  8. Irrelevant on NT Beats Linux in Round 2 · · Score: 0
    You're mostly missing the point.

NT can be 4x or even 6x faster than Linux. I'd still use Linux. If speed was THAT much of an issue, then I'd use Sun/Solaris. Sorry, but I have never, nor will I ever - use NT for anything, especially mission critical.

The only time I'd use NT (and do) is to run Windows-only apps that I need from time to time. Quite honestly, the only reason I boot NT anymore is for 3D Studio Max, Painter and CD-R software - and even that - I can't tell you when the last time that was. I'd much rather use my SGI/Sun at that point with their native tools.

I'm not trying to bash NT here - just putting things in perspective. Great - Linux may not be THAT fast. It's still more RELIABLE. Better to have a slow site than a dead one, thank you.

Someone mentioned LAN vs. WAN. Sure, speed becomes an issue on a LAN, where 10/100Mbit Ethernet is faster than the T1s... But who the hell has millions of hits on their LAN?!

As for the quantitative analysis, I commend the author. He didn't bash NT at all and showed the numbers. Excellent advocacy, and something more people should consider.

Lastly, for what it's worth, NT could be 4x or even 6x as fast as NT. I'm still using Linux. If speed becomes THAT critical - I'll use Sun/Solaris. NT can bite me. Oh wait. It has. 'Nuf said.

Why can't they just use series numbers, or meaningful names with numbers - Microsoft too. I'd much rather have a "v3.0" than a "99" - it actually means something that way. If you're going to use something idiotic like "Windows98" than at least use "Windows98.1.4" ;>
