Oh no, I'm culturaly isolated!

I'm the most culturally isolated person at my place of work, but I am by far the most technicaly savy. For the most part this is because I am the only tech here (a department of one). I don't need to know any of the intrigue and politicking going on, or the details of jobs and contracts. All I need to know is what's not working and when to setup machines for new employees. Otherwise I go hermit mode in my office or the server room. I don't mind, they don't mind, and we are all happy.
There is also the fact that the male to female ratio here is about 1:10. Most of the watercooler discussions are of no interest to me and can easily move into territory I don't want to go to.
Exactly what we wanted, assuming we want only the most popular songs and wish to pay exorbient fees. These guys need to wake up, I'll gladly pay a monthly fee to a record company for access to their entire cataloug. I don't want just the hit of the day, I want those old delta blues tracks that haven't been released in decades, some cool pre-war european jazz, and a lot of out of print LA punk.
As usual it is a matter of control and short-sightedness. The record corps figure that the old stuff that just a few people want can't generate enough revenue to make having it available worthwhile. And they are right when you look at current distribution models, but on the net they can offer a subscription service where that old Skip James tune just takes up a few megabytes on a server and doesn't require pressing, shipping, etc. That way they make money from the millions of vapid Britteny Spears fans as well as the fans of older/obscure artists. Hey RIAA, that is more money, not less.
It strips the crap from the engines it searches and gives you results from the 'portal' types (like Yahoo) as well as the 'pure' search engines like Google.
The only thing I use Yahoo for is their TV listings.
Many of Jon Katz's articles are also carried by The Freedom Forum. A list of his articles is here and the 'Katz-alert listserver' can be joined by mailing katzlist-join@listserver.fac.org.
Yep, that is a horrible misquote. Mao said "Truth comes from the barrell of a gun"; 'Truth' being (controll of) information and the 'barrel of a gun' being power. The reverse is also true, that those who controll how truth is defined have the power. All the guns in the world won't help you if all the soldiers follow your enemies.
A horrible misquote of my own: "Guns are not strong boy, people are stronger. What is the strength of a gun without the hand that fires it?"
BeOS is going down because of the shift in focus to embedded devices by Be Inc. QNX, an embedded device maker, will takeover Be's desktop market.
Doesn't the reason for BeOS failing also apply to QNX? Is QNX going to focus on the desktop and leave embedded devices to Be? (I bet that idea has JLG creaming his pants)
Without drag and drop support I won't use it, so it's still Be for now.... although I seriously want that DVD player.
"FAIR doesn't like the fact that ABC lets Stossel prevent some "controversial" views that question basic assumptions about American morality and neo-socialist thinking."
Try actually reading the article. FAIR doesn't like the fact that Stossel fabricated evidence to support his position.
"Do you ever see FAIR criticizing the networks for running BOGUS scare stories from leftist thinktanks like the Alar-scare a few years ago..."
The only thing I can think of worse than another useless royal (or in JFK Jr's case, semi-royal;) celebrity expiring would be if another kid miraculously survived escape from Cuba.
You must have been watching something I didn't. The coverage I saw on CNN amounted to 'Young punks started fights with the cops' supported by interviews with cops. No mention of the shutting down of the Independant Media Center, no interviews with protest leaders, no questioning of the official police line.
Neither of the "think tanks" you cited ranked in the top 25. Amnesty International is not a think tank at all, and the VPC is unabashedly pro-gun control. The fact that you consider gun control and human rights to be a 'seriously left-wing agenda' tells me that they either already have you fooled or that you were a fool to begin with.
Actually, the news tends to be very centrist. It actually has a bit of conservative lean since it relies predominantly on conservative think tanks for analysis. While the most cited think tank last year was the centrist, and very establishment friendly, Brookings Institution, the next three most cited are conservative (Cato Institute, Heritage Foundation, and the American Enterprise Institute), and a liberal leaning think tank (Urban Institute) doesn't show up until 10th place. The only thing funnier than watching a liberal twit like Kouric is watching some bloated reactionary crypto-fascist try and convince the world that ABC/Disney is part of a socialist plot.
Folks, the media is big business, and like the rest of them values profit far, far higher than any political bias. Like most huge corporations they throw money at both, increasingly centrist, political parties while marginalizing far left or right views. The total lack of coverage of the protests in Philly and LA glaringly make my point.
I understand what you are saying, my point is that yes, assasination is wrong but we should charge the person who does the assasination not those who facilitated it (unless of course they knowingly and actively conspired to perform the assasination).
To hijack your example; it seems to me the judge isn't saying 'it doesn't matter if you were trying to help, you still broke the law' it seems like he's saying 'don't try and help any ladies across the street because you could jaywalk while doing it'.
Love your last bit, 'officer, he said he was gonna kill nine. Stop him before those nine people die'. Hah!
It seems in the decision that the availability of liscensed Linux DVD players influenced the judge's ruling. Why were other non-mainstream OSs mentioned? I have actually used DeCSS to copy a DVD movie to disk so I could view it in BeOS (my windows DVD software flakes out ten minutes into this particular DVD). In this particular instance using BeOS as an example would also have defused his fairly ignorant conclusion that Linux is a server OS and therefore not of wide interest or particular relevance.
I found that section telling as well. Funny that he used examples that were so horribly flawed. If DeCSS is really like 'assaination of a political figure', then by all means DeCSS code should be banned just like guns are. And if DeCSS is like viruses that can 'disable systems upon which the nation depends' then yes, DeCSS should be banned just like VisualBasic is.
Of course personal responsibility, the basis of a free society, takes a distant back seat to corporate greed these days.
"Cuz I like to see the events, not the two dozen "Life Stories" that take up 90% of the broadcast time."
That is my second biggest gripe with NBC's so-called coverage, and it fits right into my biggest gripe. Why don't they ditch the 'she boldly overcame acne to become america's favorite scantily clad pre-pubescent gymnast!' crap and show some sports other than Gymnastics (female for the most part), Basketball (Don't tell me who's gonna win, just gimee the spread), and the shorter Field & Track and Swimming events. As a fan of Soccer and Fencing I have been hoping against hope that I might be able to find some coverage of these events online (soccer? yea right, no time for commercials or human interest), but once again my hopes are dashed in favor of the publics slightly disturbing fixations on jailbait gymnasts and lopsided basketball victories.
Fuck NBC, Fuck the IOC, and fuck the Olympics in general.
DA: So you found Mr Gambino on the docks with a container of cocaine? Cop: Yes. Defense: How did you know to look for Mr Gambino on the docks at that place and time?
Cop: Anonymous tip.
Judge: Good enough.
Just because the FBI can not use a piece of evidence in court, does not mean they cannot use the evidence at all. And, as in my example above, with the legality of anonymous tips it no longer matters where the evidence was dug up.
IOActive says that a 'source code audit' was done, on OpenBSD presumably. Did they actually perform their own audit or are they relying on the obsd team's audit of the FreeBSD source that became obsd?
Or are they talking about something else entirely?
Bingo! That is it exactly. The only way to fight bad speach is with good speach. Using the tactics of authoritarianism to fight authoritarianism is, to put it kindly, stupid.
The copyright to 'Happy Birthday to You' is owned by the Warner/Chappell Music Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Time/Warner which is a member of the RIAA, a BIG record company, and a member of the recording industry. I bet you dollars to doughnuts that most every member of the ASCAP is either a member of the RIAA or owned by a member of the RIAA.
The idea that the 'music publishing industry' is somehow seperate from the 'recording industry' is patently absurd (ok, it might be patently pending absurd;).
There is also the fact that the male to female ratio here is about 1:10. Most of the watercooler discussions are of no interest to me and can easily move into territory I don't want to go to.
I didn't submit this one to the stories que, I figure they will check sources on my submissions from now on.
'Poseurs'? I don't think I've heard that term since high school... probably a reason I haven't.
Punk snobs, talk about contradictions in terms...

The children of the people who buy firearms there.
When I was sixteen (and as stupid , if not more, as most teenagers), I would have simply stolen it if they would not sell it to me.
A horrible misquote of my own: "Guns are not strong boy, people are stronger. What is the strength of a gun without the hand that fires it?"
I've always considered ManU fans to be robotic (ie mindless automotons).... ;)

Yep, their radio show has a piece on it here.
"The media is neither left nor right."
Correct, they are corporations.
