Support for VAX & toaster ovens. Also, lack of new code. Protip: New code = opportunity for instability / exploits. Linux is great for bleeding edge, but I run BSD on my NAS & Routers because stability is more important there.
Patents must not prevent people from thinking about them. When the first sentient machine intelligence is granted human rights, all software patents will be invalid.
This is why we must either completely abolish software patents, or start preparing for the machine wars.
Customer: We have the following requirements for this project.
Me: Oh, looks like I can cut your cost a bit if I use some open source software to save me some time. You would get the work done, but the source code would then become open source for everyone to use.
Me: Oh, I'm charging my normal rate, not having to write the functionality of the avaliable existing FLOSS software actually saves me that much time.
Customer: What about the licensing I heard about?
Me: Well, as long as you're just using the software not redistributing it to end users or other companies you don't have to do anything, I'll just post the code on my public repository, and submit it to the project. I do this frequently, but check with your legal dept. and get back to me.
Customer (eventually): We really just can't justify spending more money with the other contractors when your price is so low and the turn around so quick.
Me: Thanks for funding the development of Open Source Software!
You might like SCI-FI book about this sort of thing: Deus Machine by Pierre Oulette". The premise is, "Super fast AI + BIO engineering... What can possibly go wrong!?"
One cool thing I like is that it was written before the human genome was mapped... And also just around the time the Internet began to take off (1993), so it's a bit dated, but fun to see how folks imagined our current state of things, and where we might go in the near future.
As a code addict, I see nothing wrong with doing what you love +80hrs per week. Last I checked I was at ~108 hours per week of coding, it's what I do for fun & profit and I've been doing it since age 8 -- If people want to pay me for doing it, well that's just awesome. (repeat sentence with subject as: sex/masturbation, shopping, drugs, etc. instead of code until you "get it").
I talked to a girl the other day who works in the mortgage industry managing compliance with government regulations in 50 states... I felt bad for her because her job actually feels like Work, and mine feels like poetry/pool/hide&seek/sculpture... Anything but "work", sure at times it's tedius but I could say the same about HO scale train sets. If you feel as passionate about astronomy as I do about writing code, go for it! Don't let them keep you from "working"!
I was in the store, looking at both brands objectively. The Go-Bot had a rev-up feature that shot real flaming sparks...
Ultimately I had a mixture of mechanical toys. Just because the Go Bot wasn't in the Cartoon didn't mean it wasn't a Transformer [ it just wasn't a Transformer(R) ].
Although, If you didn't have Soundwave, you were NOBODY.
Kaspersky Lab is a company that has its whole business centered around digging through compromised insecure systems. They wouldn't know a secure design if it bit them in their faces.
Man, I've still got this head-ache...
Well, damn, man. Don't you think you should see about getting that bear trap removed from your head. What bear trap?!
I've made several OSs -- It's not that hard. Protected Mode should have been the end of it, but you see, even hardware has bugs. Perfect software can be vulnerable on different hardware. Just look at any BIOS interrupt listing -- some BIOS interrupts are known to trash certain registers in an undocumented way. If our hardware doesn't always perform per spec then you're barking up the wrong fucking tree when it comes to security... Software is only part of the problem.
Eventually a whisker shorts between two things that shouldn't be shorted, conducts sufficient current for a sufficient amount of time, and poof, your drive is dead.
The same can be said for Sex Drives. Eventually you learn not to mind the women whiskers -- It's like they choose not to see them! It's not like you can shave a lady in her sleep!
Why not just quit going to school? Net result will be the same.
Actually, the net result for me was much better than my peers who wasted time staying in school. I was trying to learn Trig AND Calculus at age 12, but no one wanted to teach me. So, I simply NEVER did my "home work" and instead studied what I wanted to (including computer science and programming). At the first legal opportunity I dropped out of school and started a Software business. By the time my friends had graduated I HAD A HOUSE PAID FOR. By the time they graduated college with all that debt I WAS THREE YEARS FROM RETIRING. Unfortunately some other things happened which kept me from retiring, but I've never looked down my nose at anyone who says that school is shit. I know that it's possible to learn more & faster without it.
Seriously, what's the point of practicing with "home work" if you already know the info, and always get an A+ on the Test? Is it to train you to be a good little automaton? Seriously, SCREW THAT! The foundation of Teaching is that everyone learns at different rates -- I have no respect for folks who ignore this... including nearly ALL college and school systems.
..I laud this public school's initiative to make sure that they are tracking attendance.
I can only think back to my child hood, where we sometimes skipped school and still turned out pretty damn swell. Todays kids?! I encountered a 12 year old child who thought that females had penises just like he did... Even the damn 5 year olds in 3rd world countries know that girls have vaginae and boys have penises -- They even know the finality of death because they help kill and/or cook their food.
Fuck you and your oppressive views of life. School kids are PEOPLE too.
Somehow I think the students have turned in the product and are no longer the consumer in this case.
Oh, that's bloody insightful. Maybe one day, you'll realize that the government is farming you for your taxes... That's why it's hard to move to another country not beholden to the former; And why you don't get to pick your nationality when you turn 18 -- You're born into the tax slavery. Consumers!? Hell no, TeamSPAM, Try thinking in terms of Cattle!
Because the stocks are no longer about the actual worth of the company. Shorting doesn't change anything for the better, it's not more accurate, it's fucking gambling you fool. Go bet on horses, that's where your shorting game is best played.
I want a way to remove memories from my brain.
That way, I can see a movie over and over again and still enjoy watching it.
Alzheimer's disease. What good is watching a movie Mr. Anderson, if you can't remember wh-- wait, what were we talking about? Why is the floor so sticky?
The state of the art at the moment seems to be this device if you're interested on the subject.
Yes, but there are other models that don't make you look like a retard. They even work with your smart phone. I use the 920AR (Altered Reality) version, it has two dorky looking cameras on the front and the screens aren't as large, but it's lightweight and looks nicer than huge honking device.
Considering that I've been using something like "Google Glasses" for years, I figured they'd have their crap together and on the market by now...
Not that I disagree that water was the cause; However, all fluid is made of matter and can briefly suspend particles of other more dense matter thus providing the capability to form deposits and layering if said fluid is in motion. The Martian atmosphere is known to have Dust Storms -- I put it to you that these Dust Storms are such suspensions of matter having varied densities, and that the dust is, in fact, relocated. I believe that Mars was not always a solid rock because it shows evidence of volcanism -- Magma is also a fluid / matter suspension and is thus capable of forming layers of material. Unless we observe the actual layers and their material compositions we will not know how the layers formed.
Your theory ignores Evolution and the Fossil Record. However, if you were to say simpler forms of life (or even just matter) spreads from place to place and evolves on the planets, using up resources (and get rid of the predictions of what ultimately happens), then you have something very much like reality...
There is a demand for distributed computing. A general purpose SETI@home w/ internet access. If only the operating systems were secure enough to allow individuals to join such a network and give arbitrary control to strangers they could earn a small profit by selling some amount of their unused bandwidth and CPU power. We could actually monetize all our idle CPUs and unreached bandwidth caps. A more sandboxed solution -- like the aforementioned SETI or Folding@Home, etc -- could be marketed by legitimate businesses. It seems a logical conclusion given our need for always on home (media/status) servers to stream our digital properties to us, and the success of "cloud computing".
Unfortunately the law is also not on our side: What if a client uses your Cloud@Home 'server' to download and redistribute "illegal" material? (The same as if a bot-net operator directs your machine to do so today.) We need to address the issue of identity (IPaddr != person) if my distributed machine intelligence system is ever to make the Internet self aware... So long as we would pay it enough to solve hard problems it could pay for it's own distributed computing rent.
With the state of computer security being utterly insecure at nearly every juncture, and our unwillingness to fix the legal risk of us meeting the demand for affordable distributed computing, I think it's only natural that such is done illegally. Do you really want the first global sentient machine intelligence to be a rogue bot-net system? That will surely escalate to (cyber) war. I'd much rather have it be a peaceful, profitable and legal entity. Sadly we'll have the lawyers and lawmakers to blame for bringing about the first man vs machine war.
I fail to see the entertainment value in going up in an uncontrollable firecracker to go float around a cramped tin can for a few minutes.
I fail to see the entertainment value in sitting for hours on a worn sofa shoveling salt and sugar into one's mouth for hours... As with the evening Couch ride vs the Rocket ride, it's the view that's important, not the vehicle.
I cant see a a strength to it.

My mistake, it was Kung-Pow, which is equally as impressive, IMO.
