They are simply not a monopoly and ultimately there is no political will to tackle this because our politicians donors are making a lot of money with Google. There is nothing wrong with Google placing their apps and services at the top of search results. You CAN move your eyeballs two inches down and find.......drum roll...other shit.

They haven't forced anyone to do anything. I can change the channel and ignore Google if I want. Everyone is using Google so Microsoft, who the Senators happen to be heavily invested in (and just about every government fund imaginable), is having problems climbing the rungs of the Internet so they want to give Google a few kicks in the teeth. Bing is still a joke, while DuckDuckGo (which supposedly uses Bing) is better than Bing?! WTF?! On my web statistic Bing is a literal drop in the bucket, while Google is where it's at. This is not going to change any time soon.

Insightful is right. I have had many people contact me from school and my early days, and while I do not dislike them, I really do not have anything in common with them. I have never really met anyone I had much in common with. Being a geek and only stimulated by deep intellectual reasoning and grand thoughts, I really can not relate to anyone. The only people I really can relate to are ones as smug as I. I don't mean to be smug but I really only enjoy deep intellectual conversations--in other words I hate ESPN and that makes me an outcast with "regular" people. I do enjoy long periods of internal thought and I'm very creative and an accomplished analyst of great value who is capable of social interaction at work (people like to work with me for instance). I often though have to tell people I do not like sports when they try to talk about them with me (or shows since I don't watch TV or have cable), but they eventually leave me alone about it and accept that I don't swing that way. Does it cause social roadblocks, probably, but I'm relied upon to accomplish serious work so it helps people look away from what could be perceived as my "snobbish" nature. Some might even guess I'm a religious fundamentalist from my views and behavior but I have no affiliation like that whatsoever.

It kills me how worried professors are about people cheating. It is tough to cheat without getting caught, and it is tough to progress in a field if you fudged your way through at some point. Let em cheat, but be vigilant. Where I work some students were overheard discussing their plans to cheat on a math test. The staff member who overheard went and told the teacher who curtailed their efforts and completely foiled their plans. Little did these students know (who were on a nursing path) they were silently flagged for rejection from their choice study program when the time came for them to apply.

I, as an engineering student, have little benefit from cheating on anything since I have to know and understand everything to progress. In addition, MOST student respect the path of learning and value their accomplishments so they will not cheat out pf principle. I have been given the opportunity to have "take home" math tests for my higher courses and it has proven very fruitful. It gives me more time to really live with the subject matter and get to know it (removes the stress and allows real learning). Although I could have cheated it never crossed my mind. Subsequently, many other students brought their "take home" tests back and failed them--even in the light of bombing out they didn't cheat either.

Further, it caused several of us to come together and discuss and teach one another. We specifically avoided giving each other answers to the test questions and instead focused on relaying the fundamentals. I realize this is different for advanced math courses since you can't really give a person the solutions unless you work it for them, but I wish more professors would relax and let students experience this level of learning even if they themselves were not afforded the same opportunity.

University of Phoenix is a well marketed (read: recruiter attack) rip off. There are other universities that offer the same or better course work for a much better price. Why not go to a prestigious college like Oregon State University (large data center hosting OSS projects) for half the price? U of Phoenix has their prices set just right so your federal loans will just barely cover your tuition. In short, it is a joke--scam. I feel sorry for people when they tell me they are taking courses there, but I guess many must learn the hard way. I'm going to Miami University (on agreement with my community college) for half the price of that "school." For that money I could attend the University of Dayton--a real university.

I buy all of my books on Amazon and resell them for the same price (more sometimes). I refuse to deal with the college bookstore as it is the bastion of people who exercise poor financial planning. For most of the people I go to school with this formula a well guarded secret for some reason. Sometimes you can find the books even cheaper on eBay because, again, people do not realize that Amazon has them covered so they elect to sell on eBay where it is in fact a horrible place to sell books (limited market). Also, students get Amazon Prime (free) which means two day shipping for free with orders fulfilled by them. No, this isn't a shill for Amazon. It just happens to be a great service despite all the Amazon hate found on /.

It seems that they are encouraging people to use these devices because they realized they will work all the time. When communications flow in and out of your phone you will constantly be working, therefor handling time consuming communications on your own time (after work and weekends). I tried a smart phone but found that I didn't like not being separated from work communications when I was you know, not working. Some may say, "well don't get your work mail on the phone." Then it doesn't make sense to have the damn smart phone then. The first thing people do is run to IT with their new phone to get exchange mail setup. It is unhealthy.

It should never get to that point. A key component of managing knowledge workers is communication. You must communicate the why of your decisions or the people you are supposed to lead will resent those decisions and cut you out of the loop. Not a problem if you are managing people who do not want to know (laborers), but knowledge workers must be a part of the loop.

Study evidence based management. This is a must read for anyone concerned with performing well as a leader in a modern workplace.
