  1. Re:Good scientific journalism is possible... on Is Good Scientific Journalism Possible? · · Score: 1
Agreed. Identify your target audience first and then write to their requirements. The only assumption I would make is to write to a 10th grade reading level. Who,what, when, where, why will do fine for joe blow with almost no science at all.

writing my first manuscript to be submitted to a peer reviewed scientific journal.
I cannot reconcile this statement in the article. Peer reviewed articles stay relevant for decades and it is best to present your data as it is in a logical concise format. Rambling on for entertainment purposes is pointless. Scientists who read peer reviewed articles want to know what you did and how you did it. Not how you feel about it. If you have to make any assumptions to this audience you need to narrow the scope of the paper. Two different worlds.

Do you think the police would even investigate the pickpocket crime the article depicts had it not been on video? Why are they using CCTV? Kind of expensive. How about crapload of folding@home cameras. Imagine a beowulf cluster of them! p.s. in the U.S. you could make a law that requires police to carry cameras instead of tasers. There. Now I've done it.

  5. Mountains and molehills on Retailer Refuses Hardware Repair Due To Linux · · Score: 2, Insightful

ahem, this is a molehill. Let's clarify a few things while we give the benefit of the doubt to the service center, just for a moment. Did you purchase the laptop with this OS on it? Do you expect them to be experts on everything? No, they are experts at supporting what they sold you. Suppose during the course of the repair they decide to replace the display or even the system board. Would you rather they test it or just send it back to you with some screws missing and your HDD formatted. Better to back up the drive yourself, put windows back on and tell them you suspect problems with the drive - which would be true if you just put windows on it. No sense arguing with robots that are trained to do only one thing and only one way. Hope they fix it for you instead of saying you voided the warranty by treating your laptop like a frisbee. The main thing to remember is to play the system. The first tech you talk to is trained to help you as long as you let him, it doesn't cost him anything. If you force him outside his rulebook or comfort zone, the manager gets involved and defends the worker and you are SOL.

Hopefully Xorg can incorporate a generalized default graphics routine so every freakin distribution doesn't re-invent the wheel. I can't count the number of times a noob has returned a live cd to me because "it doesn't work" How would my grandmother know she should have just selected the VESA line?
