Are you kidding? Have you been in a cave for the last 20 years? Right now many public libraries are forced to use "net-nanny" software on all computers. Some do-nothing congressmen have proposed legislation many times to require such software on all computers. You act as if that's something that has never happened and that just points to your failure to know or understand the world around you. The Western world is not immune to the underhanded and totally ridiculous. Look at the filtering attempted in the UK and Australia already. Right now even US based usenet services have had entire blocks of totally legitimate groups deleted simply because they are on a blacklist for "potential" abuses... not that there have even been abuses discovered, just that they have the potential. So, don't get all uber-patriotic and say it doesn't happen here... it does. Wake up.

What about local and state governments right here in the USA that have required the same thing on computers used by "the children" ("Think of the children!")? How about even attempts by federal legislators to do the same thing? People who spout off the typical "those horrible Chinese!" lines usually neglect to see the very similar tactics used right here in the good ol' USA. And the US media typically fails to report what happens here, but readily paints a negative picture of life in China.

Apple is becoming like the CCP (that's the Chinese PRC gov't for the great uneducated), with the App Store like the Great Firewall. Both seem to be run rather arbitrarily and reactionary. While Apple has some nice hardware and software, their practices and the drooling fanboys completely turn me cold. I'd rather buy something, anything, else even if it has less functionality overall.

I thought the exact same thing. The injector determines the spray and droplet size entering the combustion chamber, so any device that affects the gasoline BEFORE the injector is highly unlikely to affect the spray/droplets entering the chamber. I agree. I'm already a T-Mobile customer, having their cell service for over 2 years and now also using their @Home router for a home phone. I've been thinking of upgrading my cellphone but have been putting it off to see what is coming up next. I think this G1 is what I've been waiting for. And like you, gmail is already my primary email account, so a perfect fit.

uh... "G1" is the model name of the phone, not the network it uses. "3G" is the moniker for third-generation cellular data network. Totally different. The T-Mobile G1 phone can use T-Mobile's 3G network. Perhaps if you cannot understand the difference in context, anything more advanced than a rotary princess phone is just not for you. :-)

  8. Truly disappointed in AVG after several years on AVG Backs Down From Flooding the Internet · · Score: 1

I began using AVG Free several years ago and liked it so much I purchased a two-year licence for the Pro version. It ran beautifully on my ancient P4 1.7GHz XP Pro machine, never noticed any performance hit. I also recommended it and installed in on many friends computers. Then came version 8.0. What a nightmare. The first time, I let it install everything and I could barely open my web browser afterwards. I uninstalled it and then did a custom install and deleted everything except the anti-virus/malware/rootkit options. Since I use IMAP for email, I didn't install the email plugin either since it doesn't support IMAP. Performance hit was still huge. Just right-clicking on a file, any file, it would take anywhere from 30 seconds to a full minute for the context menu to appear. Totally unacceptable. Trying to copy a file from one disk to another would take forever. I used PROCEXP to look at what was going on, AVG was sucking up every processor cycle on every task I tried to perform. I emailed with their tech support, which was very attentive, I can not fault them on that, but there simply was no resolution that worked. Finally, I had to give up using AVG even though I still have many months left on my license. I'm now using Avast! and it is performing very well. I see no noticeable performance hit at all. I may go ahead and purchase a license for the full Avast!. I just hope they don't "upgrade" and disappoint me as well.

Under the current administration's "rules", the police do not need (or at least they don't think they need) a warrant. The FBI can simply issue a security letter that can be as vague as they like and the Patriot Act authorizes them to do as they please, without a judge ever getting scrutiny.

  13. Until Linux can install as easily as Windows... on Red Hat Avoids Desktop Linux, Says Too Tough · · Score: 4, Interesting

I don't have outrageous hardware, just a standard older P4 system with an ATI graphics adapter. I've tried 5 different Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, and Mandriva. None of them will install a working usable desktop. The default install doesn't use any of the abilities of my graphics adapter (an older ATI x1300Pro AGP model) so it is soooooo slooooow to paint it is unusable. Trying to install the included ATI drivers always results in the "black screen of death" that results in the only way to get out of it is to do a complete reinstall of the OS. I've spent literally days trying to get a distribution working to no avail. But WinXP installs, detects my graphics adapter without a problem, installs the adapter specific drivers, and is fast fast fast without me having to spend hours or days killing chickens under a willow tree during a blue moon after midnight. Even Vista installs on this machine without a problem (though I hate Vista and went back to XP Pro). And yes, someone always blames ATI for the problem. But pointing fingers doesn't lessen the issue: no Linux distribution will install and work as easily as Windows does currently. Until that is addressed, Linux on the desktop is a minor niche at best.
