  1. They SAY they have 17 sources, but all are conveniently anonymous. The only expert that was named says he was mis-quoted.

Given the amount of doubt and multiple publioc challenges, you'd think that if they have anything to prove any of this, even to a preponderance of the evidence, they'd cough it up.

Homo Sapiens were planted here by grey aliens from Sirius. I have proof but God told me not to publish that yet. Care for a nice refreshing cup of Cool Aid?

  2. But mysteriously, they haven't shown the photos to their readers.

  3. Personally, I've had more mysterious problems with HP than Supermicro.

  4. My experience is very different. I find that Supermicro is quite reliable, at least when running Linux.

They don't seem to be too picky about environment or power. (within reason)

Of course, I don't get the bargain basement model or run Windows, so that may be a different story.

Yes, we should. But since the bosses seem unwilling and even think it is to their advantage when people overwork (in spite of ample evidence to the contrary that a real professional would consider), it may take a feedback system that involves having to pay people more for overtime, salaried or not.

It brings to mind a related point, why do businesses think Master of BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION makes someone a good manager? Surely, a manager should have some specialization in managing PEOPLE. That would include coursework where they would have drilled into their heads that any gains for overtime are short lived and ultimately result in a net loss of productivity. The studies are there, it's not just an opinion at this point.

True. There is a learning curve to that and it generally involves learning to see the earliest signs or simply adopting a discipline that avoids the issue entirely.

As a creator, it is your professional duty to understand the harmful effects of working excessive hours and avoid them. No, you're not Superman or some other sort of genetic freak. You are just one of many people who routinely fools themselves.

Ask yourself this: Your boss happily "lets" you work in a creative frenzy for as long as you will, but what happens when you need a month to recharge after, is he still in your corner giving you what you need or does everything you created become yesterday's news?

If your employers only include quality if their employees add it for free, then they don't have any pride in the product and they'll find a way to turn it into a steaming pile as soon as that lets them squeeze out an extra dime of profit. That includes canning you and hiring cheaper labor at first opportunity.

For that matter, any job where you drive home after work can lead to fatigue induced fatalities for the employee and bystanders.

The copper legislation comes in later. This suggests that we need better readiness to recover from disaster in general.

However, since backhaul lines are generally buried, I do wonder why they would be down. In AT&T's case, they use satellite backhaul for the flying COWs because they want them to be useful in any situation. They also use them for non-emergency special events to provide adequate coverage where the backhaul lines are likely at planned capacity already..

Not so bad. Go get a cheapo AT&T go phone an use that until the verizon service comes back after suffering extensive damage from a Cat4-only-missed-becoming-Cat5-by-2mph-winds-hurricane that hit just last week!

That has GOT to be the most clueless comment yet in this story! Where do you think they're going to go to get this Go phone? They're in the middle of a disaster area. The roads are closed. The power is down. They can't get food and water and you think they can just pop down to the mobile shop and pick up a new phone? AT&T's equipment went through the very same storm. It's just that AT&T was prepared and they have gone in as far as they could into the disaster area and sent up drones with tower equipment on them to provide service in the affected area so that people could let their families know they weren't dead and perhaps get some idea about when help might come.

And Verizon's response? They are magnanimously not billing for service they're not providing.
