No, they do not seem to be aware. Which is strange since you can change the interface in windows in a limited, but significant, fashion. No I'm not talking about themes, I'm talking about replacing Explorer.exe with a seperate shell. Several shell replacements for windows are out there, most significantly Litestep which is an After/Open/NeXTStep clone... open source as well! While you just can't get around the fact that you are still using windows, you can make it as painless as possible to use. Granted it can be a bear to setup, editing step.rc files and such, but even that is getting easier as the project matures.

I agree that societal effects will be huge, the electrical system being a great example of massive societal change being spurred by technology. Very much like those widespread AC electrical systems though, the internet has also spurred many scientific advances. I'd say we were on the cusp of both scientific and social discovery of a magnitude unseen since the beginning of the century, and perhaps since the industrial revolution.

I've been greatly amused lately at people calling Linux a disruptive technology; it's like calling a Ford 289 V8 a disruptive technology when it is the automobile itself that is the technology that altered the societal framework of the nation. Internetworked computers are going to make for a huge change in both society and science regardless of OS or hardware.

Let's hope we wake up to the reality of this new world faster than those of us in the south (and really a lot of the US) got over racism... getting over really; Here in a southern metro region of a half-million people one could think we're over it, but go across the mountains where the black population is closer to 0% rather than 50% and you will see that some of us have a ways to go.

Ever heard of vinyl? Tape? Try ripping a 45 RPM single sometime and then tell me if DLing it across 56k is so sucky. America's method is the one that stresses responsibility, ie you can say anything that you want to but you must face the consequences of your speech, you are responsible for what you say not the government, not AOL, but you and you alone.

All kidding aside, I found a great flaw in his argument. All of his arguments depend upon humanity being limited to a single ecosphere with no limits on transference of both physical and informational objects. Nanotech, in addition to it's effects directly upon humans, could easily create materials strong enough for space elevators and conductors effective enough for cheap mass drivers. Robots can have habitats witing for our arrival. Opening space up allows humanity to create one of the finest safety nets a species can have; not having all your eggs in one basket.

It has been argued that humanity no longer evolves due to the lack of natural selection and because we no longer have populations isolated from the 'mainstream' genetics of the race. NGR combined with space exploration can fix that in a hurry. We would actually be able to controll our own evolution (or at least our portion of humanity's evolution). Let genetics and nanotech run loose on the habitats, if we lose a few the impact is negligable in the long run. We could create our own biodeversity, another safety net against extinction.

The other thing that truly makes me irate is the tired luddite assertions (both in the article and here on /.) that technology will take our jobs away and we will have nothing to do. The 'dignity of labor' is a crock. If I am doing a job that a fucking robot can do better, that's not dignity thats just make work on an industrial scale. The only thing the demobilization of the work-force would do is take away the pieces in the rich-man's game that has come to be called capitalism. Is digging ditches any more dignified than sitting on the couch, drinking beer, watching TV, and screwing would be? Eventually people will get bored and educate themselves to find something they want to do. Voluntarily, no forcing people to be unhappy so they can 'earn a living'. Make living a right and thay can earn something like a degree or literary praise, or whatever they want to earn.

    3. With respect to which the party complained of was either:
