On the "When in Doubt" excersise, I was able to do that with a senior that I provide local support for. It's worked quite well with Win7 (She doesn't have admin rights but does have the admin PW when needed). She's called me a few times when something threw her a curve but overall, the support has been minimal.
In discussions with her, she's asked about a tablet and as I've told her, based on her current usage, she'll be fine with what she has until MS ends support for Win7 in 2020 (7 years). At that time, it'll be worth looking at a replacement.
I'd say that Noscript is far more important then ABP as it'll block the most common vector by itself if you configure it correcly. The first thing is to identify those sites such as YouTube, their bank, and what not where scripts are absolutely mandantory and block everything else by default - Deny All principle. Another element is to use a hosts file and block damn near everything that's not needed. Check out the freebie that's online and edit as needed (I use the full file while allowing Google as needed) as the 2nd line of defense. The nice thing about a comprehensive host file is you can block advertisers and save their bandwidth for things like all those Lolcat vids on Youtube. They'll also thank you as it'll look as though their ISP finally got their act together and gave em some speed because they wont be waiting for that god damn ad-server to send em the fucking ad.
What's my real name? Even I no longer no as it's been so long since I had any reason to use it. Which identity is the real me? I dressed for sucess, I drive the right kind of cars and have a trophy wife wih the requisite 2.3 kids and 1.8 cats plus.973 dog and I'd love to know which is the real me and no, I've not been diagnosed as Schizophrenic but have been as ADHD.
Why doesn't Google simply go the Cable franchise route? It's probably cheaper then any other method and who says they can't get a sweet heart deal from Austin to get the franchise
hell I didn't have to buy a fucking mic to use skype/google-talk/whatever as my god damn webcam includes one. Plug it in to video chat and I've got a live mic. Hell the damn thing is good enough for Dragon Speaking 10 to use it instead of a headset. Makes me wonder why this hasn't happened before (remember the movie Silent Running - Sci-fi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Running) where the droids/bots were taught to play poker (cheated using sounds). That's from 72 and was probably produced in 70 (40+ yrs ago for the fucking concept). Seems that nobody bothers to read anything now days other then fucking comic books.
Shit as a kid, I used to read stuff like the "Hardy Boys", "Nancy Drew", Remember "Tom Swift?" along with F&SF/Galaxy/Analog and a whole rash of exotic fiction. Now get off my fucking lawn
I'd agree that 150k music files are a bit egregarious but when I just checked the numbers for my current collection, I've got a bit over 13k files along with 70+GB and that's just on my computer. If I total up my entire collection of CD's and had the space, I'd easily hit 150K files (been collecting CD's for the last 3 decades) the main issue with even a modest collection like mine is the shear number of duplicates you end up with and foobar2k deals with them easily. In my case, I have them hidden instead of deleted as space is fairly cheap and my entire collection is on a dedicated 2TB external.
Yep. Those Nvidia drivers are really nice since they caused a Low Profile GT210 to overheat, forcing a replacement by them under warranty. Sure I'll continue using the replacement where it is but I've restricted the drivers to the 296 series as this isn't a gaming build so there's no need for all the god damn updates to benefit games.
What I'd like to see both AMD and Nvidia tell the game devs is "Fuck Off" and use the god damn windows DX as you're supposed to and bitch to Microsoft about crap performance from theirDirectX system.
If they both did that and worked on getting power consumption down while keeping the performance - I'd live to see an R9-290X with the same performance that runs strictly off bus power (75w max). It's doable but they need to take the fucking time to refine the chips and get their power demands down far enough to not require an external connector unless runing multiple cards.
Why the fuck are you bitching about "Pulse Audio" is beyond me. Yes it's a Stinking Pile of Shit that only a Klignon could endure. Alsa is stable and works quite well. The problem is the fucking in-fighting that's resulted in Pulse/Jack coming into being instead of folks fixing the limitations of Alsa.
and I've run most of the windows versions (still have copies) from wfw3.11, 95, 98, 98SE, ME, XP, Win7 and have seen BSOD's in all of the 9x/NT based versions. wfw3.11 didn't BSOD when it crashed, it just dropped you back to dos indicating that you never ran 95a/b/c (I have copies of all 3) or 98/98SE/ME where the BSOD was originated. Hell Bill Gates himself had the 95 Roll-out BSOD live on national TV. Great Product Release/Announcement.
Guess nobody bothered to rtfs where it states "Unvervisity Policies". Since the blog is by University Facualty Members, they can and do have the right to tell em to shut it down on the Campus Servers. Sorry folks but the idiots don't own the server - it's their Employers so no, their screwed/blued and tattooed while having to bend over backwards.
The solution would be to host it with a commercial host instead of using the univervisities systems. It also drops it straight into the "Fair Use" rules where they could tell the Lawyers to "foad - Fuck Off and Die" and should the university retaliate, they then have federal "Hostile Work Environment" complaints and such that would finally forced a proper investigation into the admins practices. Of course, with idiots like this supposedly teaching our people how to think, I wouldn't trust them to teach my dog how to obey a leash as all it took was a bit of thought on my part to come of with a viable solution that gives them far more ammunition against the school should they continue.
Not subtle enough. All you really need to do is drop the O2 Concentration by 2-3 percent while allowing CO2 to increase. Astronauts then make mistake that kills everyone aboard while leaving things mostly operational. Optionally add C0 (Carbom Monixide) to the mix and ensure that they die quietly.
Another possibility is to screw up the results of some of the experiments. Who says they're not valuable? Hell what if ET is trying to inject some knowledge in a manner that Humanitie can accept - "Eureka!!" Now I can patent the hell out of shipstones or what ever else you can think of.
there's a reason for the height entry being new each and every time as a change in height either direction can indicate certain problems - a good example is a sudden gainning of 2 inches (5cm) in a very short time frame could indicate a glandular problem. Same with sudden loss of height could be an indication of spinal issues. Simply put, the fields are derived from what is a common Vital Stats Sheet (hard copy) and are god damn standardized by the Medical Profession.
On the UI screen issue, yes that should be addressed - This is where devs really do need to watch how a user works because what "You" think makes sense does not from their work flow perspective and it can make/break the use of your app.
with the price of Copper continuing to rise, who will be able to afford copper based PCB's in the near future? Silver has been consistently in the 5-12 dollar per ounce range and copper demand has reached the point that it's starting to hit the same levels with the expectation that copper will eventually level out at 100 per ounce or 10x the historical price of silver.
Silver also has the interesting property of being a much better conductor then copper along with being even more maleable, thus easier to work with. It's also easy enough to create a nice alloy that retains the conductivity while not having the oxidation issue (bare copper has the same problem).
You could throw away the fucking lead/l-ion batteries and go with a nice Leyden Jar to hold that charge. Talk about super caps and they have existed for a couple of hundred years with the Leyden jar. I've played with one and let me tell you, depending on the size, they can hold some serious voltages - I've held one with 5M volts stored. Insane. The problem is, getting a controlled release from them and if Germany is willing to spend the money on the R&D, they make as much sense. Hell scale the damn things up and you could use them to stabilize the grid quite nicely.
Don't I know it? I've started planning a modest 1kw Solar array to provide emergency power during daylight if we suffer another extended power outage. Sure it's not a whole lot of power but it's enough to keep a refrigerator/freezer running during the day while charging a small battery bank for night time use. Sure it's not going to power the entire fucking house but if I can at least keep from loosing $1,000 worth of food during the next outage, it'll pay for itself very quickly. The advantage is it's quiet unlike a fucking generator along with far lower maintenence.
flexible, odd shapes that are resin encased. Hell think about scaling the units up. You could print a god damn PCB layers instead of the current etching methods. Less Polution and hazardous chemicals needed.
Other possibilities are as they said, flexible plastics (shit used for most cheap keyboards/game controllers) and don't forget OLED displays. Same technique can be used to print them (already being tested).
why use a browser add-on that only works in one browser when the god damn hosts file works for everything on the system? I mean, just how hard is it to setup a hosts file now? Sure people aren't keeping the online versions updated but instead of bitching, why don't we get back to sharing the damn things and blocking shit that needs blocking?
Right now, I'm not blocking all of google's shit but once I migrate from Gmail (have to download a decade of messages), I'm going to be killing my account with them along with deleting all information they've accumulated (yea like they'll actually honor that). My ISP gives me a couple of GB of space for my email and I can accept some pretty large files if needed (will have to adjust settings). The only problem is the fact that I wont have as effective an anti-spam filter. About the only thing I like about Google now. Fuck em and the cockroach they road in on. I'll take my business elsewhere.
I'm already looking into alternatives to Gmail and all of their other products as they've already dropped support for my browser. I'm even going to dump my Nexus 7 on my brother since it never did allow me to compose emails while off-line. Same thing for docs or even adding a calendar entry (main reason we'd got it - doctor appointments).
Once I wipe my gmail/g+/calendar/docs and groups I'm going to finish blocking Google completely in my hosts file. Don't need em and don't want them wasting my bandwidth.
I've got 16GB and don't bother with a swap file/partition at all so everything is cached in ram anyhow. I/O bound apps don't take any longer to load then before and once loaded, the relevent section tends to remain cached instead of written out to swap anyhow - speeds things up quite nicely.
Normal loads only see a total of 8GB in actual use (4GB active - 4GB Cached) with the remainder of the ram free for what ever.
and folks wonder why I refuse to move off the 3.4 kernel. It's all the bugs. Hey Linus, take the time and do some serious bug fixing with 4.0 before adding any new experimental features. Things like the BTRF/Ext4 corruption bugs or are those now features that are supposed to encourage system backups?

Windows Shadow Copies - predates Time Machine and is available in XP. It's called Restore Previous Versions and is part of System Restore.

kick those Ninja Turtles out of this discussion. They're not related to me.

Seems to be the accepted standard for just about any tests. If it's allowable, then you shouldn't have any problems with your HP48 being accepted.

That's what Young Coders means to me as most Devs I've met are in their 20-30 years unless working on Cobol/Fortran and legacy systems.
Guess I'm getting Old

if you access any server remotely then you're already using this - it's called ECC RAM
