So the purpose of the media is to punish MS for what they did at some point by exaggerating the flaws in their current products and not to help readers choose the best product for them by giving fair information about all competitors?

That's true. Also a lot are choosing the WP marketplace because it makes the apps more discoverable and because WP users are more likely to pay for apps. I guess it is different point of view and not directly comparable. There are multiple reports of devs doing better on the WP marketplace than on Android or the Apple App Store. I guess it all depends on what niche they hit.

I am ready to bet a finger that .NET will be supported on at least equal ground (access to the same APIs) with C++. Also MS has said publicly that every current app will work on WP8.

From the reports it is not clear how the current apps will be supported except that they will work. It is reasonable to assume that developers will be able to change and redeploy the code but it is not known if the APIs will be unified and if new APIs will be usable in the old apps. Of course any .NET code that the is pure logic will work everywhere. The XAML code is tricky because it depends on the sets of controls that they will choose to make available

The final version of the SDK will only work with Kinect for Windows hardware (meanwhile the Beta version license will be extended by 3 years and will continue to work with normal Kinect). Kinect for Windows will feature Near Mode as well.

If you want officially supported SDK you need Kinect for Windows. That's the deal.

Of course they are not, neither do they claim to compare the entire pool of cell phone purchasers. They compare reviews by people who wrote reviews. At this point WP users are mainly WP enthusiasts and they are really excited about the platform. As such they are more likely to write a review and their reviews are more likely to be favorable. This is a measure that should be taken for what is - a customer satisfaction, not popularity of the platform, not some kind of grade on the OS. The only thing it means is that WP7 buyers are not disappointed.

  17. Re:Yah on Microsoft Scraps 'Where's My Phone Update?' Site · · Score: 2

You do realize that WP7 is entirely new OS unrelated to Windows Mobile, don't you? It even has different name. Up to now every phone released can run and in fact is running the latest version of the OS (except for the bugfix update that was released last week)

  18. Re:Disappointment on Microsoft Scraps 'Where's My Phone Update?' Site · · Score: 3, Insightful

I have a Windows Phone and I will rate it pretty high. What is your point? Even if I am the only person in the world who owns Windows Phone that will still make the average rating pretty high. It will not mean that a lot of devices were sold, it will not mean that it is better than Android or iPhone. It will only mean that the average satisfaction of people who have WP7 is pretty high. Of course Amazon probably has some minimum number of reviews needed to rank the phone but I imagine this number is something like 20 and surely MS managed to sell 20 phones.

Well you can hardly compare the situation in Android with that in WP7. When Google released ICS it took 3 months for any old phone to get an upgrade, some will never get an upgrade and some will get wait more than 6 months. By contrast it took less than 3 months for each and every WP7 device in the world to get the Mango - the most important WP7 update.

I am pretty sure Xbox made all those billions back and is considered a success. I can't remember where I read that but it was in some of the 10th anniversary articles.

Now you may be right that investors and Nokia do not want to wait another 10 years but
    1. It was neither Microsoft nor Windows Phone that got Nokia into financial and market trouble. Nokia did want a big gamble because a small gamble would not do it.
    2. If Nokia went for Android no one would give them a billion in cash and give them any advantage on the Android platform.

You may be right that Nokia and Windows Phone will fail but in my opinion (and in Nokia's opinion) the chance to fail with Android was higher.

And why should Microsoft drop the platform? They already spent money to develop it and to pay to Nokia. The costs to continue to develop and market it are not that high. In fact I believe that the money they make from Android can pay for the continued development of Windows Phone.

I don't think that anyone expects Windows Phone to sell anywhere near Android or iPhone. They should not expect to sell even half of the iPhone numbers in the next 5 years. MS should go into Windows Phone with a strategy similar to Xbox which is "lose billions and after ~10 years we will be profitable and on the top"
