What?
Microsoft distributed code they did not have the legal right to distribute. It's very laudable that the company later came into compliance with a license which would give them the legal right to distribute that code, but that belated action does not legally excuse the original violation.
Nobody is threatening the company.
It's interesting to see a company which so violently protects their own code against violation treating their own copyright infringement so frivolously.
What? I'm not entirely sure you understand how copyright law works.
"So, I finally went and did what the RIAA had been demanding for years! I bought some music!"
"No, you bought some music after you realized you were about to be sued for running an illegal FTP server."
"You're being immature and irrational!"
I bet that in a great majority of cases, the hamburger went bad six hours later when it was left out in the sun. It didn't need to be replaced, it just needed some patches cut out of it. Unfortunately, Update has been turned off the whole time..
The conversation was about FF secured w/ flashblock/noscript. I am fairly certain that IE doesn't come with the functionality of those plugins. Does it have addons which are just as good or better?
After the leaked mediasentry emails, we know their subsidiaries tracking pirated use and sending out nastygrams know exactly what's going on. One of them included a flowchart mocking the RIAA; another mentioned taking time to laugh at the idea of college students not pirating anymore.
Comments to the article show that he died more than he killed. It's the type of game where death doesn't mean much, and killing him over and over again would do nothing to drive him off. He just kept trolling.
Sirlin is a great writer, but he could work a bit more on illustrating the difference between catastrophic glitch and overpowered tactics. If you asked him about this situation, he'd probably just say that the game was currently too shallow for fun, engaging play due to this tactic. Being "good" at the game in that state would be similar to the best swimmer in the kiddie pool - kinda pointless.
Where did you get this? Comments on the site said something very different; that there were quite a few people fighting, that this is just one server out of many and this guy was small potatoes who sat around griefing (mostly failing to grief) and aggravating other players.
Most games are pretty broken. If you devote your life to harassing other players, you'll be able to find a way. With good moderation, you get banned if you won't stop.
But this guy didn't do any of that! He started by wasting lots of time learning nothing. While you (or someone off the street) may not know these things, anyone who has worked with these games does. He could have easily discovered them without wasting everyone else's time and attention.
This is an extremely interesting field of research.

However, there are much more intelligent individuals who have discovered far more about it than this man. That blip from Koster doesn't say much, but what he does say actually makes sense. He's also written quite a bit more.
Yeah, but honestly. Wouldn't someone at the marketing department mention the fact it looks identical to parodies of piracy PSAs, and that releasing it just might be counterproductive?
He's not going to be beaten or killed because nobody was ever giving him credible death threats. His "research" consisted of finding the most bothersome way to annoy other players, and doing it over and over. He should've been banned the first day.
Man, your arrogance and entitlement is amazing, even for Slashdot. Did you read any of the comments? The article is manufactured BS. There was plenty of fighting going on; it just didn't involve teleporting other players into drones, because that was dumb, a waste of time, and involved no skill.
He was not "playing the game the way it was meant to be played", or he would've been getting credit for his kills. He was abusing game mechanics for no actual purpose but to annoy the crap out of people. Think of him as a guy who walks into a bar and dumps a bottle of beer on someone's head, then runs away. Repeatedly. Then goes back into the bar and mocks the dude he just dumped beer on.
In real life, he's not going to get death threats, he's going to get beaten up. If he does it hundreds of times, he's eventually going to run into a beating he can't survive.
You can't put everything in the rules. It's very easy to be an annoying retard and bother other people while following all the rules of whatever game you are playing, unless the rules are so subjective as to allow for punishment of any behavior.
Well, yes. At that point there would be little point to spending $80 on a drive and whatever the premium on blu-ray discs is. I have to say that I'm surprised at the level of quality improvement; I've heard so many people saying they couldn't tell the difference.
Yep. My 24" monitor doesn't have HDCP either (or HDMI), so I theoretically shouldn't be able to watch bluray on it. Now, that would be a terrible shame, since it's beautiful for movie-watching while working on my other display. It may be smaller than a 40 or 50" HDTV but I tend to sit far closer, so it wins out due to the superior picture quality.

Big evil corp vs small good guys is a perspective issue and is perfectly compatible with sound business decisions.

Nice one (and frighteningly accurate). Comparing traditional media to an average of blog speed is not exceptionally useful.

Yeah, there's something very off there. Mac usage is, what, 3-5% and present in many demographics unlikely to use Firefox..
How do you easily lockdown IE to a similar extent without sacrificing additional functionality?

Point.

You're a moron ^_^
