Disclaimer: I drink more than average but less than some. Normally I drink heavily a couple of times per week, depending on whats going on in my life. In some circles I might be considered an alchy but I don't think so.

    Anyway...
I drink booze to get drunk, not necessarily to enjoy the flavor of whatever I'm drinking. That doesn't mean I don't like good beer, I do. Its just that I'm usually not drinking for the flavor alone.
In my experience, I cannot get very drunk on heavy beers without feeling terrible and getting a bad hangover. For example, if I drink a 6 pack of fat tire my belly will feel absolutely stuffed and I will have a nice buzz going. If I try to drink 2 more fat tires, I will probably be drunk, will likely throw up, and will definitely have a bad hang over. On the other hand, I can drink a 12 pack of coors light, get pretty damn drunk, can go eat a giant burrito (with the $$ I saved by not drinking heavy beer) and am only left with a minor hangover.

Some of my friends (the nerdy ones mostly) only drink heavy beer and they love making fun of me for drinking whatever cheap beer happens to be around. To be honest, this attitude (like your post) bothers me. I know the huge domestics run commercials that claim things like flavor etc. but we all know they can't compete with a microbrew that costs 3 times as much. There really isn't any comparison beyond the fact that both came from grain originally. They are an entirely different class of alcohol. And yet, beer snobs love to compare the taste between bud and sierra nevada.

I maintain that many beer snobs just drink to look cool and so they can rattle on about how superior their beer is to whatever else is around. If they actually liked getting drunk, vs a little buzzed, they would quickly realize that a few pints of arrogant bastard won't get you drunk, but it will put you to sleep and make you feel like shit the next day.

We (Americans) may not be formally educated but I would argue we are freer thinkers when compared to our counterparts in the east. Thankfully, we stress individualism very early on. And for the most part, we speak english natively. ;)

IMO, engineering and software development requires at least decent english comprehension and a mind that is free from cultural constraints that limit creativity. More oppressive government (China, Russia) and/or culture (China, India) generally limits the amount of new ideas generated. I've worked with talented Indian and Chinese software developers that could not hold a candle to talented American/European developers when it came to new ideas, simply because they didnt' think far enough outside the box. Those cultures may produce people that are, on average, much better at certain things than Americans, but IMO software development is not one of them.

I also don't see the east catching up to us completely since the major frameworks that they must use are based on our ideas and therefore our values. The fact that and most high level programming languages are based in US English is also helps keep us in the driver's seat.

This happens all the time, it is so bad now that I know officers who have knowingly let people go with other tickets (wet reckless) when they are drunk because they feel bad. If the law is so bad that the officers themselves don't want to enforce it, I think it is most certainly excessive.

Here's a little flame about my experience with TW cable:

I have been a Time warner customer for the past 2 years in San Diego, before that I tried AT&T briefly and Cox communications for about 5 years. We live in a house with 5 guys so we got the full package, movie channels, HD package, 6 boxes etc, cable modem with upgraded speed. I think our bill is around $130 a month.

The service has been absolutely terrible. Some of our HD channels drop out with a message saying it isn't available for days on end. No explanation is ever given. Our only HD DVR box (on the 64" HDTV) does 5 minute restarts daily, and our cable modem had problems for a long time until it was finally replaced. We have had technicians out to the house twice, and they still wont replace the HD box (took twice to get a new cable modem, that finally works reliably). There have been mistakes on our bill multiple times as well. Every time we have tried to call TW (probably 6-7 times), it takes at least 20 minutes to get a real live person on the phone, sometimes more than 45 minutes.

From what I've seen, TW gives customers used/rejected/inferior equipment, has extremely long wait times in every part of their call center, except bill pay of course. The technicians are VERY reluctant to replaces any equipment which makes me think their performance is based on how much hardware they replace, the less the better. This is a company that runs on economizing, not customer support. They will do whatever they can to save a buck at the expense of their customer base. Running banners to call a busy signal at Viacom is one more way the Time Warner is showing their true colors. Discounting a couple dollars does not make up for no longer receiving comedy central in our house (5 guys in our twenties).

I have never complained this much about a product or service, rather than just canceling and moving on (see AT&T Uverse and Cox). But after seeing the "director of digital communications" was on /. I thought I would share our terrible experience. This is the last straw for our household. We are going to a satellite service and I'm vowing to never do business with Time Warner again. I refuse to do business with any company the doesn't follow the golden rule when dealing with customers (see our house) and partners (see viacom). I doubt TWC treats their employees with much respect either. Maybe it's time to move on Mr. Director...
