I am sure those uber tiny laptops get as much attention as well. I do not know if it qualifies as an 'uber tiny' laptopn, but my old 10.6" VGN-240P/L (link is a close match) gets a fair bit of attention, but it's usually limited to "That's the smallest laptop I've ever seen!" or at worst, "Start it and show me some programs". The latter happened just once. I think the fact that it looks like a laptop with all the 'standard' features (but no ports on the back) is the saving grace, but it does get them talking.

As someone who recently completed an undergrad at Georgia Tech, and having been the head TA for a 1000 student class for six semesters, I have heard enough complaints from students about their fellow students cheating. From my personal experience, Indians have no statistically significant proclivity towards 'ratting others out' that students from other countries. More importantly, educators generally ignore such complaints unless there is a compelling argument. We aren't all that dense and we do realize students often complain about others as a way to get ahead. Others complain due to their perceived disadvantage when students who are socially capable of working together in study groups do better than loners.

While it is possible you got the rough end of the stick, I think it is unlikely. It seems like the professor thought were cheating and because it was Indian students who complained against you, you left the USA and held a grudge against all Indian students from that point on? Is it only me who thinks it is more likely that you changed universities to give your disciplinary record a new start? I do not want to be making accusations and don't take offense to what I said, but this is what it seems like to me (and I am sure to others too). I hope you'll clarify.

I will say that Indian students are, however, more resourceful when it comes to cheating. Being an Indian who proctored tests, I can say that it sometimes takes one to catch one. The incidence of cheating amongst Indian students seems to be higher than students of other nationalities. I know that is racist, but most of the TAs I've worked with tend to agree with this statement.

Non technical people tend to implicitly trust Excel almost as much as they trust Buffet's stock tips and maybe this will allow us to leverage that in our quest for dominance...

Other than that, the noise cancelling works great and it's really cool how charging for 3-5 minutes gives you 3-5 hours of play at normal volume. Charge it for an hour and you've got 50 hours :)

I bought it off woot.com for $50 which was a great value.

I wouldn't have pursued graduate school had I not found something that I like doing. Academia is the second best career (next only to Software development) option in today's world. However, it is fairly odd that it pays so little. I am not too worried about that though - I'm pretty sure that teaching is one of the few things I'll be happy doing for the rest of my life. Research work needs to be relevant to keep me motivated, but in a narrow band of subjects I love researching as well.

On the brighter side - you got out of Tech in under 9 years which really is something I am craving for :)

I am not sure if you are under some sort of misapprehension, but an assistantship pays for your out of state tuition and you pay something ridiculous like under a 100 dollars for a semester. The assistantship also generally pays you a stipend of around $1500 a month which is ample to live as a bachelor in downtown atlanta.

I really hope that you did not put off graduate school because you were misinformed.

FWIW, I go to Georgia Tech and hope to start graduate school in January with an assistantship.
