I wonder if they'll be significantly cheaper than their propriety-software-running counterparts?
They will probably be the same as Win98/2000 notebooks. Dell's notebooks that come with Linux as an option are the same price. They come with the "full" version of Red Hat with the support, manual, etc. Plus it's pre-installed and configured for the hardware.
Ok, I've listened to 28:32 to 28:40 about fifteen times and I can't understand what cowboy neal is mumbling for the url of the pictures.
I've got the "blockstackers.com/pics/navi" part but the first part I can't understand. At first I thought he said "jesse" that was wrong, then I thought "jessie" that was wrong also, so I listened again and tried "se" then I thought he said "casscity".
Watch, it'll be something totally simple and I'll look like an idiot. I know I know take my thumb out of my ear and put it back up my ass.
when we monitored Napster for 48 hours three weekends ago, we came up with the 1.4 million downloads of Metallica music,
I have no idea how they came up with the 1.4m number but it seems like maybe NetPD had their 500 or so bots or what ever each with a bunch of Metallica songs available and they just tracked when someone went to download from them. Now 1.4m x 2-4mb per song is a *LOT* of bandwidth (at 2mb per song it something like 16mb/sec. for the 48 hour period). So they probably just logged the user, time, etc. then killed the transfer. I'm guessing (if my theory is correct) a typical session would go like:
user: Oh, look. The new Metallica song. I will grab this.
NetPD: user name and time logged, kill transfer, downloads=downloads+1.
user: WTF? Failed download? I'll just try to get the file again.
NetPD: user name and time logged, kill transfer, downloads=downloads+1.
user: goddamn it! I'll try another source. Ahh here's one.
NetPD2: user name and time logged, kill transfer, downloads=downloads+1.
user: WTF?
repeat until user gets bored or finds a non-NetPD server.
Also Metallica only (hmm only) logged 350,000 or so user names (1.4m / 350,000 = 4 tries per user).
Actually, the suits where I work seem more concerned whether or not they'll still be able to play Solitaire. I had a friend who wanted my to install linux for him, then after about a hour of playing with the different card games I had put on it he complained that none of them were like windows solitare and wanted to switch back. So he booted back into win95, started solitare and BSOD'd. andy j.
hmmm, I was disappointed that there was no discussion of the geek pride festival in boston. I guess it fell between shows. (It hadn't happened yet for GIS 24 and it wasn't relevent for GIS 25).
We just put in a AV station at work built around an extra B/W G3 we had. Here are the specs:
348MB RAM
300Mhz G3
6 gig ATA drive (apps, system, finished movies)
9 gig Ultra Wide SCSI (work space)
microMotion DC30 Plus capture card
ATI Rage Orion -> 19' monitor
ATI Rage 128 (standard G3 card) -> 19' monitor (actually this card died this morning and is being replaced with a Nexus model)
Sony S-VHS VCR
Adobe Premire 5.1
It works pretty well for what we've used it for so far (digitizing video tapes for internet use). I've run out of memory during capture using the highest quality setting (640x480 4mb/sec. (?)) at about 2 1/2 minutes, so more memory would be advisiable. And you should probably go for a G4 instead of the G3.

How about writing a "letter to the editor" of your local newspaper? Most of what John Q. (non-techie) Public knows about this is what's being reported on the traditional news formats (newspaper, radio, tv), and that is nasty h/cackers are using DeCSS to pirate DVDs over the internet. Could someone set up a nice sample document explaining just exactly what is going on?

andy j.Double the sales? If people only followed the directions they should repeat until they run out of shampoo. It's an infinate loop!
I'm surprised that Ben & Jerry's hasn't jumped into this seeing as how they're owned by a global mega-corp now.

Probably - "What's a PDA? Who is G N U Linux?" Although I expect he'd ask in Italian. Like this? Che cosa è un PDA? Chi è G N U Linux? andy j.
Anyone up for implementing this new feature/bug/security hole in Vigor for those of us who don't use office? andy j.

Yeah, what the hell is this? I go to take a look at 7:15EST and the Tux entry is gone already. Someone on the web staff is working late/early.
