The MPAA is well-aware that once the player gets out, piracy will be completely out of control
What? I hate to tell you this, but with some interesting modifications you can get a copy of DVD in mpeg-2 content using a licensed DVD player in Windows. There are utilities that you can download for Windows that are specifically for taking advantage of some of the players to get a copy of the content. Are you telling me that with these things already out there that DeCSS is going to destroy the movie industry? Hell no! First off, people who buy the pirated versions probably weren't going to buy the damn thing in the frist place. You lose no money from people who were never going to buy (this is my argument for why estimates on damage from software piracy are bunk as well). I am so sick of this. Yes, you can get a copy of a DVD and use it to distribute illegally using deCSS. You can do the same things with stuff in Windows. With these tools already out, for much longer then deCSS was out may I add, deCSS adds nothing to the picture. Molog
Of course I'm the guy who thinks NASA should have a Lottery, drawn yearly, for a free 7 day trip into space. Providing the winner can meet minimum training requirments. If they can't, just give them 10% of the 'pot'. Also give people the option to choose between space and the cash. A 20 min space walk would be a nice touch as well
Hell yah! I never play the lottery becuase I see it as a waist of money and time, but this is something worth buying a few tickets for! Who doesn't want to go into orbit? Molog
Hmm, I really don't think it even costs them that much. The average cost in the stores is what? $200? I would suspect that the stores bought it for around $140 - $150, the distributor paid around $90 - $100, and that would lead me to believe that the hardware only costs Sega around $50. I could be wrong, if somone else has better info please reply because I'm going off of an educated guess. Molog
According to the article with a heafty cooling system and some modifications you can get it done. Granted that it is a royal pain in the butt by their own addmission but the fact is you can do it. Molog
I won't deny that FreeBSD is faster then the current Linux Kernels at networking. But with 2.4 not even being released yet how can you claim that BSD is still superior? Do you have any bench marks I can look at anywhere? I would do it myself but I only have one computer and repartitioning now would be a real pain in the ass. Molog

I don't think that was the issue he was brining up. Plus, most importantly the code that handles decryption will be closed and that is the most important part. No one really cares about anything else... Well ok, having a good interface to watch the movies is nice. To me the real issue is that this is not an open format and the MPAA gets to tell you how to use stuff you bought. Just a rant. Molog
Then Apple has doomed itself from ever getting Quicktime as the defacto standard across the board. MPEG will continue to proliferate simply becuase it is an open standard and anyone can make a viewer for it. Quicktime might give you better video for less size, which is great, but expecting someone to pay for them to make a viewer is not going to cut it in the Linux community where everyone ravenously supports open software and open standards. For any advantages that Quicktime offers it is only a matter of time before MPEG catches up and or surpasses it. Software patents suck. Molog
If I had a 500 MHz CPU with a 500 MHz bus and RAM that could be accessed at the speed of the processor, would this not kick the ass off the GHz systems that are out now? The bus and RAM have been lagging behind the processor wars, or so it seems to me. Maybe I'm not that informed or I just don't understand the technical issues behind everything but it appears to me that we don't nearly see the full performance that our processors could utilize. Molog
Well... I might say the Gecko looks like a very good piece of software, and since after reading the MPL it looks a lot like the LGPL you can use it for other stuff. The Mozilla browser is still too slow and prone to crashes. As much as I have great disdain for MS, IE on Windows is the best browser right now.
Mozilla is a world famous open source success.
Yes Mozilla is world famous, but is it a success? The first real version hasn't been released yet. I have downloaded the nightly builds this week and while it is looking good, it is still slow and has crashed on me (I have filed bug reports, yes). This can not be considered a success as it currently stands. Apache is a success. It makes up more than half of all web servers. Sendmail is a success. It can be argued that the Linux kernel is a success from the adoption it is seeing from base users to corporate not to mention its use as a server. Mozilla is practically still in its infancy. Molog
Will GNOME implement an API for installers to use. One thing that helps Windows is a common installer so that most software you put on your system is pretty easy to get on. You just click on the executable and then it installs. With GNOME's goal being to make a user-friendly system do you see this as part of that? Molog
True. They cannot set laws, tax you or have their own military.
Well they can not directly set laws, tax you. They can buy off politicians who can effectively do that, so the end result would be that they could. Military is a loose term. They actually could get a large group of security persons and essentially have a military. I'm not too sure this would happen though. In the human condition there is greed and people can be bought, I can, and because of this MS can control our government. Politicians whore themselves everyday. Molog
Ok, let's do it. I will help organize. Email me at epurvee at yahoo dot com. If people have more experience in this sort of event then I will leave the leadership to them but I will put in my time to help out. What we need to do first is get a group of us volunteers and work out the hierarchy of our responsibilities. Once that is done, we can decide on a date for the protest and work on other details. Let's do this. Molog
When ever we hear about these protests, it is always "Tomorrow, show your support!" or "One week from today, show your support!" Honestly that isn't enough time to prepare. I would love to take part in making our voices heard to the lawmakers, but 3 LUG's just isn't enough to even be noticed. We would need > 10k people to even get a headline. This is something that needs to be planned months in advance with everyone knowing about it, getting hotels reserved, or putting in the comp time at work or letting your boss know you need vacation those days. I'm sure that if we had a little time to organize that something could be put together. I would be willing to help with such a task if there was interest. Molog
It's not much unlike the GPL in that respect (the difference being that you can write proprietary software with Qt if you pay, and you can't do it at all with the GPL).
This is one of the reasons that I like the LGPL more then I like the GPL. My point was that if they want to make Qt a standard then it should be free for "everyone" to use. The BSD license is also good in this regard. I'm not really critizing them for charging money for it but it isn't what I would do. That's it basically. Molog
Yeah, I understand that Qt is their only product. I was sorta saying that I would have liked it better if they sold a development environment instead of just a library. On a side note, unless you are going for strick portability using Qt on Windows doesn't make since to me. It seems that it would serve only to port *nix apps over that used Qt. If I was developing an app for the Windows world, I would probably just use the Win32 API. It is native (buggy I know) and consistant with the M$ way of doing things. Is the Qt for Windows targeted at Unix developers who want a port? I don't see Windows developers using it. Molog
With QT now being a good solution for embeded Linux, it would make good sense to use QT for application portability. I like QT. It is object oriented and easy to program with. On the other hand, I'm not too keen on the way that it is marketed. With QT you can use it in open source software with no charge. If you are making propriatery software there is a big charge for it(well some people could compare it to other componets that cost more but I'm speaking from my point of view). I know it would be a nice world if everyone would write open source apps, but a lot of cool apps that would get written for Linux would only be brought over if there was a good open frame work. I think that the best way to go as far as development libraries go is to sell a development environment. Trolltech sells the library only AFAIK. It is for this reason that I support and use the GTK becuase it feels more open to me that everyone can use it. I'm sure I'll get flamed but I think that a development library should not have a cost becuase you are trying to make a standard. Just an opinion. Molog
One point I wanted to address is this one. It is a very valid point and a few reasons I see behind it. Pretty much you can make a GTK app look like a QT app. I know people can point out some glaring exceptions to this, but if one wanted to, it could easily be done(assuming the user would use themes that looked reasonably alike). Part of the problem is that people are using lots of different development tools. GNOME apps use GLADE to develop their user interface(well at least some developers use it) and KDE has Kdevelop. In windows there is pretty much a defacto development environment. The Visual suite. Pretty much using it you can put out consistant apps that work together. If you wanted to you could get arround it but pretty much the standard tools have helped the Windows world have their consistant apps. I don't know if this is achievable in the Linux world becuase if a tool was made that could work with any library and language I doubt that a majority of people would use it because everyone has their own favorite development tool. Some vi, some emacs while others use some of the GUI tools that are out there. Everyone is on different sides of a hexagonal fence that consistancy will most likely be a pipe dream. Is this a bad thing? For geeks, no. For people who want an easy to use solution probably. For good or ill this will probably be the reason why MS will stay in power of the desktop or a company like them.
Well I guess that Raster derserves most of the credit but I was pointing to enlightenment for the code that I am impressed with. Well to be honest, the result. I love E, even though it does hog the resources a little(ok a lot). So I concede the point that I know nothing of his programming expertese.
a) Mandrake Linux has been smoking RedHat saleswise so RedHat's owning the name means (almost) zilch
While Mandrake has a kick ass distro, I thought according to the figures in a zdnet story on linux distro sales (sorry I don't have the url, does anyone else?) That the sales of Redhat Linux made up 60% of all Linux related software sales. If I am wrong then I appologize. 1) Red Hat has no real products that they own aside from whatever they've stolen from Cygnus
RedHat Linux is a product that RedHat owns in name. You can not release a product and call it that. They aquired Cygnus, so maybe you could say stole, but Cygnus is now a part of RedHat in one form or another.
2) VA linux has no products other than arrogant programmers like Mandrake (smart move for a hardware company!)
VA Linux sells custom Linux servers and other machines. They are pretty good not only for Linux but freeBSD. That's a product. I haven't meet Mandrake so I can't say anything about his character but I know he has put out some awsome code.
As for you other comments I can't really say anything about. I have never used Caldera so I know nothing of their distro and while Slashdot has been anouncing some stuff, it is not nearly as dedicated to applications as freshmeat is. Molog
I don't really consider myself a troll, but if you say so. I honestly think that if their employer demonstrates the lack of ethics and fairness that is seen in AOL/Time-Warner then they should leave that company. Molog
Again sorry to everyone else. Just answer me this question. If Jesus physically walked the earth today, would He speak out against the morals of our age (remember the days He here were much worse then these) or would he speak out against the church? I think it would be the church. After all people curse the name of God becuase of the actions of so called Christians. The church has choosen some stupid battles in the past and present. I think you could agree with me on that. I consider myself a Christian but I think we should live by example, not by condemnation. Be a light to the world, not a resounding gong. Molog
Dear God! It wasn't a troll... What has this world come to.
Because on the Internet you have the ability to shut these sites down by contacting their ISP or whatever, and if you don't like them, then don't go and look at them. Using Gnutella these kinds of materials will be stored across an ever-changing distributed network and will be almost impossible to trace or eradicate.
So if you don't like the stuff you will shut it down? Pretty much on the internet you find what you look for. I am not into censorship. While we might hate some of the stuff that is out there we have the right to not view it. In your earlier post you stated that you saw anti-christian bigotry so I will assume you are a Christian. I am myself but taking a stand like this will only trivialize your faith. Jesus would not have spoken out against the evil doers. You are working for an evil company who seeks to destroy everything that is good and free(as in freedom and beer). With a flourishing market using the excuse that you have to pay the bills doesn't cut it. Take a moral stand and say f*** you to your employer and leave. I am sure there are many people here on slashdot that could tell you where some good jobs are opening up. I'm sick of the bullying tactics used by these companies. Remember that Time Warner is part of the MPAA. I leave the rest to you. Molog
