  1. learning company-robot game on Learning Java Through Violence · · Score: 1

The learning company had a cool game out that you had to put different gates together to make robots to complete quests. It was non violent. Very fun! I'm not sure why they don't sell it anymore. I wish I could get a copy for my neices and nephews.
anyone know what happened to this game??

  2. why this belongs on slashdot on 13-Year-Old Suspended For Hacking Commits Suicide · · Score: 1

Not every article posted on slashdot is interesting to all the nerds. While we are involved in tech in some part of our lives... tech is a broad topic. so it is silly to whine about how it doesn't fit YOUR definition of what should be on /. with over 600 comments it looks like it is newsworthy to some of the nerd community.

I like these type of articles. While I somehow survived my teen years as a lone geek in high school (yes, suicide crossed my mind once or twice). I'm interested in the issues that face the young geeks today. I'm now a mom to two kids who were on the computer before their first birthday. What can i do to make sure they survive the trials of being a geek. I don't want to make the mistake this kid's dad made.

Let me just add my voice to the people who say I do. I'm blessed to live in an area where I get 4 pbs channels in the local area, and pbsyou on the cable. I have 2 kids under 5. I haven't found the same quality of kids shows on any other channel. Nick has Blue's Clues... but other than that, pbs is the only channel the kids get.
Between the lions is helping my 4 year old to learn to read. Sesame Street taught many kids their ABC,123...I think one of the documentary channels (biography??) had a show on why Sesame street was created.(too many kids getting to school age without knowing the basics). With more and more families with two parents working... I think these learning programs are needed. The other channels just don't have the programs. Wishbone is another cool show. It has inspired me to go back and read some of the classics...And the college classes... I'm working on spanish in my spare time. Not to mention the non-educational, british shows that I enjoy (Red Dwarf, Bean, Dr. Who...).

The whole point to this rambling is while you may not personally find something on pbs to your liking... an investment in the next generation is worth it. We all have a kid in the family (cousin, or neice or nephew) who is benefiting from these shows.

One problem I see is people complaining about the age discrimination and long hours... but not willing to take a good job with good hours for slightly less pay. As a university admin, I love my job, and I can't understand why we don't get many applicants for sysadmin jobs.
While it is true I could make more outside the edu environment, it is important to me to be able to have time to enjoy my family. Have a say in my job direction and get cool toys to play with, within a low pressure environment.

  8. Why I like ORBS. on MAPS vs. ORBS · · Score: 1

I personally don't use ORBS or MAPS to block mail to my systems... we make our own list to block.

What I do like about orbs is that i get the site report. I usually find that if someone has a system with an open email relay...that it usually has some more serious security problems with the box. I don't have the time/manpower to hunt these down myself. I like the list I get so I know which machines to concentrate on.

It works well for my environment where i don't have control over all the boxes, but would like to focus the manpower on keeping the network/machines as secure as possible.

  9. Re:Oh please... on Gaming Magazine Ads: Failing the Female Market · · Score: 1

Just because women deal with the fact that the gaming ads are full of scantily clad women, doesn't mean it is a good idea... just means women deal with it because that is the way it is... if you want to read the articles in the magazine, you want to find out the best hints to play a game or find out which new games are hot or which ones not to waste your money on, you read the magazines... and maybe women haven't been that vocal about how annoying it is to have uncreative and annoying ads, but that still doesn't make it a good thing. Just because it the accepted way to market a game at this point in history, doesn't mean it shouldn't be discussed and possibly changed in the future.

Just for reference I'm a female who plays the games... and the gaming magazine sub is in my name.. and my husband and i fight over who gets to read it first. I hate the demeaning ads... but i ignore them... but truthfully I'd rather I didn't have to, as I don't feel comfortable letting my little girl see it.

  10. not enough geek girls for the geek guys ? on Salon on Geeks and Sex · · Score: 2

Personally, I had to marry a geek, as non-geeks just didn't understand when i got an "a-ha" and had to get up and fix my code at 2am. Who else is going to understand your long hours at work but another geek? or how even after a long day at work staring at a computer how you play/code computer games to unwind?? I also agree with an earlier post about how a good relationship takes effort. I found that with a geek-geek relationship at least the some of the communication could go via email or mud so even though we were apart we could keep in touch. so I think the big problem is the shortage of geek girls.
