    ...that your brain mostly benefited from doing different and new things. Trying new experiences, foods, languages, even things as simple as taking different routes to work and back create new paths in the brain which lead to quicker thinking and better recollection.

    But if you take one new thing (a video game puzzle) and do the shit out of it, the value is rapidly lost.

    At least that's how I've had it explained.

    you can actually run a full-bore linux on usb hard drives, not with a 4GB limit or stuff like that.

    install the distro of your choice on a laptop.

    take hard drive out, put it in an enclosure.

    boot to the now USB drive (with no hard drive in the IDE/SATA spot)

    fix the mount points to point to the right /dev/sdbwhatevers

    fix the swap space or config cryptswap (if you don't, it will trash the shit out of the /dev/sdawahtever was the old swap...i.e. the persons primary hard drive, partition x, that uses it next)

    clone the usb drives however you like to do that, partitions and all, for each student.

    Maybe it's because there are basically ZERO jobs in most places for real hard-core CS. What few jobs DO exist require the ability to produce actual usable products...applications programming, especially web where the ability to hand-code a balanced search tree won't help at all. Ask a Flash "developer" about registers and instructions on the stack.

    My college changed the first 3 CS classes to Python instead of C++ because it's easier. Then when they get to Data Structures, they've gotta learn C++ for the first time, at the same time.

    Now queue the arguments about the logic skills that HR doesn't care about. Colleges all over the nation (and other nations I'm sure) already crank out degrees no job market asked for....I'm not sure I can blame the CS depts for trying to stay relevant.

    By running my users as restricted accounts, disabling autorun, and forcing security patches to be auto-installed and forced reboot, i've avoided any real problem for YEARS.

    This is a fascinating point.

    The odds that any 2 un-introduced civilizations might be dabbling with RF communications at the same time are probably pretty slim.

    OTOH, we are backwards-compatible. Someone around here knows semiphore protocols, morse code over light, i'll bet someone on /. even knows a thing or two about smoke signals.

    The odds that any civilization who surpasses RF communication completely abandons all knowledge of it is probably pretty slim.

    They can't fix the rendering engine because it renders as expected the code generated by ASP .NET.

    They'd have to fix...basically everything. And they aren't going to.
