  1. Re:DNA and alien biology on The Starchild Project Claims to Have Alien Skull · · Score: 1
Yeah, but if you look through the site you find an idea that neatly sidesteps the "non-human DNA argument." The aliens are the ones responsible for Earth life in the first place. They seeded life on the planet and made us, maybe in their image, to effectively terraform the planet. So... even if it does turn out to be basic human, normal DNA, it's still extraterrestrial in ultimate origin.

This is one to file away. Great material for creative writing.

Is your previous company really responsible for the customer's goodwill? Why shouldn't you attempt to acquire a new customer, after all, you're the one who did the work.

If your previous employer is on their game, they will be making sure the customer is taken good care of. If you can promise them something better and then deliver, well... that makes a happy customer, a well-deserved profit for you, and should be a lessen to the company who didn't recognize the depth of your talents when you worked for them. Maybe they'll steal the customer back.

Non-competes are unrealistic, against common-sense (especially free-market common sense) and don't work.

Hey... while some of Clarke's predictions do seem, from the vantage of the present, to be a little on the quick side, they are still possible.

    Consider this:
Just twenty or thirty years ago, most of the technology we take for granted today didn't exist in usable form. Right now, I am living in a world that is coming to increasingly resemble the science fiction I read as a kid.

The rate of technological invention and change is itself accelerating, because of two things: better and faster tech enabling better and faster tech, and self-fulfilling prophecy.

Don't naysay... work towards the prophecy.

If the shoe fits... why don't you just hand me a bible instead?

I've read Behe's book. He ignores or conveniently sidesteps many key points in his theory of irreducible complexity. One of which is absolutely essential: why does there have to be any prior function to a formative complex system at all? Or, better yet, why does that function have to be the same one the complex system exhibits now?

Species, our own included, are veritable treasure chests full of unexplainable and unused biological artifacts. Evolution can grow basic systems that are only waiting for a use or may have other uses than the one they were originally selected for. Sometimes the chance for use is actually there, and the traits kick in, confer an advantage upon the owner and evolve further.

Evolution takes all possibilities into account. Behe, Creationists and the Bible do not.

  5. Re:what DO creationists want? on New Mexico Drops Creationists, Decides to Evolve · · Score: 2
What do creationists want? It's pretty simple, really. They want to eliminate a threat to their way of life.

Creationists won't see reason on this. That's why they're Creationists.

Science and evolution triumphant equals a populace that are no longer dogma-ruled sheep. If Creationism is false, then maybe the Judeo-Christian God is false. If God doesn't exist, you automatically become the reponsible party. If you can't reason about something as basic as this, how could you handle that?

It says something about human nature and why change hurts... look how fervently people cling to this myth, rather than simply restructure their view of reality and their own place in it.

Listen... let me tell you an open secret. God is dead. I killed him. He didn't make any sense and it was a mercy to us both.

If something better comes along, believe me... I'll part ways with evolution for the thing which better fits the evidence before my very eyes.

I think it is past time for us to grow up as a race and realize that in many ways we ARE gods, with all the possibility for good and bad, and all the commensurate responsibility held solely by us. There is nothing inherently wrong with evolving. Razor

  8. No Subject Given on Apple Announcements · · Score: 1

No sound cards for the Mac? I use a Korg 1212 in my G3 300mhz machine for digital audio work and am pumping out 48 discrete channels of audio with many complex effects, all in extremely pristine quality. I write music, mix and master CDs right in the machine! The Korq has analog, SPDIF and LightPipe IO and rocks the world of just about anyone who hears it. The 1212 is only one of many options, as well. The Mac is the best machine for digital audio work, imnsho, and I've tried three major platforms extensively.

The 1212 sounds w-a-y better than the built-in set. Still, the stock sound system blows Windows "standards" out of the water.
