Assumption is the mother of all fuck ups. You assumed that I meant default. What does that make you? A... (hint, hint, put two and two together).

First off, it was a joke. For a complete definition, see Webster's Dictionary.

Secondly, I've seen default RedHat installs survive a lot longer than 24 hours on a University connection, although I've also heard of RedHat installs getting owned in four hours through dialup of all things.

Lastly, if you take an hour to update and shut down stuff you don't need, you're a lot safer than the dumbass who went to Windows Update and rebooted four times.

Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

Is it really fair? You can't possibly say your software is 100 percent reliable. No software is. Not even Linux. That's why the Open Source method is so effective. It weeds out the bugs.

No matter what you do, there's always something that will cause software to crash. What happens if someone's CPU fan dies, and their OS has a kernel panic because of it? Does the software company owe money even though it's the CPU fan manufactuer's fault?

Most importantly, where do you draw the line and say, "This is a stupid user error, not a software error." And who makes that call? I certianly would think scandelous home users can't be trusted to do this, nor can big software companies. And what merits a successful recording of crashed software? Logs on a machine that can be altered by the owner? If they couldn't be altered, would you WANT software like that on your PC?

Read the Omega File. The NWO headquaters will soon be under Denver International Airport. It also says that Germany is set to be a key player in the coming of the New World Order, and that they were heavily involved with Grey aliens in WWII. It all makes sense thanks to conspiracy theories!

What about SuSE Linux? It's free as in beer, free as in speech, and very German. It's also a very good OS. It would only make sense that the German government would adopt it. This is the same reason China won't use M$. It's sad to see that only foreign governments are realizing that Microsoft software is not secure!

It's almost ironic how pictures of people being beaten, tortured, brutally killed, and dead on autopsy tables can be readily found on the Internet, but put a fake picture of a kitty on a bottle up and you've got hell. This is a very clear indication of the backward priorities and lack of critical thought our society possesses.

  10. Game-Centered Distribution on id On Linux: Bad News · · Score: 1

Perhaps a better solution to all this is to develop a linux distribution with the sole purpose of being a workstation. It would focus less on services like BIND and sendmail, and more on GUIs, games, office suites, etc. A distro or two like this would be easier to support and could be used as something developers can make games for.

This would be nice, considering all the extra crap that comes in distros that no one will ever use. Furthermore, a lot of that extra stuff presents security risks (like the ever-dangerous BIND). Developing for a desktop-centric linux distribution might help push linux on the desktop faster, too.

I don't especially like George W. Bush, but you have to realize the error of your statement. Elderly people are the ones that vote more per person than any other age group. Technologically-confused elderly people will not understand the Internet and video game violence the same way an 18 year old would, and thus would probably agree with Bush. He's appealing to the people who vote the most, which is what any wise politician would do if he wants in office. Regards, Neil

  12. A Stupid Plan for a Greedy Ban on Metallica Wants To Ban 335,435 Napster Users · · Score: 1

This is a pretty stupid--and pointless--thing for Metallica to do. So what if they actually get their ban? It's called a new account. All these people will have to do is create new accounts and Metallica's efforts go to waste. Even if they ban using IPs, a lot of Napster users are in college, and run their computers on high speed networks with dynamically configured IP addresses. All a user has to do is get a new IP. Maybe Metallica should try something a little more productive with their time instead of selling out and proving that they're only recording music to make money.

  13. Potential MP3 Player??? on 50-Dollar Hackable "WebSurfer" · · Score: 1

I was looking at the Websurfer hack (http://www.linux-hacker.net/websurfer/ws.html) and got to thinking about what this thing would really be useful for. I saw a story in MaximumPC a while back ago where they had made a portable MP3 player out of a rack mount case and some special hardware (http://www.maximumpc.com/route66/index.html). The kicker was that the estimated cost was over $1,200 for their system. A little too steep for many people. But this tight little $50 (or $199) contraption, with a little hacking, a big hard drive, and Linux could probably do the same job. The mobo, chip, RAM, and sound card (chip) are already taken care of. All you'd need is some type of display (~$130 vacuum fluorescent display system (http://www.linuxcentral.com/) onto it), the wiring to make it work in a car (Radio Shack), one more 32 MB DIMM RAM piece (~$20 on Pricewatch), and a nice huge 20 GB Hard Drive (~$120 on Price Watch). I probably left a few things out, but the point is that this is potentially a killer sub-$500 (or $700) car MP3 player with enough storage space for a ton of MP3s. If only I had a car....

Maybe you haven't ever had less than tons of money in your account, but the rest of us in the real world know you can get by on a lot less than $20/hr. Ask any college student about living on $6.50/hr while going to school.
