Are there? Show me a quote or two where somebody has actually written that. NOBODY actually believes Mac OS is totally immune, not even the most fervent of hipsters.

I DON'T HAVE A QUOTE TO SHOW YOU, I DIDN'T THINK TO DOCUMENT THE NUMEROUS TIMES I'VE ENCOUNTERED MAC HIPSTERS AND THE INVULNERABILITY O' THE MAC THAT THEY ESPOUSE. SEE, I CAN TYPE IN CAPS TOO. HAVE A NICE DAY.

The best investment you can make is to give that laptop to some enterprising person and tell them to make a blog or site and give you the a percentage of the profits. You might even be better of simply donating the laptop to charity and deducting the donation from your taxes. If you really need it for some reason or cannot possibly afford something newer, consider putting Xubuntu, Puppy, or some other lightweight OS on there. Cool Yngwie reference in your sig!

Consoles are simply more popular (for some reason). Popularity != better. Last time I checked, you can't play online in 64 (or 150- in the case of Joint Operations:Typhoon Rising) player games. You also don't get as much in the way of mods, updates, etc. Also personally, I prefer a keyboard and mouse for first-person games. Also, a PS3 is not going to look better than a PC setup with a good video card.

  7. Re:A respectable number on $50 to Get XP On a New Dell · · Score: 1

Most of the truly GREAT games I've played have been on the PC. Deus Ex, System Shock 1/2, the Half Life series, Fallout 1/2, Morrowind (yes, there was an XBox port, but it was horrible, and the modding was the best part anyway), Oblivion (again, the modding MADE the game, fixing very broken things that won't be fixed on the console because they're features, not bugs), The Witcher, the Thief series, Starcraft, C&C Red Alert 2, and a host of others. Games that have come close to that on recent consoles? FFX, Suikoden III and V, and MGS2 are the only ones that come to mind. The GTA series, I guess, sort of, though Vice City is the only one that I like enough to play through again--San Andreas is only fun for the occasional cheat-fueled rampage/car chase, and is more like a quick game of Tetris to me than anything else. At least a couple of the PC games listed above are installed on my PC at any given time, and I play each of them at least once every couple of years (exception: The Witcher, since it's so new, but I'll likely go through it again next Spring and try some different things). I like *amazing* single player experiences. I've seen it happen more often on PC than on consoles. I don't know whether I just have different tastes or whether console gamers/reviewers just have very low expectations, but blockbuster, super-popular games like Halo and God of War just bore me. Whatever the reason, I'm sticking with the PC until console games get better or PC games get much worse. Exactly. The console experience comes nowhere near that of gaming on the PC. For some reason everyone has bought into the notion of the supremacy O' the console.

Or you can focus on something fun and aesthetically appealing, since games are a visual medium. I spent plenty of time in the '80s playing the 2600 and the NES, now I want to look at better graphics. I wonder if would be hearing "focus on fun, not graphics" if the situation were reversed, and Linux had all the modern games? I suspect that would then be touted as another of Linux's advantages.

I should have mentioned; there are some Linux games that I like. My point is that people on /. routinely try to say that gaming on Linux rivals or exceeds gaming on Windows, which is simply and obviously not the case.

Now, I'll expect one of the following responses from someone here: 1. "But it runs World of Warcraft (in Wine)!" 2. "Linux users aren't worried about games, buy an XBox 360. "..try Linux and enjoy." Enjoy what? Not being able to play more than 3 games? Enjoy learning millions of arcane commands to install software? (Which some of us may find interesting, but not everyone has the inclination nor the ability to learn.) Enjoy not being able to use your wireless card, and having to use your video card in 24 bit mode (if you can get it configured at all)? I use Linux myself (I dual-boot Vista and Mepis 32 on my laptop; XP pro and SuSE 10.3 on my desktop), and it is much better than Windows in many ways. Unfortunately it is not realistic to try to tell your average user that they can entirely switch from Windows to Linux without sacrificing some functionality. Also, rather than admitting its deficiencies, Linux-users try to spin them as strengths. In the aforementioned example of there not being games, Linuxphiles will say "That's because people who use Linux aren't worried about games" or "Just buy an XBox 360 if you're worried about games." If it were the other way around and Linux had the vast library of titles, they would be touting that as another example of superiority over Windows. (Oops, I forgot to say "Windoze". Whew! I almost got my /. card revoked.)

Guitar Hero is an odd phenomenon. On one hand it's good to see kids take any interest in guitar playing that exceeds two out-of-tune chords, on the other people are starting to equate playing Guitar Hero with actually playing guitar! People need to gain some perspective and stop trivializing the work of people who actually put in years learning to play. They are two completely different universes. It's baffling how everyone will crowd around someone with a plastic guitar pressing some buttons, but would have no interest in actually seeing a band play the exact same songs. Sadly, the average consumer is being led to believe they need more and more power. Look at all the Dell ads with some teenage girl saying "With this new Dell X5000 Flux Capacitor technology, I can surf the web and check my email!" Look at everyone now having dual core processors with absolutely no need. A girl at school was telling me last semester, "I'm getting an HP laptop with the dual...... (her voice trailed off, and I had to say "..core processor.") She didn't even know what is was called but was adamant that she needed it. Another especially funny example of processor-mania (and ineptitude) was 2 Mac-hipsters talking at a local coffeehouse, and my brother and I overheard one of them talk about "partitioning the processors."
