OK, so we are to the point of having lead CGI characters. But their voices are still real people. In order to make a 100% computer generated character, we need the computer to do the talking. Why is this lagging so far behind the imagery? Is it because the industry and the Computer Science field has been preoccupied with the visual side of things, or are there still serious technical problems here? Can anyone in the know comment?
If you read the patent, you will see that is deals with sending the hyperlinks/information over the telephone network. Suing browser companies would not make sense, since their software works regardless of media. But ISPs like Prodigy *do* use the telephone networks, so the patent applies to them.
No... they were hit by a trojan, but I suspect that these cracker must be pretty good to remain undetected for 3 months, know how to find what they want and take it, etc.
Doesn't sound like script kiddie modus oporandi. horrible misspelling
That's funny, I thought they were protesting at the Republican convention. Obviously, the protesters don't belive people should have opinions that differ
with their own.
I am not an activist, nor do I know any people who were protesting in PA, but I think that your statement is inaccurate. I doubt that most of them were protesting that fact that a Republican convention was or could be held, but rather were providing alternate views and ideas. There goal was not to eliminate speach that they deemed wrong, it was to counter it with ideas they deemed right. They want a Republican convention to not happen; not becuase the government should not let it, but becuase no one would attend a Republican convention in their ideal world.
The point of David's experiment was to show that is was possible, which, as almost everyone on/. should know, is very different from practical.
Running 100 is completely feasible though. $145K/100 = $1450. $1450 is about the price of a decentally stocked PC. And when you add in the lack of rack space, networking equipment, power, etc, combine that with the amazing stability of an S/390 (something like minutes of hardware downtime per year, if that), you have a heck of a deal.
Now, in all fairness, $145K is the price if someone with an S/390 wanted to give it an extra processor to play with Linux/VIF on. A real ISP would have to buy a new S/390, probably would buy real VM, not VIF, and spend a lot more. Of course, if you raise the number to 1000, the numbers work even if the price is $1,450,000.
Yep... back in HS I erradicated a building-wide infection of a virus, and earned rights to virtually every non-administrative computer in the school, most importantly the library PC with a 14.4 connection to the 'net.
Microsoft also used different Web server and database server software [and hardware] than other vendors, so results for Microsoft are not comparable to the other results.
Hrmm... that casts a different light on things, IMHO.

One thing I did not see, is this card a 2D and 3D card? And if so, what are its 2D capabilities? Having Linux support for Q3 is only going to do me good if I can run it accelerated under X at a decent resolution/refresh rate, or if I use another card for 2D.
I don't know what versions you folks are running, but netscape only ever crashes on me if I have java enabled, and when it does it locks up, and I just have to kill -9 it. I have never had it take down X.
As a few readers have pointed out, these students did commit theft of service, and that is what they will be tried for. Since/. is frequented by SysAdmin types, I would think that you folks would understand this.
My college, UB, has a ResNet jack in every room of every dorm and apartment. But some of us want more than one. If we plug a hub into the wall, it is illegal according to the contract we signed. But if we set up a box doing IP Masq and then put a hub behind it, it is not illegal. (And no one can detect it) It is a fine distinction, but one worth taking note of if you want to stay out of trouble.
It is time people stopped looking at these things like college pranks, and started looking at them like real ToS, just the same as "borrowing" your neighbor's electricity or cable.
Atheist: without a belief in a god and very skeptical of the possibility
Agnostic: without a belief in a god and uncertain as to the possibility
I think these are pretty good definitions. Just figured I would provide something from an organization that has a following of people who consider themselves one of the two terms.
I know exactly how you feel - "Brother Jim" came to my school (The University @ Buffalo) last semester and was slandering frat members, women (virgins and non-virgins), non-christians, etc.
I now consider myself an agnostic, though I was raised an Italian Catholic, and I respect the bible for the values and the ideas it promotes, and I hold dear the values it instilled in me, even if I know longer agree with all the reasons for them. But I was dismayed to see Jim using the Bible in a completely slanderous and incorrect manner. I know he is in a small minority, but it is these people that give Christianity a bad name.
What I meant is that right-wing morons who use "Judeo-Christian" thought to defend capital punishment, stopping abortion, prayer in school, etc. have essentially no support from Jews.
Well, I would have to agree with you here, though I think the phrase is completely valid when used in a theology/philosophy context. I think that you and I would agree that the right-wing uses a lot of things in a way that is self-serving and to the rest of the world just wrong.
Sorry, you are wrong. Judeo-Christian (and you can add Islmic in there) belief system is a valid term becuase all three religions/groups of religions share the same basic system of morals, beliefs in one God with prophets, etc. Note how Christianity builds on the beliefs of Judaism, and Islam builds on Christianity. Take any course that gives a survey of religions, and this will be explained to you.
Yes, I completely agree. If EA ported NFS Hot Pursuit, they would have my $50 the day it was released. And motivate me to compile joystick support into the kernel...
I too would have to say that for some reason, Carmagedon gives you an urge to think about such things, while games such as Quake don't. Perhaps it has more to do with killing helpless pedestrians, though. You also hit other cars, drive on lawns, fly off hills, etc. How many of us after watching the Dukes Of Hazard wished we were old enough to drive so we could drive like Bo and Luke? My point is, driving cars is something laced with rules, and somehting that we do all the time (for the most part) following these rules. The thought of breaking these rules and doing fun things with our cars is a very attractive idea. I don't think this applies to Quake and FPS, becuase in real life we don't normally go around shooting guns at targets in such a setting that it would be easy to vear from the rules and shoot pedestrians. We also don't have tons of other people with guns trying to shoot us. Carmegedon brushes with our everyday reality, as do games like Need For Speed. Quake and Doom just don't brush with reality the same way.

Its a must listen for any Darwinist: MC Hawking
The review basically says that while the movie itself is great, the DVD version does not do it justice.
Problems cited include 2.0 stereo, non-anamorphic transfer, and the fact that the "Making" book is a lot better than the extras the disc has to offer.

Finally... we know what the Zero Wing creators when they translated that infamous intro!
The author of this should post it to segfault.net -- unless that's where he found it. ;)

Next time, do a little research first.
The one ingedient everyone seems to miss is fresh ground black pepper.
I actually prefer my Marys virgin, since I often drink them when DD. Tastier then soda, and no one realizes you're not drinking along.
On the subject of Virgin Marys, if you like V8, a little pepper, Woust. Sauce, and Tabasco really livens it up.

Hrmm... that casts a different light on things, IMHO.In Kings Quest 2, the one where you had to open the three doors, while working on the second door you took a flying carpet up to a cliff.
On this cliff was a little rock with a nook in it. Looking into the nook revealed a musical animated add for Space Quest.
