion... once there are enough followers, the government has no choice but to recognize it.

  5. Re:It wasn't released in the 80s. on Space Invaders: The Movie · · Score: 2

Space Invaders was released in 1978. It was old hat by the time 1980 rolled around. There were a few squeals released in the 80s though. Space Invaders Part II and Return of the Invaders come to mind.

Though not sequels, Space Invaders was made old with the release of Galaxian (space invaders with up to a squadron of 3 dive-bombing aliens), which in turn was uprooted by Galaga (Galaxian but now the flying around was the main thing).

Why is this modded Funny? It's the goddamn Truth! Listen to Metropolitan.Orchestra-Medley.overture.(1900).-.LoC.mp3 - this is a recording from October 10th, 1900 (over 110 years ago). So you'd think it would be in the public domain, right? Bzzzt.

    Rights & Access

This recording is protected by state copyright laws in the United States. The Library of Congress has obtained a license from rights holders to offer it as streamed audio only. Downloading is not permitted. The authorization of rights holders of the recording is required in order to obtain a copy of the recording. Contact jukebox@loc.gov for more information.

The funny part is that you didn't own that record, according the label it was leased to you for the purpose of producing sound directly from the record. And that was the state of the nation in the year 1900 A.D.
