  1. 38 & working for a startup on Ask Slashdot: IT Career Path After 35? · · Score: 1

I'm leading IT & operations for a startup, but it's also a startup that isn't run by a bunch of 20-somethings. I was brought on board by one of my former CTOs who started his own company. It definitely pays to not burn bridges, network, and keep your skills going. Personally, I'm not management type. I enjoying leading teams and such, but I will NEVER step away from keyboard.

  2. Nature of IT on Anxiety and IT? · · Score: 1

If you've been a sysadmin for any number of years, you know that the nature of the gig is thankless. Everything goes well, you hear a peep out of no one. As soon as something goes wrong, it's an immediate emergency for you. The holiday season in the US is our busy time, so needless to say everyone is on edge. This past week has been the week of everyone suddenly remembering everything they needed done before the Black Friday/Cyber Monday rush. My typical response: Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on my part. You're in the queue, we'll get to it when we can. Stack on top of this moving from one data center to two brand new facilities in the past 4 months (plus a third going online in January), my stress level and lack of free time has been maxed.

So this weekend starts my self-imposed stress reduction. That includes, getting back into the gym 3-5x weekly, eating better, and regular trips to the shooting range. Stress relief in the form of a .40 pistol and 12 gauge shotgun are quite effective. :)

  3. Plantronics Voyager Pro on Best Telephone For Datacenters? · · Score: 3, Informative

I've used this in my data center, sitting in the hot row on a conference call, and no one complained about the noise & could hear me fine. I've used it paired to my Crackberry as well as my Macbook Pro. Probably the best bluetooth device I've used.

  4. Re:Someone forgot about the Cradlepoint! on Mobile Wi-Fi Hot Spot · · Score: 3, Informative

I've been using a PHS300 from Cradlepoint with my Sprint USB broadband dongle for almost a year. I commute by train 50 mins each way daily. I turn it on, toss it in my backpack, and I'm online for the train ride with no problems & nothing hanging off my laptop.

  5. Already happening... on Dell Dropping The Floppy · · Score: 1

I just spec'd a Dell Insipiron laptop for a coworker today and found that the modular floppy is now optional. Just a month ago, it was included with the system.

Overall, I see this is a great move. The only downer that I could see off the top of my head would be the process of updating a BIOS in a system...

  6. Re:Apex 600a on What's The Best Combo DVD/VCD/CD/MP3 Player? · · Score: 1

I just picked one up today at Circuit City. THey had a shipment of the AD-600As that they recieved and were trying to get rid of. Got mine for $99.00. Originally went in for the AD-600 for $149.00. Personally, I'm not too picky on asthetics, nor on the prettiness of the menus. I just want it to play my DVDs, CDs, and the occasional ripped mp3 CD. And, from the majority of discussions that I hear, this one is a DAMN good bet.

  7. Re:What about AMD chips? on Unmasking Mis-Labeled CPUs · · Score: 1

AMD chips are easy to check. The speed is etched into the CPU itself. Just take the CPU fan/heatsink off and see what it says. That's the one thing that I don't care for is that OSes will see it as a K6-family but will not ID the exact chip. Seems that they just don't have enough of a hold in the industry yet. Personally, though, I will never buy an Intel chip again. :)
