See, this discussion wouldnt be complete without one of these comments. Never mind that it makes broad sweeping statements with no support, thats all part of the game.
1. The problem is NOT an overheating problem - the system simply does not overheat. It is due to premature and overly aggressive attempts at thermal control, invoked at what are NORMAL processor operating temperatures (65-80 Celsius), possibly due to faulty ACPI "passive cooling" parameter definitions and/or control methods.
65-80c is NORMAL? According to this, 80 is a "critical temperature" for most processors. Not what id call normal.
In any other discussion, a willful disregard for scientific evidence will be appropriately mocked here on Slashdot. So why should believing that the earth is 6000 years old be any different?
Thats a nice straw man you have there, did you make it yourself? I was under the impression that "age of the earth" had a NUMBER of different positions among christians, and that "young earth" was only one of them. But if it makes it easy for you to ridicule christians, by all means continue; it really helps your case to accuse others of being irrational in the same breath you commit logical fallacies.
And why should believing anything from a book compiled for a purpose ~1700 years ago be any more reasonable that believing the myths of other primitive societies?
And why should we believe modern neuroscience, i mean others have been wrong in that realm before right? So clearly their being wrong invalidates anything modern neuroscience can say.... Is that how your argument goes?
but you won't find a lot of Christians that believe just that without believing in all the provably false claims in the Bible
Ive heard that so many times, and yet the best ive seen pulled out is some claptrap about pi being 3, or willful ignorance about what metaphorical language is. (And these are the same people who will have no issue understanding "he was so hungry he could eat a cow", who then turn around and find that in the Bible, and remark on how stupid its writers must be for thinking one person could eat that much meat!)
Maybe im just a jerk but i find it really amusing when people launch into irrational attacks on others, all the while claiming that its their target that is irrational. I know its probably just as foolish for me to engage in this kind of discussion on the internet, but really I expected better from slashdot since fallacies are commonly ridiculed here.
It would work, you know, you could certainly hook a desalination plant up to this and perform some desalination. I dont see where he mentioned bypassing the laws of thermodynamics at all or what the efficiency of such a system would be.
Not sure how important this is with IE8 and Win7-- IEs protected mode vs Chrome's sandbox vs whatever firefox has may be a wash. Chrome and IE may even have a leg up on firefox.
and very strict on what I run as.exe and where I download them....ad-aware just found some wind32 trojan
If you start downloading unsigned executables from untrusted sources this will always be a risk. You may want to make sure that A) youre not relying on ad-aware as your primary AV (as it isnt an AV! might as well use clamwin if you dont want active scanning) and B) your plugins (im looking at you, adobe reader!) are up to date-- that seems like a VERY common attack vector these days.
He didn't "break in to a highly sensitive military computer network". He leaned against the door and found it opened
That seems like an awfully weak argument. It seems clear to me that we're dealing with a functional and intelligent human who could not have honestly mistaken his access for anything but illegitimate.
Now, finally, I don't think Asperger's should be used as a cop out or an excuse, but it is medically defined and can be diagnosed
So is just about every other category of behavior. Ive been diagnosed as well, but attempting to define what I can and cannot do by a diagnosis would be a cop out. Because you have been labeled into a category of "tends to perform well here and badly here" does not in any way excuse you from laws or consequences.
While we're at it why dont we make special exemptions for those with ADHD, and depression, and OCD, and the disgruntled... Im sure we can categorize everyone in SOME way and perhaps if we continue at it long enough we can find a special reason why NOONE should be punishable for their actions. After all, we're all sick and have no personal responsibility right?
Having a belief that copyright laws should be protected does not mean you think that their violations are "the most serius bit of public misbehavior a citizen can get up to". We have laws, you either follow them, or act to change them, or get punished through them. This is how society works.
Based on what Ive read and remember of such devices, Id much rather the thing be useable and have an OS designed for getting actual work done than use windows mobile. My one experience on it with the Touch Pro (which everyone raved about) was awful; it seems to me that when it takes 4-5 clicks to actually begin making a call on a phone, and you can easily hang up simply by bringing it to your face, the maker has lost touch with what the device is actually supposed to do well.
You may have a point with the iPhone, precisely because the iPhone doesnt do things that it cant do well. The same cannot be said for winmo. Its also the reason i will continue to love my blackberry despite how slow it can be at things like web browsing-- it does its primary functions very well (phonecalls, calendaring, contacts).
And if you go into any restaurant and ask for sushi, you will be getting rice. This entire argument is stupid because its a japanese word used in japanese restaurants, and it follows the proper japanese meaning. However much american consumers may wish the meaning to change, theyre simply going to get the incorrect dish if they use the incorrect word.
I dont think it matters terribly much with a reverse session, since whoever connects over that port is sending YOU control of their computer. Not really that much a risk of some hacker abusing it.
Its free for business use as well. Their eula does not forbid it, suprisingly enough.
For friends and family, www.teamviewer.com-- allows on-the-fly remote session; it generates a session key when they run the client end which you put in to connect. It also supports setting up longer term access through a windows service if desired. This one really IS only free for home use.
Chrome (dev channel) has adblock plus. With subscriptions (easylist), a cute little icon, and gui-driven configuration that is identical to firefox's. I really do not see any area where firefox has a leg up-- even the dev tools rock in chrome. I can inspect an element, toy around with the CSS, and watch the changes apply in real time on the web page (note i am not a web dev).
An interesting note on this: I currently run Chrome (dev channel) with 3 extensions. A few days ago my extensions went to update, and all of a sudden I had an alert that the youtube extension update was going to change its permission level to grant it access to all websites. I promptly denied the request and uninstalled the extension.
Maybe Im crazy for not expecting this to be the default for all extension systems, but I was impressed.
If he is on the pay-roll he should probably join a union.
well youve sold me, thats all the rationale I need.

You do realize that having a gigantic hosts file can slow things down, right?

the greatest corporate evil ever.
Yes, open sourcing the wave protocol is just the latest of their offenses.
Do you have an actual complaint, or are you just (justifiably) concerned for how big they are and the POTENTIAL for evil?
Batteries should be replaced every few years as well.

non-administrative account 99.999% time

Had it occurred to you that people can manage this without the help of a clinical label?

Get win 7 professional. Have your IE8 in 7, and your IE6 in xpmode. Problem solved.
What constitutes personal?
Also, does this apply to cookies? The data isnt actually stored on your server, but on the client machines...

In otherwords do the favor in a way theyll be sorry they asked. Couldnt you just say "no" and make everyone happier?
Then you would have forbidden them from buying a PC, and required they buy a mac,
So rather than spending an hour every 4-5 months fixing their computer, just make them pay a $400 premium for the computer. Great plan!

Especially with the whole "Did you mod but not pirate games?" aspect. Good luck finding those.
Kind of like with bittorrent, right?

IIRC extensions are XPI files, which can be unzipped in to their component parts, and the source viewed.
