well, you're closer than the parent post, but you're still not there.
There is NOTHING AT ALL proprietary about the dreamcast's discs. They're not wierd. They're not GIG-discs. They're just 80 min CD's. BAM!
Want proof? check out www.sub-list.com where you can download just about any dreamcast game you want, self booting, and burn the bin or cue file. Saying that adding the ability of reading DC disks to the Xbox would raise cost is like saying adding the capability of the dreamcast to play audio CD's would raise the cost.
Echo the Dolphin. Biggest DC game i've seen, disc useage wise. takes up 79:57 of an 80 min disc. That's it people. they're 80 min CD's. The pirated games work, by, IIRC, making the DC think that they are playing an audio CD for the first coupla grooves, and then kick into the game. The first gen pirates had the Utopia Boot Disc - a disc with 800K on it, pop it in, then it says "Insert fake game" and loads up.
The "GIG DISC" bullshit from sega had 2 purposes - to disuade pirates (oops) and to make it sound like a technicalogical advance, which its not. "GIG" refers to the capacity the disc could hold if it was compressed.
Also importantly, In order to justify it to the consumer, the almighty dollar (pound rubel shekel) comes into this. The entertainment industry is pushing this for financial benifit for them (no copied art) at the cost of the consumer. What's the per-drive cost increase for the consumer, assuming this gets enacted?

Its possible that we may have some younger geeks who don't know the significance of the konomi kode or "JUSTIN BAILEY" etc. -
The Konomi Kode is up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, B, A. It was used primarily on "8bit Nintendo" (a.k.a. real nentendo) games made by konomi, the most popular of which was Contra. Another legendary code was JUSTIN BAILEY (enter the seccond row as "-"'s) for metroid.
Games today take the fun out of such things by using memory cards instead of passwords and so forth. I've found that we've traded off gameplay for graphics
Which brings me to my next point: Games that have given me enjoyment:
Sim City 2000: I have probably spent more time on this game than any other in existance
Final Fantasy 3: This is a close seccond.
Tribes: My current favorite.
Tribes is a good example of regaining what we've lost in games: I'm going to get flamed for this, but QuakeIII is boring. I've played it, and you wont convince me otherwise. The Graphics on Q3 are nothing short of breathtaking, esp on my coppermine 800EB w/ voodoo5 5500. But the game leaves something to be desired. The Graphics in Tribes SUCK hardcore in comparason. But the gameplay is there. You enjoy yourself when you play. It takes 20 minutes to learn to play and months to get good. Damn what a game.
Has anyone bothered to look at the benchmarks realistically? We're talking 60fps out of this card... That's pathetic - Go and pick up MaximumPC's magazine from last month where they reviewed the GeForce 2 Ultra w/ 64MB 230mhz ddr. That card will do 94 frames per seccond on their test system which is an 800 Dell, i believe. And it costs $500.
If you want stellar image quality, go to best buy and pick up the ATI all-in-wonder radeon card - $300. It performs close to the Gforce - upwards of 80fps in qaver benchmark, does DVD playback 2 shades shy of a decoder card, and the image quality is stellar.
These for under $500 - whereas this card looks to cost $600-$800 minimum. Not a good cost-performance ratio. And i have a voodoo3 3000 in my computer now, i've been a fan of the company because of stability and driver support - i've had great luck.... but this is silly.
And WHY THE HELL is it an AGP card? I didn't think AGP could address 2 devices well, let alone the 4 chips that are on this thing. I thought the rumor was that it was going to have to be a PCI card so that it could address the 4 chips. Which wouldn't have mattered, since FSAA doesn't take advantage of sidebanding and other AGP features...
You're not getting an arguement from me here - My ankles hurt from squeezing them so much while i'm getting pounded in the ass at best buy. Its a company that eats up your soul, and i don't think i made that clearer in the first post.
But, i work there for the discount. Anyway, i also agree that A+ is essentially useless, i paid my own way on that one too. However, my point was simply this - people, whether educated or whatnot - see money as the bottom line. Again, why do i work there? cause i'm 19 and i make $11 an hour, as a SALESPERSON. and cause i get car stereo shit dirt cheap.
money talks, bullshit walks. anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves. I see all this stuff about making the employees feel valued at work. Come ON people! I know i'm valued at work - not because someone put me in charge, but because every day i'm there, they pay me $88 and every day i'm there, i sell probably $600 in JUST SERVICE PLANS which are 80% profit, not to mention any actual product. That's why i can dick around and not worry about getting fired, cause i make them money. again money is the bottom line. Other than the money, i'm a useless employee - i'm a walking human resources issue.
I work at Best Buy, a multi billion dollar company, as a tech. I make shit for money, and don't really do any "real" tech work beyond installing ram, but this is Best Buy's solution: They will pay for your A+ test as long as you stay on for a year. Fair deal I say. Another major player that does it is gateway country - You get a computer when you get a job, but if you leave before a year's out, you have to pay the pro-rated balance.
So: My proposed solution is pay for the training, but make the emplyees sign a form that says if they jump ship in less than a year, or 2, or whatever, they have to pay a pro-rated ammount of the training cost, i.e. if the contract is 2 years, the training costs $1,000, and they ditch at 1 year, they owe you $500.
Say the average life of your processor is 10 years. Say then that overclocking cuts your processor's life in half. You still have a chip that will last 5 years. Who has a 5 year old computer? I mean they exist, but we're talking a 486/33 as a top-of-the-line kick-ass computer from 5 years ago. Besides, most people that overclock buy cheap chips so that if they do fry them, they can afford to replace them. Example: The 333 Celeron, the most overclockable chip in the world - I have a friend who is running a dual celery board with 333's at 500 - a gigahertz clock rating at 1/3 the price! These chips are only about $40 bucks. And 500 mhz isn't bad, not even today.
My next chip will be an AMD. As was my last. Overclocking is an interesting side note, but its not my primary reason for buying the proc. Mostly it is because it is cheap. Stability, performance, and overclock-a-bility are a nice side thought, but i'm not too concerned. I like being able to compute 2 complex and 1 simple instructions per clock-cycle, but it is COMPLETELY secondary to price.
That said, since i've got this chip, i might as well overclock it. My AMD 450 is stable at 500 if you pump the voltage to 2.3V instead of 2.2V. It is even more stable at 475/2.3V however this isn't much speed gain.
I'd like to start a thread and have people list Sucsessful overclocking attempts, with Voltages and Jumper settings. If you've gotten it to work, share! I'm sure there are people out there that would love to know the real world results.

I'm passing this on to some people back home Will... a lot of schools are doing this sort of thing on their own too. Example being one high school in DE which has the "Narc List"-- a written list of students who are suspected of dealing and/or using drugs solely on the basis of appearance, dress, and attitude... ie anyone who does not fit the school's image. The school has actually called parents based on this list and told them that their kids were doing drugs... without any concrete evidence. And a lot of parents believe the school over their own kids! The list itself is kept semi-secret... everyone knows about it but no one knows who's on it until they get called into the office or their parents get called. How do I know it isn't just a rumor? My sister was one of the kids whose parents were called.

however...
Just think how long the PSX has been out - If you listen to you geeks in space (!!!!!) you heard the statistic that 3 in 4 homes has a PSX. This thing is huge, and its here to stay...
so... The PS2 will probably be here to stay for a while too (just a hunch) and that being the case, in a while we can expect the initial rush of games to have come and gone, and then game developers will start to push the limits of the machine. This is what has happened - as of now, the PSX games rock! Back in the day, they were... eh... ok... a little better than the SNES, but heck they took so long to load....
All this just to say that Yeah the first games might not use all the capabilities... but wait a little while and you'll start to see games that push the envelope and your jaw will drop.

In my humnle opinion, its better to NOT know that these things exist - we have numerous examples in history to prove we're better off not knowing about them. Example:
How about stardate 4378324.8 when Ben Sisko discovers that there's a stable worm hole in his backyard??? DS9 went from a quiet backspace hang out with a bar and a shapeshifter to all the Cardassians in the universe pouring through the wormhole.
Research it if you want, but if you find G'ul Dukat breathing down your neck don't say i didn't warn you!

I got this back from a very dear friend of mine, who is one of the quietest, smartest, most respected people i know.
response as follows:
the rest is the katz article.
Make no mistake, this is REAL.

It was Computer Science Sage Robert Wilensky who said that. And i think it ended with
"Thanks to the internet, we now know this is true"
but i'm not sure.

Also:
Take the DEATH TEST!
(oh, was that a deep link?)
This is my data
You can expect to die on:
July 15, 2000
at the age of 19 years old.
On that date you will most likely die from:
Cancer (15%)
Contagious Disease (13%)
Heart Attack (11%)
Electrolysis (8%)
Homicide (7%)
Drowning (6%)
Alcoholism (6%)
4834159 people have taken the DeathTest. | Of those, 54% were female and 46% were male. | The average life expectancy of test takers is 67 years. | 10% of test takers have hairy nipples. | 3% have had team sex. | 7% work in the porn business. | And 84995 people claim to have leprosy. |

Well i agree that in order to release the games they might have been rushed...
The waiting's the hard part...
God what a stupid login name - i should get a new one, but it'll be 6 months till I moderate again.
