My understanding of Steve is that Apple will not be following Nokia's lead.
Compare:
provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task. to
Nokia, for example, is not allowing any applications to be loaded onto some of their newest phones unless they have a digital signature that can be traced back to a known developer. While this makes such a phone less than "totally open," we believe it is a step in the right direction. We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone's amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs.
I read as Steve is saying Nokia's solution is a simple and not truly open system but Apple is working on an advance open system.
About a month ago the fatwallet community produced a crazy rebate scheme where you profit off bundled software. The scheme originated in this thread. The scheme has since been used for many more deals. I am just wondering if it is related? The rebate T&C say the rebate can not be for more than the cost of the product. The scheme worked by claiming rebates from the retailer (by buying a hardware and software bundle) and the software distributor at the same time and assuming they don't realize your the same person (i.e. lack of communication from the retailer and distributor). To sweeten the scheme you could buy competing software packages and use them for the upgrade rebate. If this is related then Frys must of caught onto the scheme.
I think it's frightening that whole city blocks can be barricaded and declared off-limits for the people who live there so that a bunch of politicians can feel secure from the plebs. No one lives in the CBD. Unless you sleep in your office this shouldn't effect you because it is going to be a public holiday and you should have no reason to be in the CBD. (Many joke about sleeping under your desk because in Australia you are taxed for travel to work expenses... the rational given is that you could theoretically sleep under your desk...)
The only people that are effect are people like me that need to get to the airport tomorrow. In normal conditions it should take me 30 minutes to travel to the airport. I was told by the RTA to give an extra 3 hours for travel or go to the North Shore and get to the airport from there. This is like telling someone to go to Jordan (okay no boarder crossing required but same principle) to travel from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv.
Personally I think it's a huge shame that I can't walk up to the Prime Minister and argue with him about his policies. You can catch up with John Howard every morning during daily walks. The Chaser did a prank about this during the first series after a school kid came up to Howard with a screw driver and hugged him. You can watch it here (low quality).
I didn't link to the ABC website because it is supposed to be for Australians only to view. They aren't doing anything to non-Australians but if at the end of the month most of their bandwidth bill is from international traffic be sure they will start ip locking it. The ABC is happy with their content being available on as many possible channels (they even upload torrents of their shows to bit torrent networks) as long as they aren't paying the bandwidth bill.
I haven't. Does this presuppose the use of television or some such nonsense? They usually have a major boost of awareness after they have their pranks make the world wide media. You, now, know of them because of this prank. I first found out about them after the 'Terry Wrist' prank. (I actually remember reading it on slashdot... yet I can't find the article when searching for it.) They are giving Australia Security a few good lesson.
Their finest moment has to be wheeling a trojan horse full of greek soldiers into the turkish embassy.. (can we park this here?) Sure. Here it is. The Australian Army actually let them into the courtyard of their base. At least then someone yelled check out the horse. But amazingly the Opera House is part of the APEC lock down yet during the Torjan Horse prank they went right past security with the horse.
The third series of the Chasers War on Everything started yesterday. Back in the first series they did a prank with Virgin Blue booking e-tickets under the names 'Terry Wrist' and 'Al Kyder' (you can watch the clip here). This prank should be aired this Wednesday.
Tomorrow people living in Sydney will be getting a public holiday and the city will be complete lock down mode.
Because it is our baby. . . . On second thought it might be to say out of this delusional discussion. Do you people even realize what makes you delusional?
It was just a few days ago the Open Source elders asked people to stop bashing Microsoft.
Skype did not blame Microsoft for the outage. They admitted the fault was in their software. We are not children here or part of a cult. This type of child play is no appreciated here.
A book has the wonderful property that it is easy to flip back and forth between pages. It's easy to estimate where you are/were in a book by the thickness of the remaining pages in your hand. You can perform what amounts to a binary search for a specific page with minimum of fuss. None of these are yet true with books displayed on a computer. Which is what interests me about the iPhone and similar technologies because they make such feedback available. The speed of the flip of your finger can be used to estimate the number of page turns you want. Actually it offers more feedback because if you suddenly see what you are looking for then you can just stop and maybe scroll a bit up.
Just in case anyone is interested in buying a new QX6850 which features 3Ghz 8mb cache quad core processor with 1,333MHz FSB. It is going to cost you $999.
Internet Explorer supports HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Does it matter if IE doesn't support CSS curved corners? As long as IE can display the main information it is good enough. Firefox doesn't support many parts of the standard but I don't here you complaining. The only reason why you complain is because firefox supports more than IE. If you were a true standards fighter you would be complaining at firefox too.
I understand that there is reason to be upset at Microsoft not for progressing IE but there is no reason to spread FUD. It will be Microsoft's loss in the long run not yours.
I used Internet Explorer the other day to browse Slashdot. Right now I am using Epiphany. About ten minutes ago I was on another computer using Safari. In about 5 minutes I will be using Opera and in about 2 and half hours from now I will be back to using Safari. Does it make a difference? Not really. They are all tools. If one of them gets a little rusty or starts cracking I would be less likely to use but as long as it does the job I still will use it occasionally. No browse is perfect yet and they all have things that annoy me so I have learned not to give a damn.
Hey! Stop downloading. Your not an Australian tax payer. The ABC is funded by tax payers. That is why shows like the chaser's war on everything have to place a silly statement on their downloads page:
This video podcast is made available for use by persons located in Australia only. If you are not located in Australia, you are not authorised to use this podcast. The ABC grants you a licence to download these audio-visual files for your private, personal, domestic, non-commercial use only. You may not use these audio-visual files for any other purpose (including but without limitation downloading, editing, or using these files for the purpose of (a) distribution to a third party; or (b) promoting, advertising, endorsing or implying a connection with you (or any third party) and the ABC, its agents or employees). The ABC will not be liable for any loss or damage (including but without limitation any costs charged by your service provider incurred by you in receiving the download) which you may suffer as a result of or connected with the download or use of these files. Please note that qualifying educational institutions may be able to use these audio and audio-visual files in accordance with Part VA of the Copyright Act 1968 as amended. For more information, please contact Screenrights (licensing@screenrights.org). The ABC are very supportive of having their content in as many platforms as possible. As long as you don't download it from their website. In the case of The Chasers the producers upload every episode to bit torrent every week.
If they want some usefull stuff they might as well get them from Plan 9. The "successor of Unix." It has been open source since 2000 AFAIK.

I agree with your points but they let them reach Bush's Hotel without stopping them. This implies that security wasn't on to them enough.

Can I get a scholarship to Berkeley?
You mean like this?
Why not just sell out to a company like Red Hat?
Flash Lite is used on mobile devices. I assume this effects the Flash player on the Wii?

Mark Shaney, is that you?

After some 15 year old boy famous duped YouTube in deleting all of the chasers content by sending Google a fake take down notice. ABC's Ms Gibson said: "[ABC wishes] to get our content out there on as many platforms as possible, run by as many different operators as possible."
I think I'll wait till the unobtainium model comes out.
