  1. My Patent Idea on Enter The 'Stupid Patent Tricks' Contest · · Score: 1

The rapid-fire mouse ball changer/co-worker annoyer.

Here it is. We all know that mouse balls get worn out after time. Imagine this. You're sitting there in your cube, and you realize your mouse ball is worn out. You flip up the saftey cover (for OSHA compliance) take aim at your PHB and press the button. The worn out mouse ball is discarded at a fairly high rate of speed while another is loaded into the chamber for immediate continuation of reading /., userfriendly or what not. This ejected mouse ball continues on it's path, at a decent rate of speed, and if your aim was good enough, thunking your boss in the back of the head.

This really makes me wonder how much a small little island costs and what it would take for me to just up and move there. I think I through this idea out a few months ago, but I'm to lazy to go looking for the link. I wonder what's next on the "Stupid Government Ideas" list.

  5. FPS and the X-Files on X-Files FPS Episode · · Score: 1

I'll admit it, I watched just to see if I could see Scully in a skimpy leather outfit. Sorry, I have a thing for her.

But it's leading me to wonder what's going on over @ Fox. Did anyone see the episode a week before done in a "Cops" format? Now that was cheesy.

The the missus and I did have a interesting conversation after the show. Me being an avid gamer, not so much FPS, she asked why do I enjoy playing these games when they do nothing but contribute to a persons violent urges. I said not really. Most people who play FPS or any other type of game realize it's not real and that using a rocket launcher to frag your friend to lil itty bitty bits is, in most cases, not a good thing to do. But there are some people who will and do take it a step to far. I mean, if you look at almost anything in our society, there will be a small group of people who will take it to far, whether it be the idea, or the actually action itself.
Then she brought out the dead horse question: "Well what about Columbine?" To which I replied "Well where were the parents?"
But she seemed to think that all games are FPS and frag fests. To show her that that was a false generalization, I logged on and jumped to an Unreal server. She started going on about how bad it was that all there was to the game was frag frag frag. Then I logged onto a Rainbow Six server and found a friend of mine and we did a few co-op missions. From there we went to Gamestorm.com and dropped into MultiPlayer BattleTech: Solaris. From there I took her to a C&C:TS server. ALl of this to show here that not all games are frag frag frag. And what she got out of it, which I was hoping she would catch, is that it's just not teens playing these games, but a lot of adults as well, many well educated with good jobs.

I think it's starting to dawn on her that she's been a victim of media hype ;)

  6. I actually do play a female.. on Men Playing as Women · · Score: 1

But I generally do it in games where fragging isn't the only part of the game. I tend to Role Play a female. The major reason is I'm an evil person and I love to watch the reactions of male players as I let them hit on me for a day or so, and then tell them I'm actually a male. That's always good for a laugh. Another reason is that I just enjoy role playing in a gaming environment. I enjoy hanging up my "self" and acting out the life of another person who is for the most part totally different than I am. It a stress relief for me. Yes I know that I'm just ducking reality. But I think we all indulge in some sort of escapism, be it the movies, fraggin, reading a book or what not. I just choose to fsck up other peoples escapism when I practice mine.

  7. I hate the ergonomic keyboards... on Ergonomic Keyboards · · Score: 1

I really do. Most of the reason is because I never learned to type correctly, so my reaches are all messed up. So the split just kills me. I prefer the older non windoze 9x keyboards, and if you want to get specific, the compaq keyboards. They keys are just right for me, and I find that the way the space them has really increased my ability to circle strafe. That's the other thing with the ergo keyboards, it kills my circle strafe. But unlike Cmdr. Taco, I don't type for hours at a time. I'm a networking geek, so most of my typing is in short burst of command line phrases and moving around with my arrow keys.

I generally leave closer to 5 or so. A quick stop @ a small company I do side work for for about 2-3 hours, and then online working as a sys op for gamestorm for about 3 hours and that puts me right around the 15 hour mark. to purchase a used laptop, generally a low end pentium machine. Yeah, I'm not gonna frag on it, but for sending/recieving email, and transmitting alot of the reports I need to, it works well.

As I travel across the midwest and East coast, I found ATT worldnet service works quite well. Case in point, one of my stays was in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl, and I had worked at a dance club in Philly, well this club is a chain, and they had one, as luck would have it, next to my hotel room. After a quick trip to radio shack, I broke out the laptop, dialed into the internet, and hit tucows.com. At the time, I was running a Thinkpad 770ed. So I grabbed some audio recording software, and proceeded to record about 45 hours of live dance mix from the dj. The wav file was about 2 gigs, but it was awesome stuff.

I've also found that most of the bigger hotels, holiday inns, sheratons, marriots etc have phone ports in their phones, bring your own phone line tho.

ATT can set you up for about 10 usd per month. Just give them a credit card and a po box, should do the trick. Sneaky yes, but hey, sometimes you just need to get the job done.

I think I was lucky. I had a person who was kind enough, and patient enough to sit down with me and show me some of the basics of Linux. Then I started fumbling around myself, learning what to do and what not to do. But when I do get stuck, and the man's, faq's etc fail me, he's also kind enough to let me call upon him to help out.

Ok here's my ideal candidate - and I know I'm gonna catch hell for this but:

Dr. Eric Schmidt, CEO of Novell.
Putting aside his career at Sun, let's just look at what he's done for Novell:

Took a company that almost everyone wrote off for dead (their stock was trading at about 7 USD a share in Mid 97)and pulled what could be one of the biggest turn arounds of the decade. He straightened out Ray Norda's mess, got the company out of finacial trouble (today Novell was trading around 33 3/8 USD), but managed to get new products out, redesign company focus, and now (some say) he is ready to grab the Directory war away from MS with NDS. all this in 2 years? I would love to see him run the country.

    But I could be nuts.
