Yeah - be thankfull you don't live in South Africa - it took 10 weeks to install a simple 64k leased line in our offices - we have no DSL options, or cable options at present. Our Telecommunications Monopoly is holding South Africa back big time - still another 2 years to go before the Monopoly comes to an end. Count yourself lucky you have these kinds of services. Whatever record companies decide on the mp3 debate, it's not going to solve any problems until they can control what people upload and download.

  13. Web Design, Page Rendering & Bloat-ware on Mozilla Status Update · · Score: 2

I really hope page rendering gets improved in mozilla/netscape.

Being a webpage designer, the current version of netscape is a total nightmare to code for. It's pixel positioning is buggy to say the least, it's page rendering is still too slow, and it often crashes (especially in linux)

I only use it to make sure that my webpages display correctly for netscape users in windows and linux, and to browse HOWTO files

What I really hope mozilla turns into, is a functional 'non-bloatware' browser which renders flawlessley, is stable, fully supports CSS, DHTML, XML, PNG and runs faster than IE.

  14. Backups... on On The Subject of Web Hosting · · Score: 1

I think the bottom line is, you get what you pay for - if you don't want to spend cash on various mirror servers, back-up solutions, redundancy solutions etc. then it's just tough luck when your site gets bombed. It all depends on what you're hosting, if it's a 10 page website, with no backend functionality (brochure-ware iow) then you or you web design company should have a copy locally, plus a backup copy, so an expensive solution is not neccessary. If it's a database driven website complete with e-commerce, do a ton of research and spend money - it'll save you in the long run...

  15. Gene Genie on PTO's New DNA Guidelines · · Score: 1

Putting a patent on the human genome is obviously ridiculous, but as someone pointed out, the patenting will most likely occur on genes created/modified as opposed to exisiting genes. The question here should be, do we really want science to create new genes ? We are already capable of creating life (supposedly). Look at the mess we've made with the atom - the first thing that man will do with genetic science (if it's not already being done) is to use it for warfare. In my opinion the patent is a moot point, it would be far better to be discussing the consequences of messing with something we don't fully understand. In the final analysis, however, I guess 12 foot basketball players and pianists with seven fingers on each hand will happen regardless. Mankind is the fool.

Bad Idea, There's little enough privacy in the world today without adding to the problem via a smart card unit hooked up to your PC. Online, I feel safer typing in whatever details I feel like typing - if I want to give bogus information, I can. With a smart-card, how do I really know what information is actually being passed to a website ?
