Seeing as how the 104th congress overwhelmingly voted down an amendment to HR666 (the aptly numbered Exclusionary Reform Act of 95) that was, word for word, the 4th amendment; you are undoubtably correct. A good site with the relevant excerpts from the debate is here.
"But to demand that the government facilitate the distribution of information is ridiculous. We're not guaranteed unrestricted internet access in our contract with our government, so there's no reason to fight these restrictions. Go ahead and ban porn in the libraries. That's their right."
'Their' right? They is us. Our right is to have freedom of the press. The internet is simply a big, fast, and cheap press, ergo we are guarenteed unrestricted access to the internet in our contract with the government.
"Think of it this way- we're constitutionally guaranteed the right to bear arms. But the government is in now way bound to provide us with guns so that we may exercise our rights. It's as simple as that."
Really bad example. It's more like: As long as we do not violate the rights of others (ie by shooting them or their property) the government can not tell us what we can shoot. The government, if they were to provide free shooting ranges (and they do in many state parks in Tennessee), could still not dictate what we could shoot as long, of course, as it does not endanger others.
... Matador, Estrus, Sub-Pop, Alternative Tentacles, SST, Dischord, Daemon... none of these is on that list, although I have no idea of their corporate owners if any.
"I don't think that there's one vulnerability in there for BeOS. I doubt there are any for AtheOS. Therefore, they're even better than Microsoft's platforms."
AtheOS I don't know, but BeOS has 4 known vulnerabilities so far in 2000 (0 in '99, '98, and '97). Still kicks NT ass by the faulty logic in the article... and by personal experience:)
"However, there is no way to deny that Evolution is and does happen, but the issue should not be placed as 'fact' to support a position that undermines religious conscience, which it is clearly presented as in the classroom setting."
Then the scientific method is being taught incorrectly. There are no facts in science, only theoroms. Theoroms can not be proven they can only be disproven. And science is perfectly willing (in most cases) to trash what had been thought before and start over from scratch when a theory is disproven.
Evolution should be presented as a theory with more supporting evidence for it than any other theory on the origins of species. I do believe that creationism should be taught; it's a perfect example of a theory with no supporting evidence.
"Charles Darwin and his theory got revenge in Kansas on Tuesday..."
I was hopping they had been clubbed to death by stronger, smarter, and faster school board members, but:
"...as voters turned out two of three state education leaders who last year led an effort to downplay the theory of evolution in school science classes across the state"
"Presumably they will need a warrant to use any information they gather anyway."
That statement should be amended right after 'gather' with "...in a court of law...". Just because evidence gathered by carnivore cannot be used in court does not mean that FBI analysts can't use it. Hell, just because the email is legal doesn't mean the FBI can't use it.
For instance, suppose I'm sending out emails supporting drug reform. The FBI, gunning for a pedophile on my ISP, scoops up my messages. Even though what I am doing is legal, even though the feds don't have a warrant, I could easily be added to a database of possible drug users at the FBI or, even more nefariously, those messages could be reported to my local police (or my boss) who would then keep an eye on me for something they could use in a court of law.
Such an ability would be stunningly simple to incorporate into Carnivore with keyword searches, nobody has to read it unless it gets flaged by the search.
By the tone of this post you might be led to believe I don't trust the FBI... you would be abso-fucking-lootly correct.
"First of all, I disagree with Mr. Katz' use of the term "Democracy" at the end of this article. The VAST majority of those reading this article (and who are part of the Techno-Elite) do not live and work in democratic societies. Point-in-case: The United States of America is NOT a democracy. We are a Republic (in a democracy, majority rules. In a republic, the majority elects representatives and those representatives do all the decision making)"
The United States is a Representative Democracy as distinguished from an Absolute Democracy as practiced in, for instance, ancient Athens. A Republic is a form of government in which supreme power does not reside in a single person but rather a group of people. A republic can be a democracy, oligarchy, plutocracy, soviet, etc.
I do, however, agree with your assesment of geek psychology. We are the quiet types, and as Londo Molari once remarked: "The quiet ones are the ones that change everything.";P
"Has anyone painted their cubes yet? Zebra stripes, polka dots, flowers, and PowerPuff Girl motifs spring to mind... "
How 'bout this? Thats the only new world desktop there, but Applefritter has many a cool modified Mac.
If'n Apple still supported Be, I'd have a dual proccesor joby on the way. As it is, I'm still waiting for the dual Athlons (I think I will name them Penny and Maggie).
iMac w/ G3-350 runs DP4 of OSX quite well. Even beige G3s can run OSX. 7100 with a G3 upgrade doesn't though... probably no NuBus support, anyone tried it on a G3 upped 603 or 604 PCI mac?
Granted it is faster on a G4, but so is everything else.
I'm not sure what model they use, but where I work I have a half dozen slot loading iMacs to support and the only problem I've had with them is figuring out how to force eject a CD (sorta poke a paper clip, the shepard's staff of mac techs, where one would normaly poke it on a tray load CD... you have to kinda guess).
My pioneer car stereo works like a charm too, except it skips when I hit a bump while turning... probably the Tokikos' (performance struts) fault rather than the CD player;)
So by your logic, posting an article explaining how to fire a gun would make one liable for every murder or assault commited with a firearm. An article on 'toe-heel' driving could make you liable for every speeding ticket in the nation. The CDC would be responsible for every BackOrrifice hack, and don't write a book on programming since that would allow someone to write a virus for which you would be responsible.
I am not responsible for what people do with the information I give them unless it can be proved that I actively conspired with them to commit a crime.
Is it just me or does this line: "Even on an older PC with a 5 or 10 gig hard drive..."; make some of you feel really old? Hell, I've got an 'older PC' with no hard drive and another with a 20 meg HD.
"If they would make a *black* and clear iBook, all the males who don't savor carrying a disgusting orange notebook and who are a little iffy even on the gender-corrected baby blue one but would *enjoy* a sprightly, long-battery-life, Airport-ready notebook would snatch them up."
They make a graphite one that looks very good. But I'm with you, it needs XGA and a larger monitor.
"Hi, this is Rand Race. I'm in a drug induced stupor right now and cannot find the phone. If you are a telemarketer please take me off your list and fuck off after the beep. If you are an aquantaince you should know I never listen to my messages so call back later.... (beep)"
I wonder if an automated system telling another automated system to remove the first automated system from the calling list of the second automated system would work? Probably require yet another automated system to edit the list.
"You may not agree with the law or its interpretation, but that's no excuse for breaking it!"
How would one test the constitutionality of a law without breaking it? Rosa Parks is a pertinant example of why we should break wrong laws. It's called civil disobediance.

""Fundie" is an ugly term. It's like calling a Jewish person a "Hebie"."
A jewish person ('hebe' is the derogitive, not 'hebie') has no choice regarding his ethnicity. A fundamentalist does have a choice on wether to think for himself regarding the verity of the bible (that's what protestantism is all about). If a person choses to be ignorant, I have no problem insulting them.
"That doesn't mean I need to put up with you being rude to them."
No it doesn't. Neither do Nazis have to put up with me insulting them... but I will, they can ignore me to their hearts content.
"...as well as Paul's writings on the importance of tollerance."
Yea, I've got two... pull the other one. Tollerant my rosy red ass.
"Sorry if the truth offends any of you commie bastards."
Ugh, troll. But I'll bite.
So those of us violating a government sanctioned monopoly, ie Copyright, are communists? Funny, I always thought communists advocated government controll of the economy. Go read a book on economics or two and get back to us.
The eastern orthodox church has a better claim to the cannonization of the bible. The council of Nicea was held under the auspices of the Roman Emperor (highest authority in the eastern church until the fall of Constantinople in the mid 15th century) not the Bishop of Rome (soon to become Pontifus Maximus... the Pope).
My guess, however, would be that he's a fundie. Fundamentalists seem to hold Paul of Tarsus (author of Corinthians) in higher esteem than Jesus of Nazereth. As the old saw goes: Catholicism represents the victory of Peter's theology over Paul's; Protestantism the victory of Paul's theology over Peter's; and Fundamentalism the victory of Paul's theology over Jesus'.
No wonder you don't understand what he was protesting, you would have arrested him for not breaking the law too.
That is what he was protesting by publishing this story.
I will grant you that he could have written a better article about it, making his point more clear.

Hurtling towards 30...

My point was that the 'evidence' for Jesus' ressurection is the same as for Elvis', ie 'A bunch of people said they saw it..'.
As is the resurrection of Elvis in this era.
