  1. Why not have some system that sits there sending a message every 30 seconds, and warn when it stops....

  2. Re:Not About Pornography on Et Tu, Mozilla? Firefox 3 To Get Privacy Mode · · Score: 1

Unfortunately, whether or not information is stored on your computer has no, or very little, effect on how much information sites you visit can obtain on you. Google, for example, logs the IP address of every search made, and that won't change when you go incognito...

Or, on the other hand, couldn't you say that if the passengers of a plane had more contact with the wider world, it might make co-ordinated hijacking more difficult?

  4. Re:Nah on Are 80 Columns Enough? · · Score: 1

If you're working across any kind of large project, particularly an open source one, then different parts of the code are bound to have different indentation / brace attachment styles. Surely the best thing to do is just to match the style of the module, be it tabs or spaces, (but yes, never a mixture!)

  5. Formats... on BBC Threatened Over iPlayer Format · · Score: 1

The BBC supposedly use a RealMedia format for their live streaming radio services too - that doesn't stop me from using VLC to listen to it: So, the question is, are the problems with proprietry formats the publisher's fault for choosing a proprietry codec, or the codec developers fault for not allowing it to be clean-room reverse engineered?

The real limitations of any system are the hardware ones, after all no matter how clever your file system is, it can't beat thermodynamics. I find it quite remarkable that an assumption is blindly made that the hardware will keep up with exponential growth, although i admit that is likely for the foreseeable future.

I acknowledge that sure, something like this may be necessary one day, some people are very foresightful!

One zettabyte is a billion terabytes, even combining disks thats quite a lot.

  8. ZetaBytes?! on ZFS On Linux - It's Alive! · · Score: 1

I don't have a ZetaByte Disk, and I'm not going to any time soon, so why do I care about a ZetaByte files system!
Anyone who can afford that much storage can afford to pay a little for a driver built however they like. ... At least for the immediate future.
