I believe it started out pretty much as a mailing list service (and can still be used as such to a certain degree). I think the main advantage is the hosting of files related to the group.
Suggestion to you and *everyone* (who doesn't want to run their own email server). Buy a domain name and use the registrar's email forwarding service (most of them have them). You then have non-generic email and aren't held hostage by your email provider.
True. But on the other hand, there are also people seriously but not critically injured and also the fact that it could take as long (or longer) for the EMTs to get to your location as for you to get to the ER if your vehicle can switch to emergency mode.
How many switched to driving rather than flying not out of fear but because of the fsxking stupid and invasive security measures? Truly the damage the US has done to itself by inept government action in response dwarfs anything the terrorists managed to achieve directly.
Last time I went back to the UK, there were many more SUVs and minivans (people movers) on the road. And many more vehicles in general than when I left 14 odd years ago.
Let's not forget the idiots that speed up as you attempt to pass either. I'm sure there will be plenty of that going on: "Here I am at 62. Overtaking me? OK, up to 70. Pulled back in behind? Let's find that nice 62 again". Rinse and repeat.
Then there are the people who will sit in the overtaking lane, just over your rear bumper, barely or not overtaking you as you run up on a line of traffic in your lane 20-30mph below your travel speed. A little boost of speed there can save a whole lot of dangerous braking and merging.
Are you sure? It can sometimes be set with diagnostic computers. They use the same module for UK/US/EU versions and just change settings according to the market in many cases.
Many jurisdictions mandate insurance. That won't change with automated vehicles, I bet you. Even better, I bet the cars won't even start without validating your insurance code with a centralized database.

It's only an international crisis because the anointed one left his ass hanging out.
Nah, Oracle will just have its own Americas cup. With Blackjack. And hookers.
Cutting-edge, encrypted email should be an RFC, not a service.

Now I'm conflicted whether to go with a "series of tubes" or a "Whoosh" reply.
It's OK. It's all owned by Monsanto anyway.
Maybe volcanoes are aliens?
Be careful of generalizations. Slashdot is not a homogenous population.
But with that said, I will lay good money that eventually, automated cars will be driving faster than currently posted speed limits.

Probably also not legal in many/most jurisdictions.

I suggest you sprinkle food crumbs on your kitchen floor to investigate the outcome of a "guaranteed minimum income" type initiative.
It's interesting that these ideas tend to be espoused by those who also say we have a population problem.
If you can program at all, you might want to check out Unity 3D. I think there's a definite gap in the market for the kind of thing you're describing.
I agree. Though a completely centralized active grid would have its own issues. I suspect a hybrid approach might evolve.
Nope. Doesn't help with interference at all. It does help with confusion. Changing the channels is the way to work out interference.
Come back when you get over the idea that taxes are the only option for government to drain the economy.
Like English or actually English?
Who needs an ambulance*? Your self-driving car assumes emergency vehicle status and all the other self-driving cars get out of its way.
*OK, there will still be some need for ambulances and EMTs but it could cut out a fair bit of the need.
Cue ROT26 joke.
